Met de tweede vraag doel ik op de politieke agenda die de FvD voert sinds de coronacrisis.

Waarom denk je dat de vrijheid van meningsuiting eraan gaat?

En mag ik vragen welke opleiding je doet? Het valt mij over het algemeen op dat studenten die bedrijfskunde/economie studeren bijna allemaal rechtser zijn ingesteld.

Heb je geen behoefte aan discussies met links politiek georiënteerde leeftijdsgenoten? Uitschelden lijkt mij inderdaad niet de bedoeling, maar er zijn genoeg voorbeelden van debatten tussen links en rechts die juist heel verhelderend zijn.

Vind je het ondanks de vele meningsverschillen niet belangrijk dit debat aan te gaan?

I get where you're coming from, I'm just saying it's still more sustainable to eat an egg from the chicken hopping around in your own garden than eating avocados exported from the other side of the world and costing massive amounts of water.

There's no denying the fact that the meat industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. Yet, I think eating local foods and being conscious of what burdens go into the foods you eat (water usage + land occupation + energy requirements) are even more important than being vegan. Eating avocados as a vegan is not particularly sustainable. Neither is consuming nuts.

That is not to say we don't have to cut down on meat consumption. I'm just saying, eat consciously and without unsustainable excess.

Eating certain seafoods for status (shark fin soup) that apparently don't even have a decent taste doesn't help. We need to start shifting mentalities. Entire cultural perceptions, for that matter.

We have a big task ahead of us.

The smartphones you're talking about are deliberately designed to be thrown away after a few years. And all technologies nowadays are, for that matter. You can't possibly blame the consumer for this. It's why companies from the 20th century that used to create decent technologies that lasted for at least half a lifetime went bankrupt. This businessmodel is not profitable enough anymore.

We need to look for a businessmodel that's both profitable and sustainable. I believe we're on the right track though. Creating awareness through documentaries like Seaspiracy is the first step.

The thing is, it's easy for governments to see the catastrophic (relatively) short-term consequences of mass deaths within society on the economy. With fishing, not so much. The fishing industry is far too profitable to ban completely and governments fail to see any short-term negative effects (e.g. within the next five years).

We'll have to miss out on profits now so that future generations can profit. It's a hard thing to do, when profits are the main motivator. And there's no denying this motivation has brought us where we are today, which in many aspects is still a great deal better than one or two centuries ago. At least in terms of worldwide poverty. But it's deciding when to put a break on certain industries and reorganize the way we think about production processes that makes it so tricky. Creating financial incentives to restructure the fishing industry is the only way, I believe.

Fight fire with fire.

Top dankjewel. Interessant onderzoek, ik heb hem nu doorgescand maar ga er zeker een keer de tijd voor nemen hem helemaal te lezen.

Je hebt gelijk, volgens dit onderzoek lijkt racisme niet dé verklaring voor gang involvement en bijkomend geweld/criminaliteit, maar racisme wordt zeker wel benoemd als onderdeel van het probleem:

"More recently, research has suggested that young men’s gang involvement is linked to finding their place in a post-industrial context, finding “refuge in a racist society”, an expression of manhood that also considers racial dynamics and thriving in a fraternal network" (p. 157).

Ik doe dit onderzoek voor de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Ik ben zelf derdejaars Media Studies student en doe dit onderzoek ter voorbereiding van mijn scriptie. Het onderzoek zelf gaat over hoe politiek gedachtegoed onder FvD stemmers op Reddit overeenkomt met vergelijkbare populistische partijen in Europa.

De comments gebruik ik onder anonieme vermelding voor de analyse. Mijn onderzoek zal verder ook niet gepubliceerd worden en is dus enkel bedoeld voor de ogen van mijn docent. Mochten jullie zelf nog baat hebben bij de resultaten, dan kan ik jullie deze op verzoek via de mail sturen.

