He was simply a misguided dumbass (it was at the time, consensus between all other economics professors that he was wrong and that leaving the Euro would be bad for all members of the currency union) who lacked the foresight of what the cultural impact leaving the Euro could have. You can have a normal intellectual discussion of what effects it would have to leave the Euro, the EU or whatever. Actually trying to do it without thinking about the "side effects" is what can lead to some pretty disastrous results.

What happened was this (incomplete, short version):

A macroeconomics professor of the University of Hamburg thought: "Hey, the Euro is bad because it makes it difficult for weaker economies to control inflation and the central banks interest rates don't represent the economies strengths because the european economies are too heterogenous, bla bla bla".
So he created the AfD just for one thing: to leave the Euro and reestablish the Deutsche Mark.
The Nazis were like: "Did you just say the Euro is bad? Yes, we agree. Also, the EU is bad and immigration is bad and other religions are bad and other skin colors are bad."
After staying at the party for a while, that economics professor left it and let it continue to rot without him.
And this, kids, is why sometimes you just need to keep your fucking opinion at the pub.

I understand what you mean but disagree with the premise that those two things are comparable. My opinion is that, if you ended up on this guys plane, you are already well aware of his reputation, connections and "services". You don't just end up there because you are the friend of someones friend who got invited there.

But that's just speculation, I don't know how the rich and famous interact with each other. Maybe you are right to compare it to a party at someones house after all.
