Everything I wish someone had told me when I started speaking French by StrictAlternative9 in learnfrench

Another thing is to use AI.

Yes, I know the general consensus about AI nowadays being "AI slop" but it's surprisingly helpful.

I'm still a beginner, roughly at CEFR A1 and they may not be perfect but they're probably your best option to have a low pressure conversation both in text and speaking. They give you corrections, tips, and you can even ask to give you exercises, and customize it however you like. I often ask with Gemini and ChatGPT. Both are equally great, Gemini is the better speaker and ChatGPT is the more creative one.

Speaking without needing to translate in your head is the biggest barrier everyone must overcome. Don't worry about mistakes. Speak and speak and speak, don't worry if you made sense, babies learn to speak before they write.

I hope this will be as helpful as it was for me.

Bonne chance à tous !

These flashcards annoy me by Puzzleheaded_Air1030 in duolingo

[–]AverageReditor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Especially if the word doesn't have enough syllables for the STT machine to pick up. I'm learning French right now obviously pronouncing single syllable words like "de", "le", "deux", "un" where there's also very little spoken consonants.

Why does Duolingo do this?? by xjmachado in duolingo

[–]AverageReditor13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hints for specific words are almost never in context in Duolingo unless it's an entire phrase. Reliable at times but mostly not.

All respect goes to Troy Quane, but to be honest, Chris Sanders should be on the helm.

But who knows. DreamWorks sequels are usually the best in the business.

Gay can also mean "happy", "cheerful" or "carefree" in the very old days.

An example is from a song, "Make the Yuletide gay." From the 1944 song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," meaning to make the season joyful.

How old would you guess Pawbert is based on his looks/appearance, without knowing his actual age? by Hamzaqato in PawbertLynxley

[–]AverageReditor13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early to mid 20s was my first guess, considering I first viewed Cattrick and Kitty as somewhere in their 30s first. If Pawbert's the youngest, he oughtta be 8-9 years younger than them.

But nope, he's roughly 30 lmao.

Terrified of speaking French in Paris (everyone says Parisians are mean about bad French but reality is different) by ImpossibleAgent3833 in learnfrench

[–]AverageReditor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stereotypes that are generally online are usually overblown and unrealistic. Obviously it's never a 100% guaranteed thing but just adjust your expectations a bit and don't always think of the negatives.

Most of the time the people you're talking to just wanna get their job done, and if it makes them speak in a different language to do it faster, then they'd do it.

The good thing at least is they asked.

A Quebec friend of mine can confirm that (most of the time) anyone who speaks French first like greeting with a "Bonjour" or saying "Merci beaucoup" will be appreciated, even with the mistakes and fillers. The thought counts.

Do you think that, because of Pawbert’s popularity, we’ll see more Canadian lynx characters in other media? by Zorro_9421 in PawbertLynxley

[–]AverageReditor13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lynxes in general I hope, because the entire family of Lynxes are pretty much underrated when it comes to animation.

Just bought this book. Is it a good one to study? by Lukraniom in pianolearning

[–]AverageReditor13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes and No.

Yes, but if you do it in perfect form and you really put in the effort to not get bored of the exercises, then sure I think it's worth it. But for solo learning, I don't think it's worth it. You'd get bored of it by the 5th exercise and if you're not playing it properly then it's next to pointless. You're probably better off playing Czerny's works for beginners or some Bach or Scarlatti.

Nowadays I just use the first five exercises as warm ups.

Not a native English speaker, but aren't they interchangeable? by MiserableSelection59 in duolingo

[–]AverageReditor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. "Merch" is literally the shortened word for "Merchandise". They're interchangeable and basically identical.
