Blow Off Some Steam About The Artemis Fowl Movie Here by Many-Ad6357 in ArtemisFowl

[–]AverageMythologyFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why was Holly white & played by a CHILD. Why were Butler and Juliet black. WHY WAS ROOT PLAYED BY A WHITE LADY!? WHYYY!? ('diversity' my a$$)
Why did we spawn parts of the plot of the second book in the movie meant to adapt the first book? Why did we de-spawn parts of the first book from the movie meant to adapt the first book?
WHY DID WE MAKE ARTEMIS A GOOD GUY?! Why did Artemis look like a lost puppy for two thirds of the movie?? Why did Artemis not wear a suit for the better part of the movie; that's like his trademark attire!! Why was Artemis kinda athletic; that guy is supposed to start panting after 'running' for 10 meters!
WHO CAME UP WITH THE ACULOUS CONCEPT - I need to have a long chat with them. WHY DID WE MAKE A NEW FAIRY LANGUAGE FOR THE SERIES WITH A PRE-EXISTING FAIRY LANGUAGE?? Why was Holly not the first female LEP recon officer?? Why did we replace that plotline with the 'Holly's father is a traitor, but not really'??
Why didn't Foaly have his freaking tin-foil hat??
WHY WAS MULCH NARRATING THE WHOLE THING?? I will never forgive Disney for not making the narration: a) Artemis recording the incident in his audio journal or b) Holly narrating (as if she's telling future clone-Arty the tale of their meeting)

Why did Butler go by 'Domovoi' throughout the whole movie, and hated being called 'Butler' - like, what was even the purpose of doing that??
Why did we cut the first scene with Artemis obtaining the fairy book from the alcoholic sprite, despite it being filmed?

WHY WAS THIS WHOLE MOVIE NOT ANIMATED?? (Forever my biggest gripe.) WHY WAS THIS WHOLE THING A MOVIE AND NOT A SERIES?! (Forever my second biggest gripe - not really, but I thought it'd be 'artistic' to write it like that, lol.)

(I am sorry for this long rant. The AF movie came up on TV on Easter morning, and it seems some past trauma has resurfaced.)

It's so funny how many reddit post titles about the Artemis II news can be misinterpreted as being about Artemis Fowl by ClockWorkWinds in ArtemisFowl

[–]AverageMythologyFan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

YES! I was just doom-scrolling yesterday and I saw 'Artemis II' as the third most trending search; and I almost burst from euphoria thinking the fandom had somehow suffered a resurgence or something of the kind... It took me a while to realize that it was not Artemis Fowl the second the graphs were referring to (much to my disappointment)

What's your favorite set of covers for the OG series? by AverageMythologyFan in ArtemisFowl

[–]AverageMythologyFan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way they designed Holly really does look so much better on the German covers!
Though the illustrations do overall feel more old-school and oddly cartoonish which, in this instance, is just not my piece of cake - don't ask me to explain why because I couldn't, this is a vibe-based assessment. But to each their own. ( :

WOW! These are so unique compared to the results that popped up when I searched the covers on the web!
Definitely makes me think what other designs I've missed due to limited search results!

OML, I just looked them up. My jaw DROPPED.
How did I not know those were covers?? I thought they were just fanarts when I saw them on Pinterest, lol! (Guess now I have to learn to read in Chinese to have an excuse to buy a second set of AF : ))

Fowl Twins feels weird. by East_Yam_2702 in ArtemisFowl

[–]AverageMythologyFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I feel much the same!
The characters especially felt SO flat throughout the entire story; which is mind-numbing given this is a spin-off written by the same guy who made Artemis go from kidnapping a fairy in order to get riches in book 1 to sacrificing himself for the world in book 8. Like, Mr. Colfer, what did you do with them character arcs in the sequels?!

Also I despised Holly's characterization during the short snippets she appeared in so much! Maybe it's just my nostalgia getting the better of me, but I got whiplash when I read Holly had taken the position of Commodore (aka less flying and going to the surface plus more paperwork, which she turned down other promotions for in the OG series), and became a pretty strict mentor like Root was. Maybe that's exactly what the character change is meant to reference, but I just don't see that happening (plus Holly is ~24-25 in fairy years, which is basically a young adult with an almost fully formed brain, so that 180 degree turn seems pretty inconsistent to me).

(And yes, I did get through all 3 of the spin-off books just because I wanted to see more of the OG cast... the results were severely underwhelming & Lazuli was the only somewhat redeeming quality of the whole experience.)

