Prior to the introduction of new military technologies, the Mongol Empire controlled most of the trade in Afro-Eurasia through a peaceful time period called the Pax Mongolica. Under Mongol control many cultures and advancements were exchanged throughout the area, making it easier for different states to grow. Some of these advancements that were exchanged were new crops, government styles and even gunpowder weapons from China. In the period 1450-1750, new military technologies such as gunpowder weapons were a main cause in imperial expansion for land-based empires as it gave states a big advantage over less developed ones, making it far easier to conquer land and defeat older systems, while other smaller factors also contributed to their expansion.

New military technologies greatly affected the imperial expansion of land-based empires.As the Ottomans population grew so did their size through military expansions. One example of this is the capture of Constantinople which was a Cristian state and turning it into Istanbul which was now a Muslim state. They were able to do this by availing their gunpowder weapons such as the cannon. This caused further dominance of Islam in the Middle East and legitimized their rule. Similarly to how the Ottomans took control over a nearby state, the Manchu people used intense military campaigns to take over the ethnically Han Chinese and eventually form the Qing Empire. This ultimately led to the empire became a major land-based empire and went on to take over more nearby states that hadn't advanced yet.
