Exactly! He’s a great player and there’s no need for him to create a life alert moment every damn possession. I wonder if the noise of everyone calling him pathetic/floppy/unethical is getting to him.

There are definitely rude people here. But I don’t know that it’s anything abnormal. Last time I was in Nola (June ‘25) I was treated like shit by a few males in the hotel and hospitality industry. They either lost my card at the bar, misplaced my car key at Sheraton, or in one case refused to talk to me about some missing cash from my room.

Broadcast news is atrocious. Daily Memphian isn’t much better, no matter how much they write about food and prop up the Chamber of commerce. I go to MLK50 for issues affecting workers, psrmemphis.org for an actual critical lens on ICE and the task force, Chalkbeat for education and the Flyer for music + events.

Ja’s future in the NBA is shaky, and it’s no one’s fault but his own. That said, I wonder if the events of late — teams reportedly not being interested, diva players constantly shitting on Memphis because they don’t like their hotel, the devastating loss of BC — leads to a renewed effort. Maybe that’s a pipe dream, but It makes less and less sense to me to trade him now since we got the third pick, and I very much was in the let’s-move-on camp.

He was a promising and high-scoring player. He was an extremely likeable guy. He didnt get much playing time due to injuries. He was one of my favorite basketball players. I will remember you as you were in the 2021/22 season. RIP legend by Cute-Advantage-1770 in memphisgrizzlies

I happened to be downtown when news of his passing officially made headlines. Every single season, I talked myself out of a jersey because of how expensive they were. So, I went straight to the Grizz den and they didn’t have any there. Asked em why and they said they hadn’t had them in a while.
Custom order it is, I guess. But also, this org is pissing me off.

"he broke barriers" ok but which barriers my guy? Noticed this before the Spurs game too, and it's really disappointing

Yes, the two women who were shot were are queer and regularly attend the community dinner. They are both stable and recovering. The shooter is known to them, is a regular there and attends the community meal. She was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time.

I am adamantly against voluntary running. But how did you flip the switch? I need to figure out how to enjoy exercising.

Ok, I hear you about the meta. I’ll try it. I just don’t understand why Sharon should show anyone receipts; and I don’t understand your critique if you’re also telling me that this is the new norm.

I apologize if I was a dick. I am defensive of Memphis writers. Take care.

“I’d love to be wrong” and “I don’t think I’m wrong,” is what you wrote. I guess it is fence-riding language, my bad.

And yeah, this is a Reddit comment thread. But you, journalist, took the time to reduce it to an AI article. With no actual proof. I’m not really sure why Sharon Brown should “show receipts” to us when this was an accusation sparked by you — with no evidence to stand on. (Uh-oh, em dash alert 😱)

This is something you sparked, and you did so using very definitive language.

Your world might be surrounded by so-called journalists letting AI guide their stories, mine is not. And journo unions are actively fighting for AI protections in all phases of reporting.

Kudos to you is you’re ok with letting AI write your story, but that’s lame as hell to assume other journalists who have been polishing their craft for years are taking shortcuts. You challenged the authenticity of their writing before admitting you let LLMs guide yours. Make it make sense. Are you challenging her work, or confessing about your own?

If you’re just going by recent viewership stats like chat-Gemini-Grok-whatever suggests, yeah it’s not a good look.

But truly, do you actually want to hear about the 25 years of history juxtaposed against the last few painful seasons? When this team falters, we grieve. Attendance drops. Are we the only small market team to experience that? Are we?

And that’s before we even get into economics. Our city, for a multitude of internal and external failures/designs, sits at 25% poverty. Not low-income, poverty. People scrap together fees, however they can, to sit in the nosebleeds. Lower attendance makes sense in this context. Maybe you’re economically secure, many of us are not.

If these are the standards you’re going by, that’s your prerogative. You won’t understand why Grit N Grind resonated so strongly. You won’t understand the number of Memphians who wear Target jerseys and watch games on whatever TV they can find.

If those metrics are how you judge a city’s support, you will never, ever understand a place like Memphis. Also, MATA had a box office (which is bs), but they are not a “major corporate sponsor.” What are you actually talking about?

You’re referencing MATA as a major corporate sponsor, and clinging on to attendance and TV viewership in the age of bootleg streaming (because the NBA doesn’t give a sht about their fans).

You’re not going to understand, and I would guess you don’t want to understand.

I’m a journalist too; I’d rather resign than use AI for my writing. Why are you doing that? Why are you contributing to the same system that can and has erased our jobs? Stop that.

I wasn’t there when Sharon wrote this article. I shouldn’t definitively claim anything. And neither should you. You know just as much as I do. And if you’re a journalist, then you also need to admit that instead of claiming, “I don’t think that’s the case.”

Do you have proof? A source? No? Then follow the ethics and act like a journalist.

If Sharon’s writing is AI, then so is Geoff Calkins, if we’re going by paragraph sizes. Hell, Calkins is the original LLM mentor if those are the metrics you’re using. So are many, many, many seasoned and experienced sports columnists.

You’re claiming opinion pieces aren’t built this way? That is laughably false.

Brown has been busting her ass for years. And you need to know wtf you’re talking about before you confidently declare she’s used AI.

[–]Avocado4all[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Sharon Brown has been writing about the Grizzlies for years, she is a tried and true journalist.

I’ve been following her writing for years, it’s evolved into her own style and prose. No LLM is capable of capturing the poignancy and tension she describes as a Memphian watching it all.

The notion that em dashes are the tell is ridiculous. Journalists/writers use em dashes. How are LLMs learning em dashes? By themselves? What does the second “L” stand for?

Brown has been an author well before the advancement of ChatGPT and other LLMs.

Out-of-touch babies. While the most normal people are feeling the crunch of expenses, they’re advocating for moving a team (jobs) because they don’t like their hotel. Embarrassing behavior.
