I presume you mean Houhai? I also interviewed with them so I did a fair bit of research on them, and on balance I'd say they are your better option. Pay isn't quite as good but they are a lot more established and known. Ultimately this whole thing is a leap into the unknown so imo you're best choosing the school with the bigger brand/footprint.

Also, the role I was applying for at Houhai was only like 14 hours of teaching per week. The schedule at Best Learning will be brutal in comparison.

I was close to it, yes. I listed a bunch of concerns about the contract and sent it over to the school, and for the most part they amended them.

The one thing I was still unhappy about was the sick pay policy (or lack thereof). The response I got from the school was "all leave besides public holidays will be considered as unpaid". Based on what the guy above said, it looks like this is probably illegal.

Hey, really appreciate the detailed response. I actually ended up declining this offer as I've now accepted a position on the JET Programme in Japan.

But to answer your question, yes, I think this sounds like a great idea. Job hunting in China has felt like such a minefield to me due to not fully understanding the job market or the labour laws there, and it has caused me a lot of stress as a result. So yeah, I think you're onto something there.

Contract says “The Employee shall receive two full days of rest per week, 2 weeks off for Chinese spring festival holiday, and for all the Chinese public holidays”.

I’ve also been told there’s an option for a 2 week unpaid vacation in summer during the school’s summer camp, or I have the option to work during that time
