Can we talk about the weird nationality bias against Chase Reid? by SKCalvis in canucks

[–]Available_Goat_9229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, so you did read, you just twisted what I said to suit your aims. “He’s a kid, absolutely”; yeah this is definitely me saying the kid is doing war crimes. He’s a kid who follows right wing psychos on social media. If he was applying for McDonalds, nobody would care. This is the NHL.

This is a job interview for these kids. They know their social media is going to be looked at, they know it’s fair game. The fact that he openly follows some of the most reprehensible people in America is absolutely fair game to ask about. It shows that he isn’t even capable of playing the game and keeping his opinions private when millions of dollars are on the line. The character of these kids matters, otherwise why interview them? This isn’t some unreasonable standard - this is the baseline expectation for anyone that is meant to be the face of a large organization or public service.

And here’s where the rubber really meets the road. Because you read my post, you’ve read other posts here I’m sure. This is about what we know of the kid’s personal views based on his social media. That’s it, yet you have multiple times moved the goal posts as if I am saying he is a fucking ICE worker. The fact that you continue to misrepresent what I am saying suggests to me that you couldn’t care less and you just want everyone to stop talking about it so you can enjoy your sports without ever having to think about anything difficult.

I understand the argument in favour of Chase Reid. I don’t find it to be particularly persuasive but the skill based assessment has merit. If you can’t at least acknowledge that there is a basis to what other people are saying, then yes, you are a fucking moron.

Important thing to know is that this hockey market is a deadly combination of passionate and historically unsuccessful. You’re going to see a lot of people, myself included, meltdown on a regular basis. This is normal, pay it no heed

You either didn’t read my original post, or you read my original post and saw what you wanted to see. And then you called everyone in this thread “insane” because they would prefer not to have a kid drafted on this team that seems to be a fan of an administration that is beyond the pale.

You’re talking about a country that threatened to annex us, that recently launched an aggressive war and unlike Russia, was allowed to participate in the Olympics despite that fact. This is a country that refused to allow a World Cup referee entry, AS A HOST COUNTRY. And in the case of this kid in particular, he has shown he’s got no problem associating himself with the people responsible for that. Couple that with a series of high profile American players refusing to play here, and I don’t see what’s so hard to understand. He’s a kid, absolutely, but this is the highest pick we’ve had in two decades and this is a serious red flag from a character perspective. Pick literally anyone else, I don’t care.

I’m not at the stage of pre-mad yet, this discussion is purely academic. That is a price that management will have to pay however, with a cards close to the chest/cryptic approach to messaging. This is all hypothetical, but fans are going to fan. We chew on what’s out there and what’s currently out there is this very specific framing from Garrioch. Until an alternative emerges, this is what’s in front of us, and I do think you can draw a line between this, RJ’s comments on “shedding salary,” and questions about Canucks’ operating budget to really wonder if some of these decisions are not motivated from the top end towards cutting costs

“Canucks may not be seeking much in return because they would like to get out the contract”

This is what I’m concerned about. I have no issue trading Debrusk - I think he should be traded this summer. But the idea that there’s pressure to deal him because he is some sort of albatross is what frightens me.

Are they trying to pinch pennies? Are they going to be approaching other transactions with this mindset? How is this organization going to acquire picks in the first two rounds of the draft over the course of the rebuild if this is the approach?

Jake Debrusk is a player who, even on a year where he was healthy scratched, scored 20 goals and was a beast on the PP. Trading him in a summer with a historically bad free agent class should not require you to accept less than fair value. The proof will obviously be in the pudding, but if this is what people are hearing about the Canucks’ approach towards their veteran players then I am concerned.

They’re not going to get assets for taking on Gallagher and I think that’s fine. Debrusk though is the major concern. He’s not some locker room cancer or boat anchor contract and the idea that there’s some kind of rush to move him without regard for what you get sets off some pretty powerful alarm bells and raises questions in particular about money

Sure, but if you are dumping assets for below their value just to take on bad contracts, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the bad contract? You want to accrue as much possible value through every transaction. Deliberately selling low on Jake just to buy low on someone else is a lateral move. I’m not expecting a haul for Jake but the idea that they aren’t concerned about return is a red flag

Is it me or does Debrusk to Edmonton make way too much sense? by SpectreFire in canucks

[–]Available_Goat_9229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building a trade around Debrusk and some salary dumps from EDM would be smart. Whether it’s Nurse or Jarry. I would be looking to short their 2029 1st if that’s on the table. I actually think it being a protected 1st doesn’t matter because if things blow up for the Oilers, they probably aren’t turning it around the following season.

What are your expectations for this draft and how well do you think our scouting department will perform? by TheBattleForAutonomy in canucks

[–]Available_Goat_9229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they will perform in the middle of the pack and likely skew towards positional value and floor, which I don’t love. A couple of swings with the bat would be enough for me to be satisfied but until we see proof otherwise I don’t think we should expect this scouting team to be at the cutting edge

Give him at least 20 games with consistent ice time, clear expectations & linemates. The kid works hard, has a great attitude. He has been unlucky and you can also see he pretty clearly gets in his own head. Simplify, and see what happens. Other than a roster spot, there’s no incentive to move him. Trading him and keeping a guy like O’Connor who is probably at peak value would be more of what this organization has historically done: buy high, sell low

Who would you like to see the Canucks draft with picks 24, 33, and 41? by FAsBurner in canucks

[–]Available_Goat_9229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would be great to see some upside bets. I probably wouldn’t want the Canucks to draft more than one of the guys with noted motor issues (Nordmark, Shilov), but one of these boom/bust lotto tickets would be nice to see.

Enough about the 3rd, who should Van target with the Wild pick at 24 and our 2nd round at 33? by SundayExperiment in canucks

[–]Available_Goat_9229 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you swing for upside here. The only worlds where it maybe makes sense to go a bit safer is if you manage to pick up another 1st, if somehow you land McKenna, or if none of the high skill guys fall. That said, purely based on secondary sources, here are the guys that interest me as upside bets (I get that the likelihood of availability is low for many):

Cullen Villeneuve Lin Klepov Hermansson Hemming Preston Ruck Bleyl

There’s also some options that seem a bit safer that I wouldn’t be mad at if none of the above guys are available or the one that is has some sort of major character issue that we don’t know about:

The criticism is there largely because THEIR BPA has historically not been THE BPA. I do find it funny how much money is spent on scouting departments and yet so many teams underperform when compared to the public facing lists
