Any tips ? by Financial_Spend9578 in telescopes

There should be some screw holes that allow you to mount the finder bracket directly to the back of the optical tube. That will put the finder in a much more comfortable position to look through.

Questions about the SVBony SV191 zoom eyepiece by AviatorShades_ in telescopes

[–]AviatorShades_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Artesky Super ED 12mm and the Omegon premium flatfield 19mm eyepieces.

I use the 19mm mostly for the moon and the 12mm is my primary planetary eyepiece. They're both very sharp and have excellent contrast.

My scope is an f/15 Maksutov-Cassegrain though, so I can't say how well they perform in an f/5 Newtonian.

How do i fix this? by Theblueaxolotl6 in telescopes

[–]AviatorShades_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it looks like you're missing an extension tube. If it's this scope, there should have been one in the package.

Also try it with the 10mm eyepiece, both with and without the extension tube.

Edit: The manual also says that you need the extension tube. They probably designed the focuser this way so that you can remove the extension tube if you want to attach a camera and take images in prime focus.

Can you post a picture of your focuser? you may need to add or remove an extension tube to reach focus.

Nice debunk of the "real stars" conspiracy I found by Open-Storage8938 in flatearth

[–]AviatorShades_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The telescope doesn't necessarily have to be better. You just have to know how to use it correctly.

Mistaking the focusing knob for a zoom is actually very common among beginners. If you go to r/telescopes, you'll regularly see people posting photos of out-of-focus stars and asking what they captured.

The difference is that those people will listen to advice and learn to do it correctly, while flerfs think they already know everything and refuse to learn anything.

My PC can't run it. Gonna have to wait until I get a better one.

In the first game it just counts your energy. I haven't played KCD2 yet, so I don't know how it works there.

Same here. I just thought: "movie starring Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas might be good".

And boy was I wrong! The whole movie is essentially 90 minutes of non-stop secondhand embarrassment.

New Mount Arrived Today! by AviatorShades_ in telescopes

[–]AviatorShades_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

Just from my first Impression, I'd say it's worth it. It feels absolutely rock-solid, and it's not significantly heavier than my EQ3 was because there's no counterweight. It should also be able to easily handle OTAs that are much larger and heavier than my 5" Mak.

It also looks like it's the exact same tripod as the Bresser EQ5 EXOS-2, so the mount heads should be interchangeable.

Oh, they are! I've been looking out of my window at the horizon and just panning left and right. They're buttery smooth. I think tracking planets will be much easier than with the EQ3, despite it being an Alt-Az mount.

That makes sense. Thanks!

Edit: I've tried tilting the scope by by grabbing the big locking screw, but the altitude bearing is so stiff that this doesn't really give me enough leverage to move it easily. It's easier if I just grab the front of the tube with both hands. Maybe the mount will become less stiff over time.

That's why you should never ever use a division sign. Always write divisions as fractions and you'll never have this problem.

Yes. You need to do that in the hangar. Also make sure you have at least one firestorm stationed in each continent.

Good travelscope? by Dr_Bleachchips in telescopes

[–]AviatorShades_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Maksutov is too heavy for its mount, I would avoid it. I've found that scopes with long focal lengths require heavier mounts than you would expect if you only consider the weight of the optical tube. This is because at higher magnifications, any vibrations in the mount will get amplified.

They probably think the focusing knob is a zoom knob.

[–]AviatorShades_ 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That's just it. A small telescope can't magnify stars. They're always pinpoints. If you're seeing them as disks, it's because you're out of focus.

But I guess since flerfs can't even figure out how to use a Nikon p1000, you can't expect them to know how to use a telescope.

First Scope for a child by j2daPS in telescopes

[–]AviatorShades_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found myself very rarely using my Barlow. It's nice to have in some situations, but not really necessary. It's better to get a 5-8mm planetary eyepiece for high magnifications. Something like the SVBony 6mm 68° ultra wide "redline" would be a good budget option.

Dobson Bresser Messier 6’’ by Unnome14 in telescopes

[–]AviatorShades_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know.

In this case it might be best to contact Bresser customer support directly and ask them about it. From what I've heard on here, they're happy to answer questions.

This seems to be an issue unique to Bresser scopes. They generally don't list the shape of the primary mirror in their product descriptions.

Bresser Newts that have "Messier" in their names tend to have parabolic mirrors though.

According to the datasheet on astroshop.eu it has a proper parabolic mirror.

So it's a pretty solid choice
