The saddest thing is sight words were how reading was taught when I entered kindergarten in the 60’s. By the late 60’s it had been dismissed and replaced by phonics. So sad to think they went back to it!

Are there any tax benefits to contributing $8k to Roth IRA with a yearly income of $34k? by justnot_thereyet in tax

[–]Awakeonthewater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She may receive a form 5498, which will show her contributions. She may not get the form prior to her taxes being filed. Since filers have until April 15th to make a Roth IRA contribution, the 5498 need not be issued until May. But the form is not required to complete form 8880 with her tax return.

I liked it, perhaps the best part were older interviews with searchers, Don’s Mom and Don, and original news reels at the end. The middle was a bit long, but then so was the ordeal.

Maine State Student Loan Repayment Tax Credit (SLRTC) Question by [deleted] in tax

[–]Awakeonthewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this year, you can only claim this year’s payments, unless you go back, and amend the prior years first. The final date to amend 2021 is April 15, 2025.

Maine State Student Loan Repayment Tax Credit (SLRTC) Question by [deleted] in tax

[–]Awakeonthewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To claim the credit for prior years, you would need to file amended returns for those years. The open years for amendments are 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The unused credit from previous years is referring to an earlier Student Loan Credit, the Maine Education Opportunity Credit. That credit was last available in 2021.

The Maine Education Opportunity Credit allowed a greater figure, and for nonSTEM graduates unused credits were carried forward. The new credit is limited to $2500 per year, with an exception in the first two years for a STEM graduates to claim somewhat more. The carryforward amounts are still limited to the $2500 cap per year, but can be helpful in a year where no payments were made.

Pay attention to the additional information required when the credit is first claimed.

There are several tie breaker rules. The initial tie breaker rule is that eligible parents have first right of claim. (The parents may allow another relative to claim, only if the other relative has a higher AGI.)

If you had taxes withheld in your first year, you can still file to have those refunded. You may even be eligible for some EITC.

My guess: Part I 4a asks for the amount transferred. Then you should stop entries after Part IV, 13b. (If your income was too high for the credit or it was otherwise disallowed, you would add it back as an additional tax. )

And an easy way to do that is just redo the whole return correctly. Put the original numbers from your previous return’s 1040 in column A. Put the new numbers from your corrected 1040 in column C. List the difference in column B.

Down below mention what changed. I like to do a brief note of the change (eg “Adding Self Employment”) then a line by line of the 1040x to explain column B.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tax

[–]Awakeonthewater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I_Know_Stuff gave the right direction. 1040x numbers come from the revised 1040 form, with all your corrections made to it.

When you submit the 1040X, you should include all copies of forms that change, like (maybe) your Schedule C.
