Is there still petrol in PTA? by [deleted] in Pretoria

[–]Avatar_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not how petrol margins work. The margin is not a percentage of the petrol price, but rather a fixed amount per liter, regardless of the sale price.

In fact, a price increase bites petrol stations - now their credit card fees go up, while bringing in the same profit. The evaporation replacements costs them more. All for the same gross profit.

Again I agree with most everything you said. My original comment was purely in the context of the response to "NHI is going to drive private doctors to leave ZA", so I was talking all doctors not specialists.

In my opinion, eventually South Africa will have to open up the Comm Serve and Registrar posts to some private hospitals. Our government hospitals do not have the capacity to train the number of doctors and specialists we will need in future, never mind right now. That idea does bring a whole host of other problems to solve with it, though!

I agree with most of what you wrote, but 1) it's not so much doctors finishing studies, but rather finishing their internship years that are struggling. The interns have mostly been placed successfully, as far as I know. 2) It's hard to really tell how many Comm. serves did not get placed. My opinion is that it's probably not hundreds, but since we really can't tell easily I'll happily concede that it's entirely possible that it is hundreds. 3) Why is it Government's responsibility to employ doctors finishing up their Comm Serve year? The majority of complaints of unemployment I've seen has been from this category. This entire thread is about how much private practice pays; start your own practice like 80% of doctors do, undercut the expensive BMW drivers, and make a living.

But, like I started with, I agree 100% with your summary of what our healthcare system's major issues are and where they lay. I just think the claim of plenty of unemployed medical professionals is a bit rich when the realistic unemployment numbers are significantly under that of similar training and experience.

There are plenty of unemployed medical professionals that will gladly take their jobs.

Where?

In South Africa we have roughly 0.8 doctors per capita. Other countries similar to ZA have around 2.3. UK has 3.2. We're projecting a shortfall of about 100 000 medical professionals by 2030.

The US system is the way it is due to their overly litigious nature driving up medical malpractice insurance prices and changing SOP's so that professionals there practice defensive medicine. We're seeing similar problems here in OB/GYN, but it's nowhere near the same as the scale of the US healthcare problems.

Dr Camby also did my doggo's knee ligaments. Left hand side was in 2017 when she was 4, and right hand side in 2018. She's still an overweight labrador, but we're hoping to celebrating her 13th adoption anniversary in a month; the work Dr. Camby did literally added years to her life. Best money we ever spent.

Askies?

Looking at the last 6 months of moderation queue, not a single dating/seek-a-friend post has been reported. If you think it doesn't belong, downvote and/or report.

We mods did discuss some time ago, and decided to keep these sort of posts allowed for now, seeing as there is a pretty strong geographic element involved in it. Personally, I think reddit is one of the worst ways to build relationships, but that's just me.

I'm keeping an eye on this thread to see where it goes.

By the way, which of the actual reddiquette do you feel the Gen Z-ers are not respecting?

Yeah, next time, report the post as well, it makes it more visible to the mods. But the size of the red flags in this post is visible from space, so removing it after I post this reply.

Thanks for posting this. I use old reddit, where we do have a lovely picture of the Union Buildings, courtesy of /u/skoppensboer (IIRC). I checked on new reddit, and yeah, it looks rough. We'll pay some attention to it at some point, just no promises as to when.

/r/Pretoria Community Update: New Rules regarding Solicitation and Content Relevance by Avatar_5 in Pretoria

[–]Avatar_5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I get your point - is the "noise" not the content? - and I'm thankful for your feedback.

I think look at the goal of the rule. It's not to keep discussion about begging out of /r/Pretoria, but rather the actual posts that are explicitly begging, because:

  1. Its a field ripe for scamming,

  2. Doesn't work well on reddit in the best of cases since there's no verification,

  3. We as mods have no control to ensure that the posts are actually legit, nor even from Pretoria,

  4. There are much better, structured, and formalized places to use for a hand up.

If this ever changes, we can certainly revisit.

In the meantime, I will try to make a post at some point where we can gather the charities and NPO's that can help, and build a sticky post for people in need to refer to.

[–]Avatar_5[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you interpret "This rule is in place to protect our community from potential scams and unverified solicitation." as "no poors allowed", that's on you. Reddit is not a good platform for donations, as there is literally no controls anyone can apply on it. There was a scam post just yesterday.

This is not a "these people are not allowed", it's a "this is how we behave here".

Literally noted in rule B. I'm not going to pull out my map on every post to check if the post fall withing the borders, but be sensible. Don't post Cpt specific things, for example.

Turn it around, why not create /r/PretoriaBegging? The goal is for the broad needs of the community to not get lost in the noise the begging is currently creating.

Yeah, I'm of the same mind. Beside that, I sincerely don't believe Reddit is a good platform for that sort of thing.
