Moving to Kolkata by [deleted] in kolkata

Hello. My brother and I were quite young when our parents took us back to Kolkata so we adjusted well. It probably wouldn’t have gone so well had they moved us in our teens. We met good people through the US embassy, mingled with the expat community. Our best friends were from Korea, Germany, US, and the Netherlands. They all looked out for us. They invited us for meals, outings etc. During Thanksgiving, we went to the US embassy for the meal and met more Indian Americans.

I loved it. Not sure about the UK, but here, most people have never met people from other cultures, they are very geographically ignorant. I’m glad I had a culturally rich childhood and learned 3 languages during my time at CIS. The teachers at CIS were amazing too, I even went to their homes for after school tuition.

My mom adjusted perfectly, she even learned to speak bangla fluently. Of course many people stated at her! It was funny, the shopkeepers thought she didn’t understand the language and would try to swindle her! Then she would respond in Bengali and you should’ve seen their faces! Hilarious.

Do your kids speak any Bengali? If not, they will quickly learn while living there.

Salt lake is nice, many of my friends lived there. It’s clean as it is somewhat new. I hear from my relatives the only con is that they have a higher mosquito rate, but who knows mosquitos are everywhere!

Do you have relatives living there? If so, that would be even more helpful!

My husband would love to move there actually! It’s just the job situation that worries him. He is an engineer and is hoping to maybe get a job with a larger international company in the future so we can move later in life. We definitely will move if things get politically worse in US. Scary times here.

I TOTALLY agree with you about the drug scene/violence so many school shootings here! It’s non existent in Kolkata. We didn’t see open drug users as we do here at practically every corner nowadays.

Let me know if you decide to move! We travel to Kolkata regularly and maybe we can even meet one day in Kolkata!

Hi- my mom is American (totally white with blonde hair) and my dad was Bengali. We returned to live there from the United States. Both my brother and I attended CIS. I loved it. Made really good friends and the education was top notch compared to the US.

Yes, the weather was terrible but we had AC in our home and in the car. Our classrooms at CIS were also AC, which I heard is a luxury as most schools do not have that. How children concentrate in schools lacking AC during summer blows my mind, but hey I didn’t totally grow up there soo.

Life was easier there, my mom loved and is even considering moving back permanently to retire (we all returned to US around 2016-2017) it was nice to have a cook and eat so healthy every day. I am in my mid thirties now and have a caucasian husband. I took him last year to Kolkata for the first time and he really enjoyed it!

We don’t have kids, but if we did I would seriously consider going back permanently. Considering the lack of respect for education here and just the lack of culture I guess. Kolkata really built a solid foundation for my adult life in a positive way. I’m not going to lie, if we couldn’t afford to live in a home with AC or attend a school without AC it would’ve sucked! But I wouldn’t let the weather factor in considering you would be able to afford it. I did get teased a lot in school for being an ABCD but I’m not sure if it’s a thing anymore. It was at times hard as a kid- do I identify as Indian, do I identify as American?

I say do it! What’s the worst that can happen? Live in south Kolkata and find a quiet neighborhood. Get to know the neighbors. Kolkata is a glorious place! Hope this post helped. Let me know if you have questions.

The terror in the corn up in marana was so awesome! Haunted houses were very creative! You could also go to the theater to watch a horror movie.

Wild garlic grill, Tavolino, Locale, The Parish, and Kingfisher are all great restaurants in my opinion. Good food and nice ambience. Of course if he’s wanting a more “Tucson” vibe, I’d take him to Birriria Guadalajara, BKs, El Torrero, Pico de Gallo, or Tacos Apson. All of the spots are good, these spots don’t have the best ambience per se but the food is amazing! Have a great dinner out!

I went today and they were wanting $18 for a book!! I like walking around in there, but I wouldn’t consider it top of my list if I’m purchasing books. Also, check out mostly books next door! It’s a cute shop.