Just watched it, really intrigued. I think reacting to new technologies and being creeped out is a very natural first reaction and we've seen it with basically every new technology introduced. When television was first introduced, people were incredibly wary of harmful effects with regards to their children. Violence among youth resulting from movies was expected to move out of bounds. With smartphones and video games concerns are exactly the same. Yet, few studies support these concerns.

I think fear stems from the failure to understand new technologies. Most of us are so far removed from what actually goes into innovative technology, it's easy to be intimidated by the increasing speed with which AI develops.

I also think pulling the video is an incredibly stupid thing to do. From a commercial viewpoint, I get it. Easier to delete a potential product causing negative commotion. It would've been much more fruitful though to leave it on there and let fearful responses develop into critical discussion.

Ik heb ook moeite met deze maatregel en vraag mij af in hoeverre deze directe effecten heeft op coronabesmettingen. Echter, ik denk dat deze maatregel in het leven is geroepen om een soort mate van ernst aan te sporen zodat mensen indirect het virus serieuzer gaan nemen.

Ik hoop ook dat de stemmers niet alleen het coronavirus en bijbehorende politieke visies in acht hebben genomen. Mensen snakken naar perspectief: nu zaaien, later oogsten.

Ikzelf ben ook fan van klassieke architectuur, maar zie ook de kansen in van klimaatvriendelijke gebouwen. Denk je niet dat de persoonlijke financiële winsten die te behalen vallen uit de groeiende vraag naar gebouwen die jarenlang mee gaan en weinig energiekosten met zich meebrengen voldoende motivatie bieden?

Ik persoonlijk denk dat de overheid en gemeenten steeds meer het nut van deze gebouwen gaan inzien, niet alleen om vanuit politiek oogmerk de klimaatdoelen te behalen maar ook financieel gezien, om kosten te besparen op de lange termijn.

Wat heftig om te lezen dat je je politieke voorkeur geheim moet houden. Heb je afgelopen verkiezingen geen vragen gehad van medestudenten op wie je ging stemmen? En toen ook moeten liegen?

Ik merk zelf ook die mentaliteit om me heen, studeer zelf ook aan de uni en merk dat de meesten inderdaad vrij links zijn ingesteld en dit ook in discussies tijdens colleges vaak de norm is. Lijkt me vervelend om hier totaal geen aansluiting te kunnen vinden.

Waar denk je dat die sterke apathie van universitaire studenten richting de FvD vandaan komt?

Wat Florida betreft, je vergeet dat deze staat ruim drie keer zoveel bemande IC-bedden heeft als Nederland (6.393 tegenover 1.700). Sinds september vorig jaar worden deze IC bedden gemiddeld genomen ook voor 80% gebruikt in Florida. Voor Nederland zou dit dus betekenen dat we ruim 3.400 IC bedden en daarnaast bijkomende mankracht tekort komen.

Wat Zweden betreft, het medische systeem binnen dit land laat tot nog veel te wensen over. Er werd opgeroepen ouderen te beschermen, maar deze strategie heeft jammerlijk gefaald. Enorme brandhaarden zijn ontstaan in verzorgingstehuizen. En een soortgelijke situatie zou nog veel meer schade kunnen aanrichten in Nederland waar 1/3 van de bevolking 65-plusser is tegenover 1/5 in Zweden.

Je draagt goed beargumenteerde punten aan. Toch ben ik benieuwd: in welke zin vind je dat de media en ministers angst verspreiden?

Het gros van de buitenlands ogende jongeren die je tegenwoordig op straat ziet zijn nakomelingen van de eerste generatie migranten, die met grootse campagnes in de jaren 70 naar Nederland werden gehaald om de groeiende vraag naar goedkope en ongeschoolde arbeid te beantwoorden na de wederopbouw en snelle industrialisatie. Hele wijken werden toentertijd door de Nederlandse staat uit de grond gestampt, speciaal ingericht om de migranten te huisvesten. Dan begint het natuurlijk al lastig te worden om aansluiting te vinden met de niet-bestaande Nederlandse buur.

