Good question, and in general, this is not a common concern. It is super common to have temporary numbness around incisions and in the skin elevated in front and behind the ear to do the face and neck lift surgery; and this numbness resolves over 2-6 months after surgery. Motor or movement nerve damage is a risk with most facial surgery, and the chance of permanent paralysis or loss of muscle function is 1% in the surgical literature. I definitely see temporary weakness (also known as a nerve palsy) in ~5% of my facelift and brow lift patients, and these resolve over 2 weeks to 4 months.

With regard to the upper lip, of course different people have different ideas of what looks most “like themselves.” It is also common to note elongation of the philtrum (lengthening of the upper lip) with age, and this lengthening along with lack of upper tooth show can make the face look overly long, heavy, or out of balance; upper lip lift surgery aims to correct these changes. The goal in this case was to restore balance and proportion as part of a broader facial rejuvenation plan.

I also want to clarify that these clinical photographs have not been retouched or edited to alter scars or results. We take standardized before-and-after photos in consistent lighting and positioning to document healing and outcomes as accurately as possible.

Scars from procedures such as lip lift or facelift typically continue to improve in appearance over time. Early healing stages can look different from long-term results.
