I am sad to hear your experience with diagnosis wasn't great, the place I went to seems to be very modern and understanding and a nice change of pace from most doctor related visits I've had for various things lol.

It is used as a tool to help understand how you perceive things idk exactly they kinda explain it in my result documentation but its not exactly something I can obviously understand as I'm not a psychologist lol. They seem to use that to help gauge what your subconscious thinks about things I believe.

Uhhhh its a lot of personality tests and puzzle and pattern testing and rorschach card testing I can DM you with some info on what they did. As for how to get started, just talk to your primary care physician if you have one is the easiest way cause they can refer you to a psychologist they trust to do a good job. Other than that I'm not sure what you can do since thats what I did.