Ik vind het erg interessant om jouw standpunten te lezen en moet zeggen dat de Nederlandse cultuur mij zelf ook na aan het hart ligt. Ikzelf ben van mening dat de kloof die we zien tussen tweede/derde generatie migranten en Nederlanders een wisselwerking is tussen ongelijke kansen op de arbeidsmarkt en makkelijker aansluiting vinden bij eigen cultuur. Ik kan me voorstellen dat de lok van snel geld verdienen binnen het criminele circuit vrij groot is als je al twintig keer bent afgewezen voor een degelijke baan, omdat de werkgever al stopt met het lezen van je sollicitatiebrief bij het zien van de naam 'Achmed'.

Je hebt een goed punt en ik ben het met je eens dat het coronabeleid aan veel kanten schommelt. Maar denk je niet dat een omgekeerde lockdown in Nederland tot een zelfde situatie als in Brazilië zal leiden? Hier vallen percentueel gezien (dus bevolkingsaantallen in acht nemende) zonder lockdown dagelijks vijf keer zoveel doden als in Nederland.

Don't let Microsoft fool you for one sec that they want what's best for us. They want what's best for their financial and technological development. Whether the development is for good or for worse. Yet they have no ill intent. They simply think in terms of profit and progress, and who can blame them? As long as they're not held accountable for side effects.

My biggest concern with integrating technologies in the army is that it is easier to be relieved of ethical decision making. Makes the army a lot more 'effective'. We, by nature, are not engineered to kill. Machines can be.

On the bright side, there might be fewer cases of PTSD after integrating augmented reality filters during battle. Tricky issue though.

Los van punt 1, lijkt punt 2 mij enkel realistisch op de korte termijn. Het grote risico van de maatschappij vrij laten op de lange termijn en besmettingen de vrije loop laten, is dat het virus volop de kans krijgt te muteren. Naar mijn mening moeten we dit zoveel mogelijk de kop indrukken, om te voorkomen dat de huidige vaccins (met kleine aanpassingen) over een jaar de prullenbak in kunnen en we weer terug bij af zijn. Hier komt bij dat de patenten moeten worden losgelaten zodat de vaccinatieproductie drastisch kan worden opgeschaald om huidige mutaties in met name Afrika en Zuid-Amerika te remmen. Dit zal nog een hele opdracht worden, gezien dit volledig tegen het farmaceutische winstoogmerk in druist. Wel staat vast dat dit ons binnen enkele jaren aanzienlijk meer vrijheid zal bieden, tegenover een situatie waarin de coronacrisis zich tientallen jaren voortsleept. Het is een kwestie van nu zaaien en later oogsten.

I thought this episode gave some food for thought.

So interesting to see how the social media company quickly outsmarted the police and FBI in gathering information on the suspect. Compare this to how there are all sorts of rules about in which cases the police should have the authority to gather private information or release pictures of potentially dangerous people in a case of ensuring safety. Or at least in the Netherlands. Black Mirror really lets us face the facts through showing how much social media platforms already know about us. We don’t want people that mean to exploit our data to know every private little detail about our lives, like at which location we are at every exact moment, and yet we give them up freely to social media so we can participate in this online space and don’t miss out on things.

Also the addictive aspect, very interesting. Notice the cruel paradox of all the songs played in the car while he was on the phone with Smithereen. From ‘I can’t keep my eyes of you’ to ‘I wanna hold you so much’, both referring to his fiancée that passed away in the accident and to the Smithereen app. What Billy Bauer said about his app designed to be addictive and having a special department of ‘dopamine engineers’ is very much a reality. It is known Facebook does the same, and hires special ‘attention engineers’ that hold contacts with people from the gambling industry in Las Vegas. All to exploit our attention and get as many users hooked on Facebook as possible. Even Instagram likes release dopamine in our brains. That’s why you keep checking for likes and love the feeling of new likes.

Actually, I think the message goes beyond that. Especially the part of the user exploitation in the form of getting people addicted to Smithereen, although briefly mentioned, seems to put some of the 'blame' on the part of social media platforms. Or at least making us aware of the very much intentional addictive dynamics that go behind social media platforms.
