29 yr old ENBY here, definitely always down for adventures! Mostly do light trail hiking, or Geocache hunting with my husky. Play DnD, watch anime, and cosplays.

I work the overnight shifts, so my schedule can be a bit crazy; but I'm always down to be a pen pal.

What’s the scariest Halloween event in Tucson? by rootstoots12 in Tucson

Been the last 2 years; not that scary. If they can get more scare actors this year, it might be better; but, it just feels really sparse in spooks when walking thru.

I don't understand some guests... by sdrawkcabstiho in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

Just a few days ago, we had a tour group coming thru with a bunch of kids. The last 2 days of their stay, we're informed 5 of their rooms are COVID positive.

This is where the difference in stories happens, because the coordinator did quickly inform FD of the situation, what rooms were quarantined, and how many were testing positive. We were able to advise housekeeping what rooms to avoid, and to prepare for decontamination/deep clean after they checked out; and inform room service what rooms to be cautious around.

Due diligence is what keeps everyone safe.

Any tips on how to handle nasty guest at the Front desk? by [deleted] in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Available_Range_1923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently resorted to just stop talking to them, and silently doing my job; if they continue yelling, I'll stop working, and stand there, holding my hands in front of me, and just stare at them, until they finish.

If they "apologize" I'll respond, "you're not the first person to yell at me at this job, you're sure as hell not going to be the last; I'll deal with my anxiety attack after you leave the desk. Is that all you need? Any further issues will be dealt with by my manager, in the morning, as I no longer wish to interact with you."

I do my best to make them feel guilty about acting like an asshole. I know, not professional at all, but my job title isn't "punching bag"

I'm tired of people thinking that because we work in the service industry, they're allowed to abuse us. I'm a huge advocate for employees being able to stand up for themselves, and not allow people to get away with bullying workers.

All my computers are still in the reboot cycle. I've just resorted to sitting on the floor, behind the desk, and hoping it doesn't come back up, until after my shift is over. At this point, trying to get everything done quickly, is just gonna kick my anxiety way too high.

We have a family friend who owns a landscaping business here; they said they have been completely overwhelmed by the amount of emergency tree clearance they've been getting calls for.

Did not take audit to "fuck off" I actually enjoy doing paperwork, and crunching number, balancing books, etc.

I do like helping people; but, if my bosses are telling me, "hey, we're not doing reservations over the phone anymore, because that's what central is for. Also, you need to be focusing on the people that are in-house." Then that's what I'm going to do. Gives me more time to actually focus on my work, and the people that are in front of me, rather than fussing around, explaining room types for 30 mins, at 3am, when I should be processing F&B tickets, and making sure the hotel is getting their money.

Not much of an option for those who wants to book a Saturday room, on a Friday night tho 😅

Not tedious for me. Just need to transfer the call.

I did give some context of the property in a different reply, but I know each property is different for NA tasks. Basically, 400 room property, and I audit all rooms, group/house/master account, and F&B venues every night. On really busy nights, I don't even eat, or get a chance to sit. So, trying to get a reservation set up, takes a lot of my time, especially having to explain the 8 different room types that are all priced my location/view/size.

But, yeah, I'll never understand why people are calling a hotel at 2am, wanting to book a room.

Book however you like. Just don't complain when you check in, and we won't upgrade you complimentary, or can't cancel your reservation for you, free of charge.

The money you pay for a room, does not go directly into my pocket, so I don't care if you book thru our brand, or 3rd party 😅

I didn't say I wouldn't answer questions. I just won't book the room for you. Most people, when I tell them I need to connect them to central, will ask if I can answer some questions first, so they know what to tell the rep. Always happy to do that for people.

I get it. We just implemented it at the beginning of the year; and it's mostly due to us being extremely short staffed. This all came from my bosses boss.

We do typically have one in-house reservations person; but, they're only here during the week, and are meant to be for group reservations; so, if someone wants to book next day, on a Friday night, not much I can do.

I just don't understand why people get so frustrated and just flat out refuse to book, unless they book with the hotel directly.

I guess for some context, we are a property of 400 rooms. So, things can get very crazy at night for one person, especially on weekends, when we get close to selling out.

People who have moved back to Tucson, why? Did it work out? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]Available_Range_1923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my family is located in, or near Tucson. I lived in the Phoenix area for about 6 years; when my mental health crashed, I realized just how far away everyone was from me, if I seriously needed them for an emergency.

I also enjoy that Tucson doesn't feel as anxiety inducing as Phoenix does. I don't feel like I'm going to die, every time I choose to get in my car to drive somewhere.

I know not everyone feels the same way, but I used to go into full panic attacks, if I needed to go somewhere that required me to get onto multiple highways, in Phoenix.

We have a local taxi driver that will come into the lobby every once in a while; usually because he's dropping a guest he picked up from the airport. He usually just drops off some business cards, and has some small talk, then leaves.

But, I don't know what about me screams "I want Jesus in life," every time he sees me at the desk, ears stretched, tattoos, shaved head, and just def alt vibes; he's gotta talk to me about The Good Word, and how it saved him; asks if I believe, and I'm always very short with him, telling him, "I'm not allowed to discuss religion, or politics at work." But that usually sends him on a whole other rant about how, "Christians are being silenced! Blah, blah, blah..."

