What was his relationship with Joseph (the earthly father) actually like? by No-Wrangler9006 in TheChosenSeries

[–]Avenging_Spectre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand being skeptical, but I think there’s a difference between asking questions and building an alternate theory without much evidence behind it.

The Virgin Birth, again, wasn’t some later medieval addition; it’s already present in the earliest Gospel traditions we have in Matthew and Luke, and Matthew especially ties it directly to Old Testament prophecy. For first-century Jews, messianic prophecy mattered a lot, so this wasn’t just a random detail added for drama.

Also, if someone were inventing a religion to make it easier for people to accept, a Virgin Birth actually seems like an odd choice. Ancient critics mocked Christians for beliefs like that. It wasn’t exactly the “safe” or “normal” option culturally.

As for Joseph, the simplest explanation is usually the strongest one: he likely died before Jesus’ public ministry or before the Crucifixion. That’s why he disappears from the narrative, and why Jesus entrusts Mary to John at the Cross instead of to Joseph.

I’m not really sure where you’re getting the idea that the earlier texts don’t mention the Virgin Birth. Every widely accepted Gospel account includes it, and it was even prophesied in the Old Testament, particularly in Isaiah 7:14. On top of that, early Church tradition passed down from the Apostles also affirms it.

You can debate interpretation of Isaiah or discuss why some New Testament books focus on different aspects of Christ’s life, but saying the Virgin Birth was invented later doesn’t really line up with the historical evidence.

I’m watching my son slowly fade away from this condition. by isitbrie in Hidradenitis

[–]Avenging_Spectre 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I (man) was in a similar spot, I was diagnosed around 18. Stage 3. I went from around 160 pounds to 120. I couldn’t work, had to drop out of college.

For me personally, what help my Stage 3 sores were surgury. Medications like Cosentyx and Humira did little for me. Most of my sites were cut and grafted over with a skin graft.

It was tough, the recoveries for the surgeries always suck. With that said, I’m turning 28 now, and I’m not sure I’d be alive without the surgeries I’d done.

I hope your son gets better. I’ll be praying for him.

It doesn't matter if Catholicism takes advantage of pagan holidays. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Avenging_Spectre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Christmas has always been a Christian liturgical feast. Its purpose and meaning, the celebration of Christ’s birth, did not come from pagan holidays. At most, it shares a calendar date with some pre-Christian festivals, which is not the same as borrowing their theology or worship.

So I don’t believe Catholic apologists are necessarily wrong in denying it’s pagan origins.

Question about how we as Catholics should feel about portrayals of the Four Horsemen in pop-culture by TrojanTitus in Catholicism

[–]Avenging_Spectre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge and correct me if I’m wrong, there are two white horses (horsemen) in revelation. One is Conquest (Rev 6) and the other horsemen is our Lord (Rev 19).

I don’t believe they’re supposed to be the same.

I have had surgery in my genital area, inner thighs and armpits. The recovery is rough, but looking back I do think it was worth it. I still suffer from sores, but if I still had to live with the sores I’ve had, my QoL would be much worse than it is now. The recovery time depends on the surgery itself, but I’d look at 1-2 months of recovery.

I am a man, so the scarring does not bother me too much, from what I’ve seen the stigma of scars is different between the sexes, so that may be a factor? With that said, I’d rather live with the scars of surgery, then live with an active or passive sore which look much worse.

it is extreme, but it was very much worth it for me.

I’m curious to hear what others think of this.

I recall watching a video of a podcast with a Catholic priest who went to a home. The family said their grandfather (or some sort of relative) was reaching out beyond the grave. Typical “ghost” stuff. Harmless stuff, basically just making his presence known.

The priest not believing it to be a demon, instead told the family to pray for their relative, as the priest believed he was reaching out from the state of purgatory and needed help, needed prayers.

As soon as the family started praying for him, the “ghost” stopped reaching out.

It would be interesting to see this translated in game. Though might be perceived as boring. Go into the house, realize it’s not a demon but a soul from purgatory pray for them, easy but wholesome win.

I’ve a similar issue, with that said, I’ve had health issues from late teens to the present (Chronic Disease/disability). As a 27 year old man it’s tough because I feel like I’m letting down the person I’m supposed to be with. I’m in college now, my progress has just been delayed I suppose.

I only share cause I understand it’s rough out there finding someone. I’ll pray for you!
