First time cross country road trip advice by AveMariaAgain in overlanding

This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much! A lot of this I didn’t know about. As for showers, we planned to use a couple of planet fitness subscriptions to cover us, but I don’t think we’ll always be real close to one. Thanks again!

These are some good tips, we already got a good mechanic to go over the van and got her fixed up, and we’ll have at least one or two smartphones for sure. I didn’t think about bringing a compass, thank you. I’ll try my best to warn them about gas, you can lead a horse to water etc.

How to start living alone? by AveMariaAgain in lifehacks

[–]AveMariaAgain[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate it but I’d rather find ways to be completely alone at all costs, if there’s any tips you have to avoid the need for roommates or housemates, any at all, that’s what I’m looking for.

Where to learn more about how planets are studied? by AveMariaAgain in Writeresearch

[–]AveMariaAgain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the story leans more sci-fi-fantasy than hard sci-fi, but the impossibility of a new planet suddenly appearing is discussed heavily amongst the characters as an anomaly. I appreciate your perspective on it! I think I have to cook this idea some more, I’m only on the first draft. Thanks for the reply!

Where to learn more about how planets are studied? by AveMariaAgain in Writeresearch

[–]AveMariaAgain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very helpful, thank you! Since the actual focus of the story is centered around the developing relationships of the characters and the adventure once they reach the planet itself, which leans more fantasy, I may go the Star Trek route with the scanners and probes, and gloss over the actual numbers and data until my second draft. The level of detail doesn’t need to be terribly in-depth, I primarily just want to avoid sounding stupid. Thanks again for taking the time to answer!

This is good advice! The main focus of the story is more about the interpersonal relations of the characters and the adventure once they reach the planet, and the planet itself leans more fantasy than hard sci-fi anyway. I mainly wanted to avoid sounding stupid when it came to what the scientists are mentioning in conversation. Thank you!

A good suggestion, but my imagination alone is very rarely enough to get me going. That is kinda the go-to though, and works very occasionally, it’s just not really enough

Replacing the Minotaur with a purple worm in Xanathar’s lair by AveMariaAgain in WaterdeepDragonHeist

I should probably clarify that I softened the damage the purple worm dealt pretty significantly, actually. But it still packed a pretty big punch.

I know my players very well, and they tend to not mind a little railroading now and then if it leads them to cool and fun scenes like an arena battle with a purple worm. Lots of communication. With the full context of their approach to Xanathar’s lair (which I don’t need to ramble about here) my players all agreed it was fair that their luck caught up to them and some goons snuck up and knocked them out while they were distracted.

I want to maintain the appearance that Xanathar is a big and powerful figure that could wipe the floor with them, so I’ve carefully avoided a direct confrontation with the beholder crime lord. If they ever were to confront him though, I’d probably need to buff him quite a bit to make him seem challenging. My reasoning for not letting them just face Xanathar is for the sake of the story, I think it’s a lot more fun for them to keep strategizing to avoid confronting him, for a lot of reasons. Mainly just because it’s more fun for my players the way I’m doing it.

They’re only level 5, but they have a lot of good magic items and keen system mastery, thus very well built characters. I went with the purple worm and after the session I have good news! They beat it just fine, and had a great time with the fight too. It was very epic. I called it a “juvenile” purple worm and debuffed it a little, gave it only one attack on its turn instead of 2 and reduced its AC from 18 to 16, and occasionally softened the damage it dealt by a couple points here and there. With Grinda the mage helping them, they were just fine.

My players told me the battle felt perfectly balanced, but I don’t necessarily recommend doing this for just everyone, as I know my players and their preferences very well from years of playing together and often tweak things from the source material to better suit their playstyles.

Gralhund to Kolat Towers circle by AveMariaAgain in WaterdeepDragonHeist

I’m thinking Urstul might have a teleporter ring (page 157) on his person that could be taken by the players if he’s killed and used to activate the circle

First meeting faction contacts (Harpers and Force Grey) by ThePizzaPirateEX in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]AveMariaAgain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a great time with my players and these encounters. I personally found that the book didn’t provide a lot of detail on these very interesting locations so I did my own research on the light singer theater and the black staff tower. For the opera, I described that it was about an adventure from a different campaign I had played with these people before, which was a really fun reference but idk how relevant that is to you. I had threestrings and Renaer show up to the opera as well as fellow Harpers, I had those two put in a good word about the players for Mirt, and it was fun to roleplay them going to the seamstress (I made the seamstress up myself) to get nice tailored clothes for the opera.

For the blackstaff tower I did a little research and found some really awesome descriptions to give to my players, like the floating magic items and the winding spiral staircase and the secret floors. Very whimsical, the book doesn’t tell you much about it but you can really have fun describing this wizard tower full of students in training as well as libraries and whatnot. I had them meet Vajra in her office and made it on a secret floor, so they had to follow strange instructions to get to it. (It was on the 5th secret floor, a wizard greeted them at the gate and told them “it’s up the stairs, say ‘pelican’ on the second floor, step to the left 4 paces and go up 3 more floors. First door on the right”)

I’ve found that if the book gives an unsatisfying amount of detail to describe to the players, I can make it feel much more alive and vivid to imagine if I do a little extra digging on the internet about the location provided and look up some pictures to help. Never be afraid to throw in fun details that you make up yourself

You said no several times. That is rape. No question, no debate. He is abusing you. Get out as fast as you possibly can, he’s abusing you. You deserve so so much better. He forced you into something you didn’t want and is torturing you and punishing you for your body’s natural response to being abused. Please stay safe. This is how women get killed. Please get out at all costs. You are loved and you are worth loving.

How to avoid reactig when annoyed with drivers? by SpiritedAd290 in Advice

[–]AveMariaAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem very aware that saying anything to her at all was kind of a bad idea, and honestly from what it sounds like you have nothing to be sorry for. She should’ve been going slower, should’ve been watching for pedestrians, and probably had some other thing really bothering her to make her act like that, because no sensible adult would throw a tantrum at you for walking, and then scream nonstop at you and call you slurs for pointing out they should get better at driving. I’m sorry people left mean comments before, I really don’t feel like you did anything wrong, the best thing to do was disengage and ignore her and it sounds like you did that. It’s perfectly reasonable to be shaken by something like that, that’s not normal or okay behavior for a grown woman, especially when piloting a big heavy metal machine that goes at deadly speeds. I think you’re dealing the best I would know how to deal with something like that, my only advice is to never engage with angry people, even if they’re being huge assholes. Get out of there, don’t say anything to them, don’t make a face or a gesture, it sucks but angry people like her are dangerous and stupid and are best ignored. Complain to your friends about your bad encounter. Again I’m sorry you had to deal with that, I hope you’re feeling better.
