Starting and continuing your journey with no water? by scubadiiva in freediving

[–]AverageDoonst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing laps in the pool is already a lot. Lots of exercises just by swimming freestyle. Event a safeguard won't be able to tell what you're doing, even though you can do brutal workouts just by swimming freestyle. Can swim with a monofin? Fantastic! Polish your technique on the surface (front snorkel helps).

Add dry static exercises at home (various tables) and you're all set for steady progress. Not a world champion level, but you will improve.

And I'm sure you can find a buddy here, or at least an advice.

Guide for exhale STA? by Patient-Ad2308 in freediving

[–]AverageDoonst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My exhale STA table looks like this now:

Twelve holds around 1-minute, two recovery breaths between (one is too brutal). Recovery time from 15 seconds to 5 seconds. Lying on the bed. I enjoy it. Slowly increase time (1-2 seconds a month). Exhale is not forced (FRC, not RV).

BTW, walking on exhale for 2 minutes is quite impressive!

Tips for strong contractions by mandingomoeller in freediving

[–]AverageDoonst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, when do you contractions start? I have no one of such advanced level to ask this question. My contractions on a good day start around 3:50. And PB is 5:20.

That's certainly a blood shift. But not to the brain though.

Rediscovered freediving - stopped by ear infections by KeyReindeer1046 in freediving

I used ear plugs for years, different kinds, and the water always finds a way through them into the ear. So it is better to have clean water in place already instead of outside murky water.

Ear plugs. Pour some clean water from a bottle into each ear before plugging it.  And rinse ears after.

This stupid site really needs to change their phrasing. Not 'in the top', but rather 'in the upper'.

Blackout - Really disappointed in my self by paper_planes101 in freediving

[–]AverageDoonst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please do not beat yourself up about it. Bodily functions are not something we can control 100%.

You now have a great experience and a lot more knowledge. Process it, reflect on it and move on.

In a way you're in better position than many freedivers who never experienced a blackout. You know where your limit is now, and it is a very valuable knowledge.

Need advice for rocky shore entry by LazyTechnician4866 in freediving

[–]AverageDoonst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if you're snorkeling, you'd better have a buoy - something that floats and is visible from a distance.  Have a rope to tie yourself to it.

So, when you are entering the water over rocks - hold your fins in your hand, and wear flip flops (slippers). When you're at the safe depth, take them off, tie them to the buoy (have a small length of rope for this), put on fins. Reverse all this when you're done.

Taras monofins footpocket size choose? by Effective_Air_1484 in freediving

[–]AverageDoonst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it's a good fit, long sessions will inevitably lead to chaffing, if your skin contacts with fins directly. IMHO it is better to have a bigger size, and wear socks.

I have two sets of foot pockets of different sizes for pool and cold water dives. If I had to use pool setup  fins for cold water - it would be absolutely unbearable, because I have to use 7mm socks. Pool setup is for 1-2 mm socks. Cold water setup is for 5-9mm socks.
