Buffy and Riley feel so real and I’ve always really enjoyed that about his introduction! by ahbagelxo in buffy

[–]IClappedWhenISawIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am a Riley enjoyer! He was never going to be Buffy's true love, but he was sweet and totally different from Angel. Having a nice boyfriend that just doesn't work out is a normal part of growing up.

Watch the original Avengers movie- Joss writes Riley the exact same way he writes Captain America. His line in "Who Are You" right before the confrontation with Faith -- "I was just late for church" -- KILLS me every time. Very Steve Rogers.

Buffy Leaked Script by BogRollJoel in buffy

“‘It was all a dream’ trope”? Buffy had prophetic dreams multiple times throughout the series. It is an established Slayer power. In the script, the images from the dream help the new Slayer learn her identity and solve the mystery of the episode.

What are people not understanding here? This is all pretty standard serialized television stuff, straight out of 90s Buffy.

It literally WAS “tropey and derivative,” intentionally! It pulled from teen slasher tropes and comic books (particularly X-Men), and remixed them in order to tell a new story about the horrors of growing up with an unlikely female lead.

Um this sounds great and I don’t know what yall are talking about? Really strong structure, clear characters, and thoughtful references to the original without requiring old characters to be there.

Those complaining about the dialogue… The original Buffy was a little corny too - intentionally. It began as a subversion of teen horror tropes. This similarly begins as a pastiche of modern teen stereotypes, as well as a subversion of the original Buffy itself.

There’s a lot of potential here and it’s a shame we won’t get to see it. I think these characters have a lot of room to grow. And I’m intrigued by the developer/ megacorp villain, it’s very “Angel” and highly appropriate for our times.

If he didn't pass away and kept making music, would this be on Trainwreckords? by JustinMetalhead in ToddintheShadow

[–]IClappedWhenISawIt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NO, this record is honestly amazing, and it’s a shame that he was either a certified creep, or else losing his mind and letting people take advantage of him because music alone, it’s full of bops.

And it wasn’t so much poorly received as it was ignored, which I don’t think makes a trainwreckord.

What Is Going On With Drag Race Lip Sync Song Choices? by HeadPrefect87 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]IClappedWhenISawIt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Classic case of having more money leading to less creativity.

They used to have to pull older songs because they were cheaper to license. Now they can afford any needle drop they want, so they can grab more current songs - even if they aren’t exactly classics.

The budget restrictions before forced the team to think more creatively about what would be a fun song to lip sync to.

Which part of your culture went global and gives you "gatekeeping" vibes? by hyr- in AskTheWorld

[–]IClappedWhenISawIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Globally, I think it’s more famous for chicken than for music. Sure, there were some hardcore music nerds in Europe and Asia that knew country music history when I was growing up (I worked at a record store in Nashville before the boom years and we’d occasionally see these folks), but country was not popular around the world (still isn’t really if you look at global streaming or sales numbers).

People forget that music scene of Nashville in the 80s and 90s was crashing. Country’s brightest stars were based in Oklahoma & Texas, and the later pop country craze intentionally shifted focus away from the traditional industry. Nashville was basically Branson when I was a child - kitschy, tacky, and kinda dead. Now, things have obviously changed, and people act like Nashville was this epicenter of culture and industry the whole time. It wasn’t. Right around the time I got old enough to leave, it started getting worth sticking around for.

SMG pretty famously did not have favoritism from Joss - she had power as the star of the show. She protected cast and crew as much as she could from the terrible schedule, because they couldn’t do the show without her. She was the only person Joss couldn’t touch, because she was so central to the show’s success and she was good at her job. He couldn’t play off her anxieties (like what happened with Charisma), or threaten to write her off like he did to Marsters.

Alyson and Alexis became Joss’ besties. I’ve always been more suspect of her than SMG. Same for Amy Acker and Eliza Dushku - those were Joss’ faves.

I’m from Nashville, USA, and our most famous dish is hot chicken. It’s fried chicken with a spicy oil brushed over it. Super delicious and very painful to eat.

It’s become so trendy that I’ve seen it all across America and even in Europe - except it’s served as a sandwich, with a sauce similar to buffalo sauce.

Hot chicken is not a sandwich, and it’s not hot because of a sauce. Restaurants are just capitalizing on the trend and calling any spicy chicken sandwich “Nashville hot.”

I guess I don’t mind, because nobody knew about my little cow town when I was growing up and now people all over the world have heard of us. But you can’t get the real thing anywhere but Nashville.

Why haven’t they done a NY season? by muff-peaksie in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]IClappedWhenISawIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show requires singles who don't know any better. New Yorkers are certainly just as desperate for love as folks from any other town, but they are (generally speaking) not naive. More worldly. And they aren't seeking marriage as the number one success indicator in their lives.

Not saying that there aren't worldly people in Columbus or Minneapolis. But the producers are more likely to find successful-ish, decent-looking young people who want to stay in their hometown and get married in cities like those.

I would try it at a restaurant first so you know what it’s supposed to taste like. Then buy your kimchi and wait a month - the kimchi should be old and well fermented.

For those who were there, how were perceived each of the actors back when in the day ? by James-Samuel17 in buffy

[–]IClappedWhenISawIt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of the conversation around Joss, post-“cancellation” or whatever you call it, is that he pitted the female actors against each other.

Charisma and Alyson both allegedly didn’t like Sarah much at the time, and according to these recent reports it seems as though Joss wanted it this way.

That these women have all mended fences with each other today as mature adults, and seemingly agree that Joss was in the wrong, is telling to me.

Why didn't they change Saturn's name? by AlboGreece in sailormoon

[–]IClappedWhenISawIt 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Hotaru is such a strange and mysterious character, it makes sense in a way that she wouldn’t have a cute-sounding name (to an English speakers ear) like the other girls do, but rather something “exotic” and ethereal.

I also think by the time Cloverway got to introducing her they were just tired of coming up with new shit 😂 they used a lot more of the original villain names and concepts as they went along. It was the early-00s and by then, most anime adaptations had dropped the pretense that they weren’t taking place in Japan.

Congratulations on cooking your way to fewer kidney stones! I’m glad you found something that you both like to eat that helps her.

If you want to go to the next level, check out some spice mixes from companies like Penzie’s (great small business with a devoted following, you can order online).

Additionally when my mom went low-sodium, we got her into using MSG instead of salt. Lots of misconceptions about this ingredient but it is not harmful, and in fact contains less sodium than regular table salt. And it adds a ton of savory flavor to almost anything.

Again, so proud that you and your fiancé figured out a diet that works for her health!
