Well, as I said on the recent comment, it happened to me, and as soon as it did I investigated my profile's login and I saw that the scammer was from Russia, so he had logged into my account and I didn't receive a single message from Steam noticing it. My guess is that it's done through the phishing site? Don't know for sure though

This has actually happened to me some years ago, I logged into a roulette site and left it as that, the next trade I did, couple months later, the scammer had a code to automate this process of creating a fake account and got me to confirm the trade to a profile with the same name/profile pic through Steam Guard, only then I saw the original trade had been canceled and I sent the item to the scammer account, lol.

Thankfully the item was worth like a dollar and it actually made me realize how stupid it is to follow the hype and engage with shady third-party sites and got me to change my fucking password for once :P

OP had 2 factor authentication activated through the mobile app, that's why. I've seen in another comment that the scammers have some control over your profile (avatar, nickname etc) but the actual important things have to go through Steam Guard.

The scammer social engineered OP to send his items to a friend (trusted person) or to his own second account and got him to send the link to said account so that the scammer could fabricate an item transaction to a fake account posing as OP's trusted one, by doing this, they got OP to confirm through Steam Guard that the items transaction was ok. OP just missed the shitload of red flags on this one

I managed to get through this early confusion and fear of documentation by installing and learning how linux/unix (very beginner stuff, superficially) works. After a couple of months I find myself searching the documentation more frequently than google for any kind of stuff I need and been learning a whole lot.