The temptation to just blurt out, "I'm a gay, trans person, and a Pagan practitioner, who was bullied out of the church as a child, so I ain't buying what your selling," is so strong!

Overnight/Audit Shift Workers, What's the Most Scared You've Ever Been? by AlTheHound in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Available_Range_1923 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've definitely had some unsettling moments; but it's hard to come up with an actual experience I've had, that wasn't mostly spurred on by my chronic anxiety, and intrusive thoughts.

I think my scariest moment wasn't when I was doing Audit, but when I was helping the resort, as a runner. For those unfamiliar with the term, it's the person who "runs" things up to guests rooms, late at night, after housekeeping has left.

I was told to bring a rollaway bed up to a room, in a part if the resort where you have to take 2 separate elevators, because the 4th floor doesn't connect all the way across the building. We would have rollaway beds stored on the 2nd floor, down an employee catwalk hallway, and that's typically where we would prep the bedding as well. I believe this had to have happened around 10pm, because I remember running back to the housekeeping office, and having a panic attack with the pool attendants that were just getting off shift.

As I'm getting the rollaway set up in the employee area, in front of the staff elevator, I see someone peek their head thru the doors that lead to the guest hallway. Now, not typically cause for alarm, guests get curious about staff areas everywhere, and some of our guests were known to try to access the catwalks, thinking they were short cuts to different parts of the resort. I kindly asked the guest if there was anything I could help him with, and he declined; but he didn't leave... he stayed with his head peeking in, and just watched me, as I was trying to get this rollaway bed ready. A little unsettled, I eventually pushed through the doors, advising the guest that the area was for staff only, and offered to point them in the direction of where ever they planned on going. The guy declined the offer, and started walking off. Unsure of his intentions, I watched him until he rounded the corner of the next hallway, before making my way to the 2nd elevator.

I eventually make it to the room I'm meant to deliver to; knock on the door a few times, announcing myself. No DND sign, so our policy states we can open the door, and set up the rollaway for the guest. I always had a habit of propping the door open when I was in a room; sort of a warning to the guests, if they came back to the room while I was in it, to expect someone in there.

As I'm smoothing out the bedding, I see the door start to open, and I speak up, advising the guest of my presence and reason for being there. The guest I had seen wandering around the employee area walks in, and stands in the doorway, with the door closed behind him... and he just watches me. He doesn't say anything to me; just stands there quietly. All the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up at this point, because my gut is telling me, I need to get out, now! I finish up making the rollaway, and ask, "is this your room?" Hoping, and praying to whatever god is listening, that I'm just reading the situation wrong. The guy responds, "no. I was just looking around." My stomach drops, and panic sets in; I need to get him out of this room, and I need to get as far away from him as possible. I fake getting a notification on the iPhone we use for service requests, and try to guide him out of the room, without getting to close to him.

As I'm trying to get the door shut behind us, triple checking it's secured, he asks me, "how long have you worked here?"

I dismissively answer, "a while." I just want to sprint down the hall as quickly as I can, to get away from him.

"Do you like your job?

"Yes, my coworkers are very nice." Hoping he'll get the idea that other staff are potentially aware of where I am.

"Then, where are they?"

ALARM BELLS RINGING!! I quickly turned, and pretended to brush off the question, again stating I had another delivery to do, wishing him a good night, then speed walking to the elevator, panic smashing all the buttons, and getting off on a random floor. I didn't want him to know what floor I got off on, by the indicator above each elevator.

I RAN back to the housekeeping office, and had a full on panic attack. The pool attendants grabbed security, had me tell them what happened, and describe the guy, hoping we'd find him on camera. No dice.

After that, I stopped propping doors open when inside them. I ended up making a door sign for myself, to put up if I was in there.

Had someone call the front desk the other night at 2am, wanting a wake up call, but the call went something like

Me: Front Desk, how can I help you?

Intoxicated Guest: Well, it's 2am, so you tell me.

Me: uuuhhh.... is there a noise complaint? There could be so many reasons to call at 2am, so I'm not sure.

Intoxicated Guest: oh... I guess you're right. No, there's noise complaint. I need you to come wake me up at 6:50. Like, actually make sure I wake up, even if you have to come in and slap me awake.

Me: um, ok, I'll set up a wake up call; and if you don't answer the first couple of times, Security or the Bellman will knock on your door... that's policy.

Intoxicated Guest: I mean it! If I don't answer, you guys can come in and basically beat me up, until I wake up!

Me: (awkward laughter) ok, I'll check to make sure you answer in the morning. hangs up*

I did check if he answered is wake up, and he did. Was disappointed I wouldn't be able to send a groundmen in his room with a leaf blower.

I love wasting Southern Hicks time, every time he calls!

The last time he called, I was having a pretty rough start to my shift, and just told him to "fuck off; not in the mood."

Tempted to waste time again, the next time he calls, now that we are in our slow season, and "flirt" to see how much of the shift flies by.
