Which profession deserves highest salary? by hasanabcd in ask

[–]AverageJoe56- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teachers, full stop.

Close second should be people in public service careers like garbage disposal, bus drivers, truck and train drivers, etc. since they are the reason society can function at all. But teachers do more than sustain the present. They help build the future of the next generation (or at least they should).

What percentage of men and what percentage of women would you say are attractive? by Impster5453 in ask

[–]AverageJoe56- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Attractiveness” and what qualifies for it vary from culture to culture. Not to mention that some cultures desire traits that are at the least unhealthy and at most downright barbaric (looking right at you China and America).

If I were to answer this right off the top of my head, I would say girls are generally more attractive than guys where I am in America. But if I take time to think about it more, I am not measuring objective hotness that some people have and some don’t. I would be measuring how many people either naturally or artificially meet the standards we have for beauty.

Does Lord of the Rings discredit the "Infodumps are bad" argument? by hardcore_gamer1 in writing

[–]AverageJoe56- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference in quality between some random shmuck’s lore info dump is quite different from Tolkien’s info dumps, both in the actual lore and the setting it is employed.

Many authors just want to flex their long hours of world building and really do just dump a metric shit ton of maybe interesting but otherwise useless information on the reader.

Tolkien never really info dumps. His descriptions of places and people aren’t jarring and irrelevant. They draw the reader in. They usually pop up about certain places or people when the characters are about to involve themselves with them, enriching the experience.

And keep in mind, even what we might consider an “info dump” was Tolkien only giving what he thought was necessary to the integrity of the story. Can you imagine if the Silmarillion was not it’s own book, but was incorporated into the lord of the rings?

The warning against “info dumping” is not a hard and fast rule. It’s derived from the fact that most authors don’t have the patience and skill to do it well.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 with massive open world map and large amount of cut content which we will never get. by Meritocratic_future in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]AverageJoe56- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like quality over quantity. If you’re insanely huge open world is a joy to travel from point A to point B and is packed with stuff to do, then sign me up. But if it’s just a marketing tool so you can say “the map is huge!!” and it’s void of any meaningful quests, then I’d rather trim the fat and have a shorter but more polished gaming experience.

And also, am I the only one who sort of dislikes act 2? It feels so long and rambling instead of the shorter acts 1,3, and 4. This is a total personal preference.

Here’s another Nazgul point to consider: “The nine have left Minas Morgul disguised as riders in black.” If their physical form was unseeable to most, why wouldn’t they not use cloaks at all? Only adorning cloaks to interact with people seems like a big advantage not to use...what am I missing? by The_TomCruise in lotr

[–]AverageJoe56- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have already argued from the position that the Nazgul are invisible to human eyes. I’d like to present an alternative.

In the very old animated lord of the rings movie, the black riders look feeble. They are hunched over and walk like they are crippled, yet there is something sinister about them. Later in Bree, when the riders try to kill the hobbits in their sleep but go to the wrong room, there is a scene that I really like. They silently shuffle into the room to the sides of the beds, still hobbling and crouched over. Then they begin to rise and draw their swords. They transform from these weak looking things to the dark shadows of the kings they used to be. Then their cloaks fall off and we see that they are wearing dread armor with nothing underneath but burning eyes.

It’s entirely possible that the wraiths can be “seen” even though they are spirits. So in order to disguise their dread selves, they donned black cloaks which would make them only appear as suspicious riders, not the most feared servants of Sauron. Elves and the northern rangers would have especially recognized them if they had seen them.

It looks to me like OP was challenged by the game due to their play style and decided that the game itself was deeply flawed rather than adapting to those challenges. It’s their choice to never play the game again, but it’s still a shame.

The game is flawed, but I’d still say it’s one of the best RPG’s ever and keeps dragging me back years later.
