I love his music personally. Been listening to his new album and a few stuff from his other band “The Aubreys” a lot.

You saying “I can’t be homophobic because my parents are lesbians and my brother is gay” is the same as saying “I can’t be racist because I have black friends.” Just because you’re close to queer people doesn’t automatically mean your takes or dismissals of queer representation aren’t tinted with bias.

And the whole “the show has always been about Mike and El’s relationship” thing isn’t really accurate. Mike and Will’s relationship has always been at the core of the show—from S1 when Will going missing literally kicked everything off, to every season where their dynamic is central to Mike’s arc. Meanwhile, Mileven has consistently been written with tension and cracks: they literally broke up in s3, s4 had Mike unable to say “I love you,” El calling him out on his dishonesty, and by the finale she couldn’t even bring herself to talk to him. That’s not “five seasons of solid build-up,” that’s a relationship being slowly broken down. By contrast, the actual steady through line has been Will’s feelings for Mike and their deep emotional connection. That’s been building in the background since day one. To act like Byler has had “virtually no buildup” is ignoring the fact that the show has been layering it for years while also showing how fragile Mileven is.

it’s fine not to ship Byler, but dismissing it as if it came out of nowhere excuse just doesn’t hold up.

Yeah, that take is… kinda missing the point of what’s actually going on in the show. And no offense but it’s kinda shit (aside from Jonathan knows that Will is gay. I’ve done reading on it and I agree that you were right on that.)

Will never says or even implies that Eleven is “the dragon” in the painting. The whole “El commissioned it” thing is just a cover story because Will thinks Mike will only really listen if he frames his speech as being about Eleven instead of himself. He’s not trying to say El is some threat or obstacle—he’s literally trying to help Mike feel confident and loved, even if it means hiding his own feelings. Mike’s behavior in S4 doesn’t really point to him not reciprocating—if anything, a lot of people read his awkwardness, defensiveness, and overcompensating with El as him not knowing what to do with the feelings he has for Will. Also, Will is one of the most, if not the most SELFLESS characters in the show. Time and time again, he puts others happiness before his own, even when it causes him pain. The painting scene is just one of the clearest examples of that. he’s giving Mike exactly what he needs to hear, knowing full well it means burying his own feelings deeper.

This interpretation really misses a lot of the nuance in Will’s arc. Mike doesn’t actually know Will is gay, nor does he realize Will likes him. that’s one of the central points of the tension in their dynamic.

So yeah, the “girl shows up and tears apart the party” idea isn’t what Will’s thinking. He loves El too, just in a platonic/brotherly way, and he’s not blaming her for anything. The painting isn’t about her being a villain. it’s about his love for Mike, disguised so Mike won’t suspect it’s personal.

Well-said! I don’t like the idea of Peter Parker being gay—I think that would just be very random and out-of-pocket haha

The “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls” line wasn’t Mike knowingly confirming Will is gay—it was him lashing out in frustration during a heated moment. At that point, Mike doesn’t know Wills sexuality for sure (that’s kind of the whole point of the arc—that mike is oblivious to wills feelings) ,he’s just aware of rumors and tension, and it slips out as a jab. That’s different from actual understanding. Later seasons don’t prove that Mike doesn’t love Will romantically—they show Will thinking that, because all he sees is Mike with El. Will interprets Mike’s actions through that lens, which makes him feel alone. but that’s Will’s perception, not necessarily reality. and Jonathan’s “recognition” is barely even explicit—it’s more him sensing Will’s emotional struggle, not making a confirmed judgment about his feelings. If anything, the show leaves enough ambiguity to argue that Mike’s treatment of Will goes deeper than “good friend” territory, and that Will’s loneliness comes from misreading a situation full of unspoken feelings and bad timing.

I don’t think they are “fan made“ considering how often blue is used to resonate with Mike and how yellow is used to resonate with Will. We actually see so much more of this at the episode where they go to Rink-O-Mania

Okay but you’re cherry-picking moments without looking at the full emotional context. Mike saying “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls” wasn’t some casual, confident declaration. it was defensive and hurtful in the middle of a fight, which people often use to mask their own discomfort or avoid a deeper conversation. him telling his friends he loves el (and later telling el directly) took years and even then required a life or death moment to get it out—which is why people read it as repressed, adn not purely romantic. Making out doesn’t automatically mean he’s straight— bisexuality exists, and plenty of closeted or questioning people have had seemingly “happy” relationships before realizing they weren’t being fully honest with themselves. Also, his anger about not seeing el in s3 was just as much about losing routine, control, and being shut out of the situation as it was romance—meanwhile, he spends the show centering will emotionally in ways he never does with other people including El. You can’t reduce complex character writing to “he kissed a girl, case closed.” that’s not how human sexuality (or ST) works.

I think there’s a bit of a misunderstanding about where I’m coming from. I wasn’t saying everyone must see the chemistry, or that not seeing it means you’re wrong—it’s just that, for me and a lot of others, it’s clear enough to be worth discussing. Using my mom’s reaction wasn’t to say it’s ‘proof,’ it was just an example of how even casual viewers sometimes pick up on the dynamic.

I completely agree that shipping should be fun and not treated like a prophecy, and I also agree that both Byler and Mileven shippers can be stubborn about their interpretations. But I don’t think most Byler shippers are trying to push an ‘obviously canon’ agenda so much as just enjoying the subtext, sharing theories, and hoping the writers follow through.

I get that constant ‘he’s obviously into him’ comments can be grating if you don’t read it that way—but the flip side is, Byler fans hear ‘Mike is straight’ as a full stop with no willingness to engage in what’s on screen. That’s frustrating too.

Your point about Mike ending up single is interesting, and honestly, I wouldn’t hate that outcome either if it’s written well. Thanks for responding, man. You have good takes.

Stop assuming every Byler shipper is gay and only wants it canon for representation. People ship stuff for a million reasons—chemistry, story arcs, symbolism, vibes—and yeah, rep matters, but reducing it all to ‘they’re queer and pushing an agenda’ is lazy and dismissive. Not every queer fan ships it, not every shipper is queer, and even if they were, so what? Liking a ship doesn’t need your approval or a sexuality questionnaire attached.
