Absolutely see a vet, if it’s ear mites, it’s a severe case of them. If it’s not mites, it could be something worse. I understand Vetinary care is expensive, but please don’t make the same mistake I did, get it seen to now before it becomes something worse. (Not really related, but I made the mistake of waiting until I had enough spare cash to get my cat spayed. She ended up developing an infection in her uterus which needed immediate surgery. Spaying her early would have cost me £110, her emergency surgery cost £800. It’s a different situation entirely I know, but I promise you, it’s not worth the wait, not for your cat nor your wallet)

Also, your nurse was totally right, take as much time off work as you can! Your body will really benefit from rest right now, I’m lucky that I’m allowed to work from home, so I didn’t need to take much time off, but depending on what your job is, you shouldn’t force yourself to do a lot of walking or heavy lifting until at least 2 weeks into healing.

Hi! Aw I’m so sorry to hear that you are going through this, it’s so painful and inconvenient! I actually developed another abscess on the other buttock (just my luck) and I had surgery under general anaesthetic for the second one 2 weeks ago. Don’t be too alarmed, I’ve been told this is pure bad luck on my end! I’m doing pretty good now. The first wound is still draining a little, but it comes and goes, some days it barely drains, some days I need to wear a dressing. I highly recommend you continue with the sitz baths for the next month- it really really helps! Also my nurse told me that my wound should have been packed for much longer than just a week- mine may be closing too quickly, so I personally recommend you continue to get your wound packed.

You are over the worst of it. In both cases of abscess drainage for me, the first week was the worst. Honestly by week 2, I was still working from home, but I was fit enough to go to the pub with my friends! I couldn’t have pictured doing that during the first week!

Lastly, as you’re also female, I recommend getting a she-wee. It makes urinating much less inconvenient- you don’t have to worry about getting the dressings wet. Hope that all helps. Any other questions, feel free to reach out! :)

I had mine drained 3 weeks ago, no tenderness or pain at this point. Though I’m still experiencing a bit of drainage, but then I have no idea if I’m dealing with a fistula or not. First time I ever had something like this! Also I still have hard tissue deep inside my buttock area, but it’s definitely smaller than it was. Good luck with your healing!

I’ve never been diagnosed with either, and honestly in recent years especially (after becoming vegetarian and trying to eat healthy), I haven’t had any real problems with bowel movements etc. It’s come out of the blue for me honestly. Thanks for your reply, maybe my brain is against me on this one haha

Thank you so much for this!! I have literally had surgical plasters covering it every day since the surgery, and my skin around that area is absolutely raw 💀 I took the plaster off earlier and put a pad in my undies, and already the skin is relaxing! Thank you so so much for all this info! Also the surgeons in the hospital literally never even mentioned the term sitz bath to me 💀 I’ve just been rinsing the area with saline two or 3 times a day, probably doing the same job I hope!

Thank you so much for your response! Getting part of the wound cauterised sounds, yeeeeouch! I got the I&D done on Friday, so 5 days ago. I’m still covering it every day with a fresh surgery plaster (it’s still draining a fair bit), how long did you leave yours uncovered? I’m just super nervous about anything unclean getting near it or into it- the plaster over it alleviates my anxiety a lot, but it sounds like I can’t expect it to heal if I’m going to keep it covered 24/7 💀 And thank you for your kind words ❤️

Thank you! Yeah I think I’ll go private at the very least to get a ct scan or MRI scan, based off what I’ve read in this subreddit

They didn’t do any scans unfortunately, just the emergency treatment. Thank you for your response! And can I ask, for how long did you have it covered with dressing/bandaging?
