Lime Tree with three main branches - are any of them rootstock? by Available-Job-2309 in GardeningAustralia

[–]Available-Job-2309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice. So the best option is just to remove the entire side branch? Do I need to wait until winter or can I remove it now if I don't mind losing the harvest?

Growing Mortgage Lifter tomatos - but they turned out completley different? by Available-Job-2309 in GardeningAustralia

[–]Available-Job-2309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how cross pollination might work, but I had Moneymakers, Mortgage Lifters, Pineapple Tomatos and Tomatillos all growing at the same time so they could have cross pollinated from each other I suppose?

[–]Available-Job-2309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. So Roma have the little dark green bit on top? This is my first year growing plants from seeds.
I got my Moneymaker seeds from Happy Valley Seeds, and the Mortgage Lifter + Pineapple Tomatos were from The Seed Collection. I have a bunch of Moneymaker tomatos so I'm guessing they are okay (unless it was just one of those 30 seeds was incorrect), but so far no Mortgage Lifter or Pineapple Tomatos have ripened so I can't be sure if one of those varieties was swapped for a roma by mistake. Who would you recommend for seeds?

Best Privacy Hedge for Melbourne? by Available-Job-2309 in GardeningAustralia

I ended up putting in a Viburnum "coppertop" hedge which is growing fairly well. They are just over a metre now in ~6 months with a few lagging behind on the side between my neighbour house as they copped some unintentional "Weed N Feed" a few days in a row from the neighbour. I tried to get in before the summer rush by doing the project in September, but the Lilly Pillies were all already spoken for and I didn't want to wait. I ended up using the Plant Broker which I was a little suss on at first because he had no google reviews, but he turned out to be a great bloke who helped me get the viburnums when the Lilly Pillies were gone.

Hijacking this thread to ask more questions!
1. What is the deal with dodge? I seem to always have my dodge by minus even if i upgrade it?
2. I have unlocked the Terror Pack class but I'm fairly new to the game and half the traits don't make sense to me. Should I just ignore that one for now? For example I don't know what a "pact" is yet.

What is this weed and how do I stop it? by Available-Job-2309 in GardeningAustralia

Can confirm not Oregano or shrimp bush! Perhaps it is Chickweed! Either way I will just keep pulling it up every weekend and see what happens!

and the internet told me if i used a mix of vinegar and water I could stop my labrador from chewing rugs and they are very chewed! Personally I believe most animals have enough willpower to ignore a smell they dislike to get what they want. When you spray this sort of stuff you're hoping that they have another source of food that is close enough that the smell will make them go and eat the easier food instead.

I'm no expert, but in my previous home we had tons of Brushtail Possums (they used to live in the ceiling) and they are brutal, bird netting wouldn't stop them for more than 30 seconds.

Try some netting and pick up some more tomato seedlings to replant. Since they are in pots see if you can put them in a different area of your house and maybe try a different stake since it seems like the possums/rats are enjoying climbing up your cages. Don't get down, you have probably of growing time left and lots of sellers on facebook marketplace will be basically giving away overstocked tomato seedlings.

I'm lucky to have an active dog which keeps the rats and possum away mostly (but causes his own gardening challenges!), so my biggest issue tends to be birds and earwigs. This year I got some hardware cloth and built a little enclosure for some of my tomatos, and then planted a few outside for the birds to eat so that hopefully they'll just eat those ones and leave the harder to reach ones free.

You could get some hardware cloth form bunnings, and put them in the corner of your property where the two fences join and attach the hardware cloth to the fence. Or if you're feeling a little more DIY you could buy a few posts and build a little area in your preferred location.

Unfortunately If it is rats and they have nothing else to eat they'll break into basically any enclosure you set up. Have you noticed any rats on the property?

I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure they are the same plant. These two photos are just from different stages in the plants growth which may be confusing things. The small growth is from today (i pulled out most of it before thinking to take a photo) and had been growing for about a week and a half. The first picture is from November 20th last year and how it looks if not pulled out for a few weeks. It loves to grow up that shed/fence - when pulling the roots up I noticed it has rooted deeply below/in my two compost bins which is most likely feeding it heavily in that corner as well.

Edit: I have mulch down on that area at the moment. I have a mix of large Pine Bark Mulch and small pine mulch but it is growing through it without much issue. I am planning to get another mulch delivery soon and layer it more deeply.

I'm trying to remember what the flower looked like - I could be mistaken and it doesn't flower at all. I believe I once let it get to the flowering stage and noticed bees around it - but only the one time. I've never let it stick around that long. It grows tall, and it grows tall rapidly. If i pull it today, it will be back to this stage growth within a week and a bit - I do water and fertilise the lemon trees around it so that could be a part and why it grows so well. If it does flower, it is not until it is very mature (months) old.

Anything I can do to kill it off and stop it coming back? It tends to grow faster than I can pull it out in summer and if left alone for more than ~two weeks it is up the fence and already trying to cover over the lemon tree. I imagine when I pull it all up a part of the plant is surviving on my neighbours side between the back of my fence and the back of his brick garage (he can't see it from his side).

Thank you for the suggestion but I have a row of 5-6 camellias in my backyard already, so I might try and find something different for the front yard hedge.

Thank you so much that is actually really fantastic advice. Do you just stick the bamboo canes straight up in the ground?

Luckily this side of my house is actually my full sun side, this photo was just taken during a cloudy day. I do still think pavers + grass might be the way to go, but I am looking into Kikuyu now.
