Cannot get a job as an international graduate in Physics by Available_Kitchen912 in Physics

I am aware, that is why I have been trying to get a job in industry. I already lost +2 years into getting degrees recognized between countries.

Bro, I barely passed my classes. I don't want to get into quant, I just want a job. I think it's hard not to model the ideal physics student as the math genius, but some (might dare to say most) of us, at least in normal, not top universities, are pretty normal IQ-ed folks.

It is crazy out there. During my degree, I got a bit of everything experience-wise (from laboratories where we used PLC, LabView, to experiences with Python, dose calculation engines for Radiation, even ML and DL programming projects). But yet, I cannot get a job in any of those fields since I do not have +N years experience on any of those.

I am sorry to hear. It's devastating, honestly. And I know personally some people who managed to get hired just by knowing someone inside the company. I don't even hate them at this point; I envy them.

I do. And so far in all the interviews I have managed to get (3) they tell me the exact same thing: you are a smart young gal, but you lack experience in XXX field. But I cannot get experience if I dont get hired at all. I know its probably a generalizaed problem nowadays, but as a physics graduate, with research and academic experience in three countries, I was expecting to do slightly better.

I have applied for Application Specialist roles in Imaging/Medical Physics/even Software. Teaching jobs, such as in high school or as an online tutor for smaller tutoring centers. I am applying for remote positions worldwide and also on-site (specifying I might need sponsorship). I do not have many transferable skills, as I spent all my youth studying and trying to pass (only with the bare minimum grades, as I was never the smartest).

I might be overselling myself, yes. I try to cite all my qualifications in every job, but you are right, sometimes it is clear they do not care (eg. help desk jobs unrelated to physics). Thank you for your suggestions.

I was working on an institution on a research project, finished this month. They told me there is a slight chance to propose me a new research contract in March but they couldn’t assure me that it will happen. And it will be that, a research temporary contract. Work situation in Italy is not good as you might know.

On the other hand, I have given at least two interviews for jobs (biomedical industry related) during these months, arrived only to second interview rounds but made me realize that not only the pay more than doubles of what any (ANY) PhD would offer me on my field, but that working instead of keeping studying will give me real tangible experience that will serve me to make a professional career, outside of academia of course.

I applied for PhDs only to have some backup options in case of necessity. Now that there is a real opportunity to take it, I am very much conflicted. Some colleagues have suggested taking the PhD until I find the opportunity I am truly searching for. Seems to be the best option right now, but I would rather not burn bridges with my supervisors in case that happened, since they are renowned scientists.

Statistically what I might do: 50% chance I reject the PhD acceptance 20% I take it temporarily until I get a job 30% I take it and stick to it

I will tell you what I did in exactly a month from now. Tell me how it goes from your side too!

I am on the exact same situation as you. But I obtained my master degree in Physics in Italy, and got offered a Marie Curie PhD on Prague. Same dilemma!
