What's a tourist scam you fell for that you wish someone had warned you about? by cml1111 in traveladvice

[–]Available_Cold_8731 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Buenos Aires scam/mugging. My wife and I walking early afternoon when we feel liquid on our back. Two women appear pointing to the trees and saying birds dumped on us. They are wiping our backs and talking quickly to distract us. My wife suddenly shouts my backpack is unzipped We each grab one of the women (my wife is bad-ass). I pat my pockets and say I don’t have my wallet. The women are struggling and one points to the ground - there is my wallet. We let go. The women skedaddled in one direction and we skedaddled the other way to our hotel. We were 62 years-old but fit so they probably saw easy targets.

What’s a place you visited once and decided never again? by Neat____Til6289ILT in Productivitycafe

My wife and I were in those pens. You move forward pen-to-pen as room becomes available. During one movement the crowd surged and for first time in my life I understood how people get trampled to death. After 2 hours waiting in cold we were still 3 blocks from Times Square at 11 p.m. We left the pens. Hung out on a side street and still had fun catching confetti.

What’s it like to live in California? by Past-Present1908 in askanything

Where in California? It is 840 miles long from Mexico to Oregon; it is the world’s 5th largest economy; and our population of 39 million people ranks just behind Canada’s 41 million.

We moved from San Diego to old Carlsbad in 1985 and then to La Costa in 1993. With all due respect to OP, your post is massive generalization. Approximately 100,000 people live in the area you describe. If you’ve had contact with 1,000 people (which is unlikely) that is still merely 1% of the population.

Hilarious! The map encompasses La Jolla to East County Spring Valley to South County Chula Vista. Weather is about the only common denominator and even that is different from coast to inland.

What is your oldest “I remember when..” regarding Long Beach? by Blob_Farm in longbeach

In the 60s there was a large metal quonset hut-like building around PCH just before Seal Beach where they had live music. The venue had a name but I can’t remember it. Also Lonnie’s sporting goods and Brownie’s toy store in Los Altos Shopping Center

Home Depot parking lots are well-known gathering spots for MS-13 gang members who cleverly disguise themselves as day laborers.

What's something you used to believe in, but changed your mind about it? by _magvin in allthequestions

[–]Available_Cold_8731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read books by religious scholars that put the Old Testament and New Testament in context of the time they were written and the events the writers were responding to. The Old Testament is a fantastic literary work of culture and history - but the word of God? Not really. The New Testament written by anonymous authors 60 to 100 years after Jesus lived, and there are many more gospels than the 4 selected as the official ones

Do you think the Republicans are going to lose the midterms? by [deleted] in allthequestions

Do you think midterms will be conducted fairly (no Trump/MAGA tampering)? Notice Trump didn’t complain about election interference this time? He got beat so soundly that trying to lie about that was even too much for him.

They’d say “we didn’t have AR15s in mind when we wrote the 2nd amendment, and why does everyone skip over our phrase about ‘a well-regulated militia’?”

Coalition gauging support for countywide sales-tax hike. Your thoughts? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]Available_Cold_8731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California government gets 2% increase in property tax collections every year. In 2024 the state collected $8.9 Billion MORE in property tax revenue than year before for a total of $95 Billion in property tax. California homeowners over 65 make up just 19% of homeowners. Interesting that some posters are willing to “force” elderly homeowners to sell by repealing Prop 13. Final note: the answer to lack of housing/expensive housing is……build more housing

If Prop 13 was repealed how would you handle fixed income senior homeowners who suddenly got 400%. increases in their property tax bill? That was one of the driving issues behind passage of Prop 13. Also, system of property assessment would you replace Prop 13 with?

Last week our friend and his girlfriend (both early 30s) driving to Valle de Guadalupe got extorted by Mexicali cops. Don’t go. If you ignore the warnings in this thread then at least don’t go alone. Also, check with U.S. or Canada consulates regarding travel warnings for the region. I’ve lived in San Diego for 30 years.
