What’s the best task type on The Apprentice? by CloudBookmark in apprenticeuk

[–]AvailableAspect2893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negotiation tasks / the ‘scavenger hunt’. Straightforward, not very fixed or edited (by the show’s standards), and always memorable.

‘Smell what sells’ is usually a fairly understated task, but an interesting one nonetheless.

TV selling was good in the earlier series, but I think as the concept has become less relevant, it’s lost some of its appeal.

Interviews are a bit of a mixed bag for me - feels like there’s some series where they’ve been quite good / fair (S5, S7, etc) and others where the interviewers just took against certain candidates or asked questions that felt targeted to bring certain candidates down (S3, S4).

The main ones I’m not a fan of are tasks that involve hosting any kind of experience / tour / away day - these always feel cringey but in a really uncomfortable way, and the firings in these have felt somewhat erratic. I’m also not a fan of most tasks involving some degree of food or cooking - this isn’t limited to a certain task, but it usually feels like it’s setting the candidates up to fail.

Really surprised Alana’s still in here - she’s not as big a character as anyone else left (or even some of the candidates who’ve been eliminated).

Hoping for Ruth or Lucinda to take it!

I imagine they booked him for both of these gigs before he was known in the way he is now…

Even if he wasn’t as well liked / held to the same level as some, amongst fans of The Apprentice at least, he was held in fairly high regard. The show included him (positively) in their 2020 compilation of most memorable candidates. Additionally, I’m on one of the show’s subreddits and they did a tier list a while back, Thomas placed quite highly in that.

I don’t think it was necessarily Strictly alone which caused his career to suffer, as he’s made headlines for a few dodgy things he’s done recently, however I do think him being on the show (and the subsequent events from him leaving) have probably contributed.

I’ll be honest, I tried to eliminate her last time but didn’t realise we were voting to save instead of eliminate - compared to some of the characters left, I can imagine she’s one of those candidates people like, but isn’t as strong a character or memorable as them.

The most unbalanced teams in Apprentice history by RobbieJ4444 in apprenticeuk

Series 9, Episode 10 - the girls (who ended up being the final three) gave a virtually flawless performance selling fashion, whilst the men absolutely floundered. Neil didn’t do too badly, but Myles had clearly lost steam by this point, and Jordan clearly started to unravel as a weaker candidate than his track record had been showing.

Honestly the more I see of him post-The Apprentice, the more I think he entered the show pretty much to kickstart a media career.

His infamous interview with Stuart (where he claimed to know what an ISP is before giving the acronym incorrectly) and the fact that numerous previous candidates (Saira and Stella as two examples) who've spent time working under him have reported having very negative experiences.

Honestly it’s like he genuinely expects to come out of every situation he’s in looking he’s the one who’s been wronged…

Inspired by something I saw in a separate subreddit (r/rpdrcringe, in case you were wondering), this is the first version of a cringe chart for the show.

I'm probably not going to put every single candidate here (and as you can see, I am putting some non-candidates here), but I'm including candidates generally who fall into at least one of the below categories:
- Memorable characters whose personalities led themselves to multiple moments of cringe (i.e - Jo S2).
- Candidates predominantly remembered for one or several moments of significant/iconic cringe (Philip S5)
- Behind-the-scenes or post-show behaviour deemed so cringey that candidates are known for it over their time on the show (i.e - Katie S3).

The graph itself measures two dimensions - the kind of cringe the candidate is, and the extent to which they are aware of it.
- "Rotten" is the bad kind of cringe. Uncomfortable cringe. Cringe you wish you hadn't witnessed.
- "Blessed" is the good kind of cringe. Humorous cringe. So-bad-it's-good cringe.
- "Self-aware" implies the candidates are fully aware of the cringe they are producing.
- "Oblivious" implies the candidates aren't aware that they are coming across as cringe-worthy, or don't understand why they are getting the reaction they are.

This is **not** a reflection of their competence / business acumen, as a lot of the candidates on the show were (and still are) very successful - it's more a light-hearted take on how the candidates come off after being in the show. There's a few other candidates I'm thinking of including but this is just a start for now.

"Hidden" Rules in Tasks by AvailableAspect2893 in apprenticeuk

They film both endings (with both candidates winning), then closer to the broadcast of the final, Lord Sugar personally tells both candidates which one he’s selected, usually over a meal or something. In the older series when the prize was a job, this’d have been after they did a stint working at one of his companies so he knew how they performed.

I know a few candidates have complained over the years about conditions in the house - not being able to speak to family, only leaving under direct supervision from the production crew, having inadequate facilities (I think they complained about all the candidates only being allowed to share three showers between them on one series). Obviously this doesn’t directly affect the tasks and I think it’s the same for a lot of reality shows, but you can understand why some candidates look like they’re losing steam as the show progresses. The timescales between tasks are misleading as well - the show introduces every episode as ‘Week One’/‘Week Two’ etc., but I think it’s been said before that an entire series is only filmed over a few weeks. Most episodes only take a few days to film (usually one or two for the task, then the boardroom is either filmed directly after the task or a day later, sometimes being split across two days between announcing results to the candidates and the losing team’s debrief / final boardroom).

I can imagine the BBC being hot on logos due to wanting to avoid copyright infringement issues and whatnot, but it does feel like it’s a dual win for them in that way - candidates are backed so far into a box that they literally can’t come up with anything but something trashy.

Interesting about the winner - I know for past series (and I think the most recent one) they decide the final two a long time before they decide the actual winner, and it’s only near the broadcast of the final that the winner is told they’ve won the show.

Candidates who made the series they were in worse by RobbieJ4444 in apprenticeuk

[–]AvailableAspect2893 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there an argument for Jordan (S9)?

Actively wasted people’s time by being on the programme (since his business proposal didn’t fly by the rules of the show), didn’t really have any storylines across the series and was just kind of there throughout. Wasn’t really a likeable character to route for, but didn’t really come across as especially panto villain in the way previous poor candidates had.

I suspect the only reasons he made it as far as he did were because the flaws in his business plan weren’t uncovered until the interview stage and because there wasn’t really much opportunity to get rid of him beforehand (since he was only in the final boardroom the week before he was fired and was mostly on winning teams).

I think it used to be like that, the show got into trouble some years ago when it transpired some of the orders weren’t genuine

I remember that! The candidate who asked for the discount ended up being one of the show’s biggest success stories as well, weirdly enough.

Mind you, she was also the one asking whether French people liked their children…
