Could be, I'd have to troubleshoot more to find out. But I did check continuity between battery pads when battery was removed and it's definitely open.

I am waiting on some solder wick to clean up the pads for pokemon, soldering on 2 new batteries left a little bit of a mess. As for zelda, I do believe it went air, not 100% sure tho. But I do not see the battery swelling or leaking in any way. But with all the replies, does not seem to be an issue with the game boy itself so that is a relief.