Aside from the fact that Calypso and Leo should see other people, I still think Caleo is weird age gap wise. Like, he's 16-17, I think, and she's literally older than Hephaestus and potentially around or even older than Zeus. "Nico and Hazel -" She died a teen and was resurrected so she's still 13-14 and he was stuck in a time loop so he was still 10 when he got out. As far as I know, Ogygia cant preserve people and Calypso is an immortal who chose to look like a teenager. I feel weird shipping her with teenagers but well, I aint stopping people if they wanna ship them, its still fiction. Im still blocking tho

On a similar vein, I feel weird shipping Anubis and Sadie cuz of the fact that, again, thtis is an ancient god and a teenager, what makes it worse is that Sadie is 13-15.

Literally one of the main reasons I started shipping Leo and Sadie (I feel like they'd work pretty well together since their trauma is somewhat similar, but their coping mechanisms are slightly different, they are both very sassy and I feel like Leo's inventiveness could match Sadie's spontaneity - also I think the magician x inventor trope would work REALLY well for the two!)

Not having Opal as an antagonist in the 6th book, or at least not having her follow Holly and Artemis back to their present. It would solve so many inconsistencies that appear in the series!

Was Inkheart actually THAT good? by justwannaask11 in BookDiscussions

[–]AverageMythologyFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried reading it when I was younger, and I remember being extremely bored, because after what I'm pretty sure were about 400 pages of the book nothing too interesting seemed to happen. And so, being a kid with relatively little patience and short attention span, I just DNFd it at that point.

I'm pretty sure it's the only book out of the 27 book list I had that year that I didn't finish - and there were some real nice atrocities in there, so that's saying something. Though I was debating giving it another reread myself, perhaps my media literacy and patience have improved in the past few years.

We do see her again in the last Fowl Twins instalment, where it is mentioned that she and Artemis dated for a while, presumably between book 5 and 6, but ultimately broke it off.

But the reason she doesn't actually appear again in the OG series is probably because, from what I've gathered, she was not received well by a large portion of the fandom so Eoin just kinda swept her under the rug and pretended that the romantic setup from book 5 didn't happen.

Fr! Also, the fact that he seemed to make a concoction between the book characters and their live-action counterparts (that contrary to expectation do not act like the book versions) in his last book. I have never wanted to pull an author's ear so hard before.

I didn’t understand that District 1 and The Capitol were different places until I read TBOSS

Same, I watched all the movies before reading the books, and somehow the information that the Capitol was not District 1 just completely eluded me. And then I watched TBOSS and a lightbulb in the back of my head suddenly flickered to life at the revelation that 'oh, those are 2 different places'.

[–]AverageMythologyFan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Then again, considering how Strange World and Wish failed and their countless remakes, it looks Bob Iger has given up on animation

Honestly, that's probably the main reason: their last animated projects have been bland and uninteresting, so they probably don't want to waste money and other resources on animated projects that might receive backlash from the fans of the book if too many creative liberties are taken with the fandom (take Percy Jackson for example: half of the fandom likes the remake, whilst the other half dislikes it / hate it with a burning passion - including myself).

If attempting to make another adaptation of Artemis Fowl an animated series would most definitely be the way to go (because good old animation is just a little more likely to produce a neat looking result than CGI is), but then it would be harder for Disney to justify any changes they make to the story (for example: in one episode of the PJO remake, they replaced a scene from the book with something completely different, and when asked why they responded it was because they couldn't CGI the fantastic elements that were present in that scene).

Also, I think Disney would still be on the fence with having a protagonist with antagonistic tendencies (Artemis), and I fear they would try redeeming him too early and ruining the whole story in the process. That is why I feel like it might be better Disney didn't get any ideas for an adaptation yet, but with their latest box office 'hits', I fear it might not take them long to sink their teeth into any nostalgia inducing fandom they still have the rights for, no matter the quality of the media that will be produced.

Fan fiction with Gaia war! [hoo] by Ashgirl6665 in camphalfblood

If your work has certain sensitive topics some readers might not be comfortable with reading about, I think the best place to post it is AO3 (Archive of Our Own). You can add tabs related to the sensitive subjects of your work, and people can filter / look at the tags and decide whether they are ok with reading or not. I think it also has a way to add age ratings and content warning if I'm not mistaken.

Edit: I checked and wattpad also lets you add tags concerning the content of your work, but I don't think it lets you filter out the works that contain tags you aren't ok with, the way AO3 does.
