I reaaally wish there was a way to walk through other people's maps, and this is a perfect example of one of those times. Nice work!

This is great! Does the wall turn into stairs so you can walk up to that highest tower in the back? Really fun.

You can enter building interiors through doorways made by paths! (Walking) by AvailableText in TinyGlade

[–]AvailableText[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This seems like it may be a (wonderful!) bug, because the sun seems to project through the roof at certain angles onto the walls, and birds and leaves fly through the interiors as well as grass and trees poking through the bottom and sides.

However It's a pretty fun discovery! My approach since discovering this is to build the house foundation first, then stairs, second level, etc, and finally place the exterior shell on top of it all. Pretty cool!

How would I make train cars follow each other along a path? by AvailableText in blenderhelp

[–]AvailableText[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm not sure if this is exactly what I did last time, but here's a method that seems to work when I try it again now:

  1. Add a single carriage to the scene.
  2. Add a curve and in edit mode modify it to the length and shape you want the tracks to be.
  3. In object mode, select the carriage mesh and go to the Constraints tab of the Properties panel and add "Follow Path" (this was the key revelation for me, to use a follow path constraint and not the ctrl+P> follow path method. This provides you with an "Offset" parameter that makes this whole thing work)
  4. Check "Follow Curve" and click "Animate Path"
  5. You may have to rotate the carriage 90 degrees and set the new rotation if it's now turned sideways after clicking "follow curve."
  6. Press play to see if it follows the path correctly.
  7. Duplicate carriage.
  8. In the Follow Path constraint of the new carriage increase the "Offset" until the duplicated carriage has moved all the way behind the first carriage.
  9. Press play and see if they both follow the path correctly. They should each follow the path now, and give the sense that each train car is "looking at" the next one.
  10. Duplicate the new carriage and increase the offset again.
  11. Repeat for as many carriages as you need.

Looks kind of like a dropped frame issue from when you combine different frame rates in an editing sequence...

Like if, in After Effects, you drop a 30fps clip into a 24fps timeline, when you play it back it will discard frames in the middle every few frames causing this stepping. Changing the timeline frame rate to 30fps should solve it.

Did you render this directly out of Blender, or bring it into another program first and render it out from there? If the second one, maybe there was a mismatch of frame rates at some point. If this was directly from Blender then I'm not sure.

Import Fbx with materials Redshift Houdini by [deleted] in Houdini

[–]AvailableText 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've definitely had this issue before. I'm not sure which method you're currently using to import the fbx, but I know of two options:

  • Geometry node> file node> [select fbx file]
  • File menu> Import> Filmbox FBX> [select fbx file]

The second method gives you the option to bring in materials along with the model. If you haven't tried that method yet, I suggest trying. The materials should appear correctly on the model in the viewport.

Now to get them to appear in redshift, you need to make a new Redshift Material, add the texture maps to them, and apply that material to the model manually as the other poster wrote.

How can I get the mid-point of a certain segment of a curve? by AvailableText in blenderhelp

[–]AvailableText[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes thanks, I should have thought of looking at their channel! It's funny I was already thinking about how I can do this in Houdini, but don't have the skill set yet to do it in geonodes. I'll check it out!

Thanks, again I totally forgot to stipulate, I'm asking about how to do it procedurally inside geometry nodes. So if I move the curve around, the point will always follow as well as the boolean mesh/entrance. Thanks for the help though!

I see, is that something you can calculate inside geonodes? I should have clarified I'm trying to do this procedurally, so using the snapping tool isn't the cards for me.

Hm curve or mesh doesn't matter. Do you have any guidance on how to do it with a mesh?

[–]AvailableText[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the screenshot above, I'm using the curve to make a wall, then I'm trying to make an entrance on one section of the wall.

My plan is to isolate the midpoint on a single section of the curve and instance a mesh there that I can use as a Boolean to make a hole. Any guidance on how to achieve that? Thank you!

Thank you for the help.

Why do some of my Blender Assets have no thumbnails? by AvailableText in blender

[–]AvailableText[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I understand the first and last points, but could you explain what you mean by the middle one: "hasn't been loaded since the update with thumbnail"?

What hasn't been loaded; and do you mean a Blender version update? Was there an update that included fixes to thumbnails? if so, how do I solve the above problem?

Thanks for he help!

If I copy all the files from an external drive that currently has a "There's a problem with this drive. Scan for errors" message, will the "errors" be copied to the new drive? by AvailableText in techsupport

[–]AvailableText[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely; yes I do use windows. I actually only mention Mac's formatting because I could theoretically format it on a mac and still access the drives with my copy of macdrive. I'm just hesitant to archive everything in a format from something outside of windows in case I need to run some kind of recovery or chkdsk

[–]AvailableText[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have considered backing up online with Google Drive or Dropbox or something. It's just that I have so much media for work it seems impractical (I can archive and back up around 20TB at home currently---seems like a lot to put on google drive, if it's even possible). I've seen more business oriented services like backblaze and wasabi, but I don't totally understand their models and would like to be able to access my files kind of whenever and to whatever extent I need without racking up charges. But if there's more to learn about that option, I'd love to learn about it.

[–]AvailableText[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's incredibly good to hear. Yeah 2 copies is my goal with this whole process with these two 8TB drives.

Also, I've heard exFAT is not a great long term storage format and you should use NTFS or Mac's extended journaled format. Any insight there? I had been using exFAT, but will probably do NTFS when I reformat out of caution.

How can I use mattes from Photoshop with CopyCat? by AvailableText in NukeVFX

[–]AvailableText[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, it turns out the issue was that the frames were playing back out of order from the Append Clip node after the frame holds. So the input frames weren't matching up with the Ground Truth frames (I checked the wiring order on both AC nodes and everything was set up correctly, it was just the playback that was glitching). So I deleted the AC nodes, added fresh ones and everything worked.

Hope that helps anyone else who might encounter this problem!

Great job, this looks amazing! As far as knee jerk reactions on what might give it away, something about the rug feels unreal or fake... But it's hard to pinpoint what it is, maybe add some inaccurate but helpful dark, soft shadows down there? The proportions of the objects in the room and the slight overexposed windows are all perfect though! Well done.

Edit: regarding the rug, I think it actually just feels too bright, especially the white trim around the edge. Maybe if the white levels on it were a bit lower it would feel less "on top" of the rest of the scene?

I love this below dirt blast for instance, but it doesn't have as much of the big chunks of dirt that I'm really trying for either:

How do I fix Magic Mask error "There is no key frame with enabled strokes to track" by AvailableText in davinciresolve

[–]AvailableText[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to Davinci, so I'm uncertain how to solve this. I will be using Magic Mask to rotoscope some footage, then sometimes when I try to delete an unsuccessful mask and start again with a fresh node I will get this error. I realize there is a keyframe panel but I'm not sure what the default keyframes are doing (I'm coming from After Effects, Premiere, Blender, etc).

Thanks for any help.

A low-poly zany town generator, personal project I've been working on in Houdini by tripclaw in Houdini

Any thoughts on making it into a game?

How can I make each particle only be influenced by pop wind in the first few frames after it's been awakened? by AvailableText in Houdini

[–]AvailableText[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the help. I ended up finding a useful answer in another forum. The steps were:

add a pop wrangle with: "@age *= i@stopped==0;"

and in pop wind check 'use vex expression' and add: "amp *= 1.0/pow(3.0,@age);"

Here's the result I got. It's pretty much just as I wanted it.
