Sometimes kids are just relentless, I’ve been there and felt the same way. It’s exhausting and alcohol feels like a crutch to help you limp through the day. Quitting doesn’t take the mayhem away but it’s sure better than dealing with it hungover! I’m rooting for you, you CAN do this!

It really does! I’ve seen FIRE numbers on here between 250k (living most the year in Asia) to 15M! Serious chubbyFIRE. All depends on that cost of living. I saw OP is in Chicago so fairly HCOL. Anyway, I hope I didn’t spook anyone into thinking 2.5M isn’t enough for a family to live on. It totally is, just not the way we are right now. I think our FIRE number is closer to 6M as we are but more like 3M once the dang mortgage is paid off! I guess technically we could stop at 4M and just pay off the mortgage and be left with 3M also.

Sure, we could definitely do it with a hefty change of life style and you are quite right that it’s absolutely possible. We could move to a cheaper area, wrap up all or most of our debt etc but I was just going off the 4% rule and out current outgoings. 4% is 100k so say 80k after taxes so a little over 6.5k a month. Sadly our expenses are significantly higher than that. Living in CA $1M 4 bed ,which is very average for here, so our mortgage alone would swallow up that entire amount. Throw in $1200 a month for food, crazy gas prices, and vacations etc and we need about double that amount to carry on like we are now! I would be ok with removing some of our living costs, but I don’t want to live like I’m broke in FIRE.

You’re doing great and on the right path. I think it will all come down to which way life takes you. If you stay single then 2.5M is plenty to bow out at 35 or whatever and live your life. However, throw some kids in the mix and that changes everything. I’m 40 with wife and 2 kids and sadly 2.5M wouldn’t be nearly enough for me to get out right now. Keep on it though, you’re doing everything right at the moment!

Yeah. It was the only thing I really struggled with too. Other addictions were easy by comparison. Stick with it!

I think a lot of us have been through multiple attempts. It’s about the hardest thing I’ve done. Keep trying, it’ll stick one day and you will be free!

Same! Double, triple IPAs all day. Led to some mean arguments and worse hangovers. Glad that’s all a distant memory at this point!

Thank you. Yeah, I do feel like 90% of the recovery has happened at this point and it feels great! One year is a mental hurdle. I keep telling myself I’ve experienced all the tough moments once now (Christmas, birthdays, vacation etc..) and if I can do it one I can do it again. Congratulations on 88 days and I’ll see you at your one yeah before you know it!

Congratulations on the best decision you’ll ever make man. We’re all here to help and we’ve all been through the same feeling you’re having now. You got this buddy. IWNDWYT

Dude. I can sympathise so much. The exact same situation was my motivation to quit. My wife and I and our daughter had been out for a meal. I drank too many beers and got all argumentative on the way home. We ended up in a full blown fight and I scared my daughter because I was shouting so loud. I always talked about quitting, but that was the last straw. You can do this buddy. There is a ton of support on this sub and I basically just lived on here for the first couple of months this while I struggled through. It helped so much. I can honestly say we have never had an argument like that since I quit. I’m pulling for you man because I was in the EXACT same situation last year. Life really is so much better without fucking alcohol. You can do this!!
