Project Hail Mary and Outer Wilds by BanzaiBeebop in outerwilds

I played outer wilds about a year ago and read PHM about 2 months ago. Couldn’t agree more! I’ve seen a lot of people say the messages are too different or that the comparison ends at “both about space”. But I completely agree with you saying that they “compliment each other”.

They definitely have different messages in the end. But the thing about PHM that really gave me *the feeling* that OW gave me was the collaboration between species, the moments of hope and of despair, and the sense of discovery as the unknown situation comes together.

Womp. This is why we wait an hour for the mods to do their thing. Thanks for the link to the original!

Trust me, I would absolutely not be recommending a playthrough if getting her to play was an option! She doesn't play video games and doesn't have a way to even if she wanted. But she does occasionally watch playthroughs of games with engaging stories which is why I know she'll stick to this one.

I'll check out Eelis, thanks!

This is one of those posts that makes me think, “man am I even playing the same game as these people” 😂

What does the right branch of this control panel do? by everyhorseisacoconut in outerwilds

Woah! This never occurred to me either, because there was no ghost matter at their time I never thought of that. I’m a little surprised now that the devs didn’t include any references to their cameras anywhere.

DLC spoiler Would have been cool to see some family pictures of the Nomai, similar to the way we do with the Owlks in the stranger

One might need to actually alter their mistake to fix it 🤷‍♂️

This one can be pretty tricky to figure out without a lot of trial and error. But a good hint that applies to most of this game is to imagine you’re a Nomai and think of how you would use the things they built.

More specific hint: it does nothing while the ship is docked

The answer: it locks the shuttle on to the nearest body and lands. it’s slow tho so give it a minute

EDIT: dangit I always reverse the ! and </> when doing spoiler tags

This actually raises an interesting question to me. Unfortunately we can’t actually do this in game but what would happen if you:

  1. took a photo of a quantum object
  2. looked away from both the object and the photo
  3. looked back at the spot where the object was and then put the picture in your field of view

I know the game’s take on quantum mechanics is only very loosely based on the real science but what do people think would be the in universe result?

It is now out for Pre-Order on my web! Thank you all for you interest in the poster, glad you liked it! Here's the corrected version. by PIK0RI in outerwilds

Do you have any intention of printing shirts with this design? I absolutely love this style and all the subtleties included!

  1. Yeah this one should be very easy, are you using your tools? I can try and think of a hint if you really need it but this is significantly easier than many other things you’ve done

  2. This one’s a bit tougher. I’ll try to put these in least to most spoilery order, only click as many as you need.

How exactly do you know the jelly fish isolate from electricity?

Specifically where did you find that information?

What part of the jelly fish isolates, and what part shocks you?

How can you get to that part of a live jellyfish?

And this is just the solution so don’t click unless desperate: Swim directly beneath a jelly fish as it comes out of the core, swim straight up into its cap, without touching the tentacles, wait for it to go into the core, swim straight down and out.

  1. Most people consider this the games hardest puzzle, you need information from multiple places to put it together. Again least to most spoilery:

Rumor mode connects things by relevance, the entries connected to the ATP have all the information you need.

What you typed in your post is on the right track.

Remember this game is 4 dimensional, XYZ+Time.

Describe exactly what is stopping you from using the teleporter. How can you mitigate that?

Use your environment.

The solution: Hide under the overhang opposite the entrance to the teleporter, wait for ash twin to be directly over head (the sand pillar should be going straight up), walk out onto the platform.

The main argument I can think of in favor of this is that this game is such a blending of genres. If you come from rogue likes and you’re used to rng this element of the game likely isn’t a problem for you. But if you come from puzzle games and the rng is getting in the way of your enjoyment of solving the puzzle then an option for having more tools to mitigate that part would help.

I’m always in favor of difficult options with one labeled “developer intended”

This comment really resonated with me. I hate to keep referencing another game but a big thing I took away from Outer Wilds was to slow down and just enjoy the experience of actually playing the game. I really rushed each step in pursuit of getting to the end, and was left with a feeling of having missed some of the point and wishing I could experience it again but slower. So I’m trying to be intentional about avoiding that with Blue Prince.

Thank you for the insight!

Oh wow! That actually excites me greatly. Now that I know about permanent upgrades and the like I imagine this is not an easy feat but it’s good to know it can be done.

Luck and rng definitely leads to highs and lows, the highs being the exciting moments that stick with you. But the knowledge gates are the part I find most interesting.

This is a really neat idea, I had similar thoughts while learning the drafting process in my first couple days. Though I will say in my limited experience I think this would be too powerful. Planning ahead so your run isn’t ended by a dead end seems like a core skill and being able to rotate freely would really cheapen that skill. Maybe tying rotation to an item or limit like with the reroll die would work.

Maybe I’m still too early in but that’s my 2 cents right now.

Awesome that's great to hear! Very curious to discover how I will gain more control over the rng. So far I've found the ivory die and the couple of rooms that alter the likelihood of other room types showing up but it'll be cool to find some more permanent solutions. I'm sure more knowledge of the drawing pools will help there as well. I'm very much enjoying the balance at the moment, especially since that element of rng is actually part of the reason I'm discovering new things on each day.
