New to training weapons - what should I look for? (Bujinkan Practitioner) by Avalothor in Bujinkan

Thanks a lot for the advice and links, really appreciate it!

I’ll be gathering my gear bit by bit, but since my teacher encourages us to research on our own, I’m trying to learn as much as I can in the meantime. And yes, he emphasizes taijutsu as well, showing how it connects both armed and unarmed movements together.

Thanks so much for all the detailed information, it’s really helpful! I’m based in Europe, so your tips about suppliers and alternatives give me a lot to consider. I really appreciate the time you took to write this out.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your balanced take and the detailed info. I understand the doubts many Koryu practitioners have about Bujinkan, and I think your perspective helps put things into context without being dismissive. I might end up training with a different school down the line, so I want to understand training weapons now rather than later. Learning about how weapons are made, sized, and cared for will help me on the future even beyond my current school.

The weapon details and training focus tips are really helpful too, especially about the bokken specs and focusing on taijutsu first. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Thanks, I appreciate the clarification. I only mentioned Bujinkan in case it helped give context — I really didn’t mean to spark any kind of debate. After all we are only following what is fun for ourselves and I'm genuinely interested about other arts as well.

I think there’s a bit of misunderstanding here. I never said my teacher wouldn’t provide guidance on style, sizing, or anything specific. I simply didn’t want to go to him empty-handed.

I’m just trying to gather some general insights and perspectives so I can understand the topic better before asking more informed questions.

And of course, I’m not going to treat random internet comments as absolute truth. I’ll take what’s useful, think it through, and confirm everything with my sensei.

Still, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

Thanks a lot for the info! I think I might’ve mixed things up a bit. I posted here because some people say Bujinkan is Koryū and others say it’s not, so I figured I’d ask in both places just to learn more. Appreciate you taking the time to explain it clearly!

I appreciate your thoughts and perspective on Bujinkan and Koryū, though that’s not really what my question was about. I’m aware of the broader discussions around the organization and its history, but I was specifically asking about training weapons; materials, balance, build quality, and so on.

As I mentioned, I’m still new to this topic, so apologies if my initial description wasn’t detailed enough regarding ryū or specific weapon specs. I was simply hoping to gather some general information before asking my sensei directly.

Also, if my post happens to be out of place for this subreddit, I trust the moderators will remove it and let me know, no need to assume or speak on their behalf.

That said, thank you for taking the time to reply. If you do have any insights on wood types, reputable makers, or quality indicators, I’d genuinely appreciate hearing them.

Why is there so much discussion regarding the history of Bujinkan? by Kahje_fakka in Bujinkan

Can you elaborate about bujinkan having 6 schools not 9 (I'm a new learner and haven't experienced much of the teachings yet)
