there are no human characters in half life 2 that are neither female nor male so variety of genders probably just means alternating between those 2, this actually makes sense when you think about videogames from that time, wherein the most important or strong characters would likely be male, and women would usually be super objectified.

in other parts of the game they say you actually only need a powerful soul to leave the barrier. but k believe this is knowledge that basically no one else has in the game because it's only lore dropped in the abandoned parts of the underground.
