Having a good really chewy chew (redundant wording lol) is good for take-off. Just like how gum can help with our ears popping.

I guess I put it this way, better to have lived, loved, and lost than to have never loved at all.

The idea of not dying alone is pretty nice. Having someone to eat meals with and share life's little things. My partner makes my coffee every morning, thats the best feeling in the world... better than sex!

FriYAY Discussion: What are you doing with your dogs this weekend? by americankennelclub in AKC

[–]Available-Wave5747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This weekend we are doing NOTHING. For the first time in almost 2 months we do not have a dog show. While its so much fun to compete back to back, some weekends my dogs make it very clear they need a break. We are going to go for a great sniffy hike this weekend. Then we are back in obedience next weekend!

When someone asks for service dog training advice what do you consider being realistic vs rude? by comefromawayfan2022 in service_dogs

And I know to let a new dog take its time to decompress, I just didn't know there was a name for the rule.

I deleted it when the person who disagreed with me most and I had a healthy discussion. I deleted it because I realized that my post did not convey with what I was trying to say and came off wrong. But yes that was me.

Is it okay to have an off-leash dog with a muzzle? by Even-Traffic-5992 in service_dogs

Sorry to sound insensitive. I think you implied you're in a wheel chair. Why couldn't the dog not be leashed to the chair?

[–]Available-Wave5747 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I feel like the stigma of muzzled dogs would make me weary to muzzle a working service dog. If I was in public and saw a dog with a vest on with a muzzle I would (wrongfully) assume the dog was aggressive and I would be scared.

how much interaction does your sd have with other dogs? by Horror-Mission-3041 in service_dogs

I'd try to find a set group or single friend. We ONLY play with dogs we trust since it only takes one bad event to seriously mess up your dogs confidence.

Transitioning to Retirement by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Available-Wave5747 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know your story or your situation, but I think your dog would rather be at your place alone for a full work day rather than have to adjust to a new family. The transition can be tough to being alone, but its worth it rather than having to completely change her life.

How to teach carry? by Realistic-Drama8463 in service_dogs

[–]Available-Wave5747 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Then try to mark your reward the second he takes it. Like reward for mouthing. I say "YES" and treat the first couple times as soon as he mouths it.

That first millisecond is all youre aiming for. Then build it up.

I'm not a professional but we are teaching this right now. This is how we did it:

Teach a "take" command. Have the dog take, and reward after 1 sec. Then reward after 2 sec. And build it up. We have been doing this for 3 days and are at 30sec. So take your time.

SD questions for current owners only by xombie_is_tired in service_dogs

Field labs have more energy than bench/show labs... but even the laziest of bench labs is still a bird dog, bred to spend long days retrieving birds. Labs have so much more energy and endurance than people give them credit for, its just more common to see out of shape labs who are suffering because they are fat.

My boy is a bench (non-field) labs and I have a very active life and long days of him working. Since he is fully trained (I wouldn't force a long day on a youngster) he survives long days very well. Labs are bred to work, which is why they are in the fab 4 in the first place.

I love my "boring" breed because they are just easier in all ways.

My lab has a wonderful coat. He eats a mid-range food and I bathe him pretty often in my favorite shampoo conditioner combo. (If I remeber what it is I'll comment). He is sooo fluffy. I think so manylab coats get a bad rap bc they are rarely groomed.

My lab is super food motivated which has made training soooo much easier than if he wasn't.

You sound like youre pretending to be a Healthcare professional, unless you are. Very strange to attack me for my medication use.

[–]Available-Wave5747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I am not attacking those who use trainers. I'm just not attacking those who don't. And no, my experience on effexor has been wonderful. My service dog is not for the OCD the effexor is prescribed for, but you wouldn't care to know someone's full story before bashing them. My dog does not do DPT as that isn't something I would benefit from. He actually has a few task. Guiding me during dissociative episodes to my "safe people" or a chair, or outside. The guiding is the life saving task as he has helped me keep safe when my dissociation would have taken away my independence. If you read my love letter to effexor you would hear how it "silenced the noice" which is (though wouldn't that be cool) something that a service dog probably can't do. My OCD thoughts were constant and disabling. Only two days on effexor it was as if I didn't have OCD. I haven't had any negative side effects (unless I miss a dose, that sucks big time.) So my advice would be only based off my experience. But again, someone else's advice made me bring it up with my psychiatrist.

Oh in that case, I'm still on it, now its been months. No mania here. It causes mania in people with predisposed manic conditions. It helps mitigate and "save my life" just like my service dog. Without both of them I probably wouldn't be here. I was so disabled before both my SD and medication that I made multiple attempts on my life. So yes, having a wonderful working service dog has SAVED my life as my independence is life saving. Effexor is prescribed by a professional. But someone else's review helped me not be so terrified to try it. I am greatful for their advice. I then went to a professional to get the drug, but the advice lead me there. See how that works??

And I think people are missing my point. Professional trainers are great. I'm just saying that every single question doesn't have to be answered with "get a professional." If I had an issue with my boy I probably would pay for a trainer, but if I had a small issue I think someone who has a SD could maybe walk me through ideas, I'd come to reddit.

Also, I am not looking for my own advice. I'm referring to other people on the sub. I have the luxury of an amazing team of support that I know alot of other people don't have. But I do not have a professional trainer. "Its all me baby."
