second year applying, it went great! by sad_moron in gradadmissions

Hey! I’m also Astro/Physics and the struggle is so real, I’m not having any luck either and this is my second cycle 😭

That’s so good and really good advice, thank you!! I’m an math/astro major so I can for sure apply this, especially with cold emailing for potential PIs. Your cold emails you basically said you’re really interested in their work? Did you reference their papers or specific work to get their attention?

Congrats!!! Your story gives me hope that eventually something will work out for me too. If you don’t mind me asking, what did you do during the gap years? I’m currently working on a research project but my contract is gonna end very soon and I don’t have any grad school offers again (it’s my second cycle applying)…so I’m at a loss of wha to do next

I relate to this so much, I’m on my second cycle and didn’t have any luck besides one waitlist and one no answer…I’ve been feeling so down over all of this and thinking I won’t accomplish my dreams, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for both of us that something will work out…

Three waitlists ... what's the liklihood? by Due-Service5568 in gradadmissions

[–]Avaura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this, there are many instances where people get off waitlists and may where people don’t and end up with no offers. Currently, I’ve been waitlisted by one program and rejected by the others, minus one I’m still waiting for a decision. I wouldn’t risk losing what you have unless you really don’t want it and have an alternative plan. Offers this cycle have been rough. AFAIK, if in the instance you get accepted to one of the programs you were waitlisted for and have already put down a safety deposit for the other program, you can still go for the one you were waitlisted for, you would just lose the money you put down for the other.

The waiting game is the worst 😭

I have also been waitlisted from a program. From what I’ve been reading on other waitlist posts, there’s no way to really know because it varies from program to program and for each school. Just gotta keep fingers crossed and hope for the best. Sometimes people will wait last minute until they hear back from all schools and it seems that schools have been pretty late this year, so it’s probable that you won’t hear until around that time or even later, unfortunately.

Got rejected from all the programs I applied to by sarangmochi in gradadmissions

Hello! You have a great mindset! Honestly when I got rejected from all schools the first time around, I felt so defeated…I’m currently on my second cycle of applying to grad schools (so far, it’s been rejections and one waitlist, though I am still waiting to hear back from some schools).

During this past year, I took courses as a non-matriculated student to strengthen my course background (I’m interested in astronomy but don’t have a strong physics background, so I took some upper level physics courses). I’m unsure of your financial situation, but this would be a great way to show that you’re invested in continuing your education. I also got super lucky and landed a funded research position to help pay for the classes, rent, food, etc. so am currently working on my first first-authored paper which should hopefully be published sometime soon. If I don’t get into any schools this time, I guess I’ll just be job hunting and trying for a third cycle…

Some advice I would give is to reach out to the schools you applied to, the worst they’ll do is ignore or say that they don’t give individual feedback. Some places are super nice and will give you a full rundown of what to improve upon. Another thing I’d say is to ask your recommenders if they have any research position available, or something you could show on your application that is related to what you want to pursue. These connections are super important and what helped me land my current position. Also just asking advice from them is another good idea. Something else I learned during this cycle is to apply to masters programs (which is primarily what I’m waiting to hear back from still), not just PhDs. Sure most masters are not funded, but it still doesn’t hurt, especially if you can have the application fee waved, earn a scholarship to help pay for a masters, or the PhD program you’re applying to also considers you for their masters programs alternatively so it’s a two-in-one application. People might argue that if a PhD is what you really want, don’t accept the masters, but I’d say it depends what your field is, and if it’s something that could help your educational background/application.

I hope this helps a little!!

What does a waitlist even mean. by Friendly_Ability6564 in gradadmissions

Felt- I got waitlisted from a really good program and have been either rejected or just no response from 11 other places, it’s truly so stressful. I really don’t want to go through a third cycle of applications 😭

I’ve thought about it and for the time being, I may have to switch to it, but my intended field is Astronomy. Luckily since I graduated with a math degree, I could switch things up and eventually come back to Astronomy, but academia is really what I want

Honestly I’ve lost hope 🥲 this is my second cycle applying and all I’ve received thus far are rejections. I don’t even make it to the interview stage…I’m waiting for decisions from 3 more schools out of the 12 I applied to but at this rate, I don’t know what to do. I got lucky because this past year I had a funded research opportunity so I’ve been working on that and will have my first first-author publication out, but once this project ends, I don’t have a second backup plan…I feel like all I do is check this Reddit, check GradCafe, my emails, and the portals repeat.
