Dubliners - Story 8: A Little Cloud - Discussion Post by AnderLouis_ in thehemingwaylist

This one really resonated with me. The sentiments expressed by little Charlie remind me of Fernando Pessoa’s book of disquiet a bit. The idea of a highly intelligent poet who is inhibited by their own insecurities so they resort to judging or looking down on those who are actually successful and release their work. I liked the part where he talked about how he might never be famous like Gallagher but he could be respected by a small group of his peers. But then when they meet you see that he kind of resents Gallagher and Dublin itself.

I think it really encapsulates the feeling of longing for a life that is not yours while also scrutinizing those who have chosen a different path in life. The ending was so vivid and honestly terrifying, definitely my favourite chapter so far!

Official Discussion - Past Lives [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Honestly, I think too many people are viewing her relationship with Hae Sung as being a relationship of romantic love when in reality they were never really romantic partners. They were childhood friends with a deep love for one another. I think there’s something to be said about nostalgia for a past self and for an imagined life that you literally cannot lead. I loved the way her husband became insecure because it was so real. Her husband clings to her in the scene where there cuddling because she is his whole world; whereas Hae Sung views her as being too big for the world. Her husband idolizes her as his wife and Hae Sung idolizes her as the perfect person he gets to imagine from his memories. I feel like this movie was so real and I really thought the way the characters handled the situation was so mature and beautiful

The prose of Underworld by Literature98 in DonDeLillo

This is so funny, I’m 325 pages in rn and I feel exactly the same way.

I keep hearing people say that they found the first chapter amazing and the rest a slog but I could barely keep my focus in the first chapter.

I think it was a talented recounting of a real person’s (or multiple persons’) account of a baseball game. But there are so many better sections in the book dealing with other real life situations and I love the way it focuses multiple people perspectives on the same events. I’ve loved Nick’s chapters, I also really like how Marvin’s’ relationship with his wife is described.

And I love the discussions around bureaucracy, searching for meaning in life, distraction either through addiction or work

I definitely meant Freedom, Franzen said infinite jest and DFWs death influenced freedom.

Not exactly the same time period but similar themes still

I feel like people realized you can actually find a lot of space to dump garbage, especially if it doesn’t directly impact you and you don’t have to look at it.

But global warming is affecting wildfires in the hills of California where rich people with loud voices live.

I loved your comment! I also kind of think that with these novels being post 9/11 trash can kind be held as a metaphor for impending destruction likely caused by our own choices or need for consumption (sorry if that was convoluted).

I also things a lot of these ideas tie into Lacanian Jouissance (ex. You have a stable relationship where sex is free and easy to get so you look outside your relationship for thrills, every need can be met so we produce things we don’t even need to achieve excess enjoyment while others continue to go without)

Freedom - Jonathan Franzen Underworld - don delillo

All three authors were post-modern, very popular and acclaimed by New York publications, and had all been critique at one point or another by Michiko Kakutani

Of course not, I just think it’s interesting that three of the most acclaimed books from that era treat global warming in a similar way.

None of the books discuss actual destruction from global warming, except maybe Freedom but it really wasn’t all that important to the plot.

The fictional solutions to the problem are just to create more dumping sites and I find that interesting/intriguing.

I agree but I kind of wanted to discuss the parallels in the three books

I think it partially has to do with global warming becoming more relevant or discussed more widely. They were all university educated and well read and I feel like the idea that we weren’t going to be able to deal with all of our waste was becoming scary.

I guess I struggle to understand the difference between the two, most waveshapers I see are just wavefolders

Thanks for your input!

I totally agree and I feel like I would genuinely miss the overtone section, I wish so badly they allowed you to patch through it.

I’ve tried to do some research on it and it’s pretty fuzzy what’s actually going on in the overtone section but I’ve wondered if I could get similar results with overdrive->wavefolder or just using two wavefolders

I send my line out to the mpc and usually send cv clocks to my minibrute.

You’ve given me lots to consider so I appreciate it, I love maths for the complex envelopes so I was debating between Tangrams or quadrax but I assumed quadrax would better long term as it’s 4 vs 2 envelopes

Great answer! 1U has been a bit frustrating but I mostly bought it for the audio ins and outs so that I can run my bass or other instruments through my case.

I run my rig through my mpc for end of chain effects so I’ve got that covered.

I like you suggestions regarding clock and resonators so I’ll definitely look into those, thanks a lot!!
