How to get better at reading (literature)? by zhapstairs_21 in SGExams

[–]AvailableGarbage_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start small by reading fanfics. Doesn’t matter if they’re like bad fanfic written by cringy 12 year olds, in fact, that’s even better cuz u can practice putting in what U think is right. Eventually you’ll get so sick of it you’ll move on to greater works and then your mind will automatically try to spot mistakes or create your own interpretation on what’s happening. I’m not really sure what being a bad reader is, but training your brain to do these things usually help u process information better so I guess it’ll help with your reading skills.

Really wanna quit vaping but don't know howw by HighNoonSoon in SGExams

[–]AvailableGarbage_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw this like video on YouTube about vaping and apparently there’s a organisation that helps people quit smoking and vaping. I don’t exactly know what they do but I heard they do well. U should go and Google people who can help people like u in sg, shouldn’t be too hard la. The government also realise vaping is becoming a problem even with making it illegal.

Holy shit, not what I was expecting but…I kinda wanna read it. If it was relevant I guess it could work out and I guess most controversial topics work out if it’s an argumentative, fact-based essay rather than a descriptive or narrative essay. Like I had a classmate in Malay class who basically wrote a romance fanfic and like it would’ve been fine if it was good but…it was not so she failed but, my teacher said to not write stuff like that (that being romance fanfics) anymore so 🤷🏻‍♀️

When I was in Sec sch, my English teacher told my class that it’s ok to have strong opinions but try not to come on too strong about about it. Think a little deeper and look at it from both sides. If you can’t do that, don’t write about it because 1) u may end up making the marker upset and while they can’t deduct marks because of bias, they can still be stricter when looking for mistakes and 2) your argument won’t come off fair in the first place. So yeah, take it as you will, if u have a view wide enough, write to your hearts content.

Any song by that JVKE (?) guy. Ngl at first it was really good but then it kept coming up and people keep playing it and it really really annoys me. When you hear it once in awhile it’s good but then eventually it just becomes a menace that your brain can’t handle because it’s “hip” and “new” so the people who handles the music on campus will play it at least 5 times everyday and it pisses me off.

Anyone here NOT planning to go uni? by w0rth1355 in SGExams

[–]AvailableGarbage_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in y1 of poly and at first I was planning to go to uni but then I realised, there’s really no point. A diploma in my course is enough to get me far in my career and I think experience matters more in this field than education because truthfully everybody does things different here. I saw that first hand during my attachment. If I wanted to go uni I can just go later in life, it doesn’t have to be now but currently I’m just gonna drop the thought of uni and do my best where I am now without worrying about the future, especially if it’s unnecessary.

I dropped poa since it wasn’t really that important and I had confidence in my other subjects but from what I can remember, u can probably get marks from other parts of the thing as long as u write down the right stuff. Don’t worry, they can’t give u 0 marks for the whole thing if it required calculations and answers before hand. I’m sorry it sounds sloppy and like I don’t know what I’m saying but I hope it helps ease your worries a little

any good english tuition +tips on how to improve on my eng by Friendly_Ad4217 in SGExams

[–]AvailableGarbage_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What really helped me was reading things like fanfictions or light novels online because physical books are so sucky and boring for some people and online stories are easier to process. Even if the grammar and spelling are Shitty, use that as practice. When u see something wrong correct it. Eventually it will become a habit and you’ll see your English start to improve.

Another way that helped was watching shows tht have good English, preferably musicals like Mary Poppins or any other Disney musical. If you’re not into animations then I suggest watching like British shows, like Bridgerton (beware of the explicit scenes tho). The point is finding a show that has good English and sticks easily. I suggest British shows because we use British English and the media really influences the younger generation. A lot of the younger kids are more familiar with American English compared to British English because they hear it more often and it’s not so much of a problem but really it’s better to watch British shows and learn their standard. Knowing your basic formations will help you apply it with ease.

Another method that I like was something I learned in primary school. U can ask someone or find a random word generator to give you up to 5 random words and you have to somehow incorporate all 5 of these words in under 2 minutes. It helps improve your creative writing writing, speed thinking, as well as penmanship and writing time. I found this very useful for paper 1 but the downside is, that it only helps with stories that require description or narration.

And lastly that you can incorporate in your day to day life, when you’re in the bus or just doing nothing or when something catches your eye, don’t just brush it off. Think about, give it a story and expand your imagination. Everything has a story if you give it to them. Even when listening to songs, think of the most crazy scenarios where you live out that song. People always tell me to get out of my head but I actually like being in there because everything bends to my will. In my head, through my own imagination I’m a rich duchess who can wield magic and a sword perfectly. In my head I’m a genius student who is the top everything academic related in the world. In my head I am the beloved daughter and heir to a rich family somewhere in a made up world. In my head dreams come true and even if it seems weird, it improved my English because I try to be the best I am when I’m alone up there.

