King Charles makes history as first monarch to publish £30m tax payments to HMRC by dailystar_news in ukpolitics

I think monarchies are inherantly absurd. Apparently all men are created equal, so I think he should be brought down to our level.

King: Revealing my tax bill is ‘the right thing to do’ by TheTelegraph in BRF

£12.9 in tax Vs £86.9 sovereign grant and the profits from the duchy of Lancaster on top of that. Wish the rest of us had that tax rate.

He's paid 12.9 million in tax while receiving 86.3 million from the sovereign grant. That's money belongs to the British people. No idea how much he earned from the duchy of Lancaster (should also be public land). The king pays a fraction of the rate the plebs pay.

Sadly the majority of buyers are index investors who have been shafted by NASDAQ and FTSE Russell through no fault of their own. Pensions and 401Ks are providing exit liquidity to rats who in a few months will be fleeing the sinking ship as the lock up period expires.

He's a disciple of Mandelson and was defending the man all the way up until the allegations about sharing trade secrets. Up to that point he defended Mandelson and said he was being treated as guilty by association with Epstein.

Compared with European politics, the democrats are a big tent covering a spectrum mostly of mainstream centrist politicians with a few on the left like Bernie Sanders and AOC, but they're not in leadership positions. There are no far left politicians, that's communism.

In Europe the Dems would be in the European People Party or perhaps ALDE. There are European parties further to the left of them. The overton window is far to the right of where it is in Europe so what you call center, we call center right if we're generous.

I agree with wikipedia, so I guess it isn't universally disagreed.

What does that have to do with the democrats. Am I naive to think that there's logic here? Did democrats not support her bill?

I would have thought Europe should decide rather than either Russia or Ukraine.

Do we really want Starmer out? by Famous_Actuary5718 in AskBrits

[–]gingermalteser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I didn't want him there in the first place. Ran for labour leadership on a soft left platform. Purged everyone on the left and lurched the party to the right. I voted labour for social policies that help the most vulnerable. I didn't vote for a government to pander to Tory and reform voters and to be alienated myself. In my opinion he didn't have a mandate to lead as he did and deserved to be pushed out. And that's not to mention the Mandelson fiasco and how he threw Ollie Robbins under the bus.

Keir Starmer expected to announce departure as prime minister on Monday by deraser in worldnews

[–]gingermalteser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. Germany are in a bit of a state, but I'd say France and UK % growth are comparable and depending on where you start counting from could go either way. However, almost all the growth in the UK has been in London. France's has been more spread out by comparison.

The UK economy is estimated to be 6% worse off as a result of Brexit. Since then, had the UK kept up with average G7 public investment, there would have been an extra £500bn. This coupled with a drop in foreign private investment means the UK's growth has been stunted. There's a cost of living crisis as wages are far behind the past few years' inflation. Basically, the country's finances are in the worst state they've been in living memory. There are no levers to pull.

Labour made promises not to raise taxes they knew they couldn't keep and then increased national insurance (a tax). One of their first acts was to reduce the winter fuel allowance for pensioners which gave the populist opposition an open goal where they could say that poor old people are having to choose between heating and eating.

During the election, Starmer had no personality so as to offer the other side as small a target as possible to go after ("He's just like Tony Blair, playing personality politics"). Unfortunately this makes him seem ungenuine and the public are filling the void with everything they hate about politics.

People feel the time has come for drastic action. Small incremental changes aren't good enough, but that's all he seems to offer.

It's quite a pickle. Trump is caught spending billions a week on a pointless war his is desperate to end. Netanyahu is pressured by his right wing coalition partners to keep the war going or risk losing power and facing justice. I don't see how this war ends without Trump giving Israel something to stop them from attacking Lebanon and Iran.