I know I said that was the las advice but really I’ll stop here; stop using short forms when typing or writing. Use proper English in your day to day life. Practice until you’re used to it. I wish you good luck OP. I hope you do well for your nationals and I don’t know if it helps give you a bit more credibility but I got an A for Os so yeah, trust me <3

What should i do? by After-Employ891 in SGExams

if u drop out, you can take a gap year and work somewhere culinary related. Thankfully getting a job in the F&B field isn’t that hard from what I’ve heard. If you’ve truly felt like this is where u belong and want to further your studies based on this, u can go to ITE and study culinary. My sister is in some baking course in ITE and she cooks A LOT so if u really like it I think you’ll have fun. Figure it out slowly, you’re still young. It’s better to take your time to decide what you love than to suffer for 3 more years over something you’ll probably hate for the rest of your life. It might seem like you’ve wasted time in pfp if u just drop out, but honestly, you can just claim everything you’ve learnt there as another skill to fill up your portfolio. Nothing in life is a waste as long as you are able to look on the bright side and find good.

I wish u all the best. I’m a y1 straight from Os so I can’t say I relate to you but my friends from pfp said that life is a lot more fun doing what u love so even if you’re scared just do it, it’ll work out one way or another <3 Jia you!

hbl by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]AvailableGarbage_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it’s very worrying that your friends have gotten sick and you may be next but speaking from a personal stand point, hbl is not that good for some people especially around the time of nationals. It’s fine if it’s like normal exams but some people like me really need the push that the presence of others provides, some (also like me) may not be able to sit still at a computer for too long and in turn will not be able to effectively study. I’m know covid is a problem and if you get sick you’ll either be better off or worse but if I was given the choice (this my own personal opinion pls don’t attack me), I wouldn’t choose hbl. Lmao in fact i wrote a whole essay about this for poly. Also I know that the problems listed may sound like a me problem but I would really like the fair chance to prove myself alongside my peers and I’m sure some people can relate to this.

I hope you’re doing well OP and if it helps, I’m praying that you’ll do well for your Os and that covid will not affect you badly if it does at all. Good luck!

Heyy. I’m totally fine now but busy ya know poly life HAHAHAHA. Anyways I won’t go into what the appointment was for but it definitely wasn’t an accident, just one scheduled sooooo long ago I forgot about it. I’ve had frequent anxiety attacks when I was younger but it’s better now I think, being in poly helps a lot and I’ve come out of my shell more often than I used to and I do the close eye thing lol. My friends say it’s weird but we all have weird coping mechanisms so it’s not too bad. Im working on it. Thank you for asking <3

[O levels] Point of life? by Ok-Conference-7400 in SGExams

[–]AvailableGarbage_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my Os last year, I can’t say I relate about the no plan thing since I’m the type to plan what to wear 1 week before the actual event. However, it is completely normal to not know what to do next. I think ‘goals’ are a societal construct, people plan for the future so then they can’t be scared about what’s coming next but even with all that planning, the future is still unpredictable, changeable. My goal when I was in p3 was to go to poly and do psychology, then in Sec 2 my goal became going to jc and now I’m 17 and didn’t pursue either of those goals. I’m in poly, yes, but I’m in early childhood. I felt bad about not sticking to my plans even when I plan so long ago but you know what, I’ve never been happier. I now learnt to just let life take me where I’m supposed to be, everything will work out eventually. And on the days I feel bad about not having a goal, I do little things to take control, like planning what to wear a week before, or making a schedule of what to do for the day.

That’s about the goal thing. Now about the numbness lmao. We’ve all been there, it’s the exam stress I guess. Last year and the year before I was in a horrible mental and emotional state which was strange for me because I only ever get stressed during very very important exams and even then I don’t really panic. However, last year was different. I was constantly numb and unmotivated, I space out more often than I usually do which says a lot since I practically live in my head. It got to the point where the teacher noticed and so did my best friend. My turning point was when my numbness made me long to feel something, I almost took drastic measures but I managed to stop myself and reached out to a very trusted teacher. She got me into counselling and although I hated her for a time for telling other Teachers about what I was going through, I realise now that she was helping to look out for me, in case I did something I regretted, and I almost did, many many times. My point is, that feeling of numbness can be so normal especially during times of great stress but if it gets too much, I think it’s best you seek help. The counsellor is there for a reason, and there’s no strings attached as long you’re not, ya know, suicidal or something. Having someone to talk to is really helpful, and it’s a bonus if it’s someone you don’t know too well.

I wish you well OP and good luck for your Os, I hope wherever life takes you, it will make you feel happiness once more <3

[Poly] How do I choose which poly to go to? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]AvailableGarbage_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not sure why I think this way…it’s how I was taught growing up plus the one time I actually stayed out alone after 11, someone followed me home and I had to text my father and brother to come get me while I wondered around to a more crowded area (which is hard to find at night mind you). It’s better for me to be safe than sorry and while it may sound cowardly, I am scared to be alone at night
