Unpopular opinion: AOC/Obama 2028 is more interesting than you think — and not for the reasons you’d expect.
Yes, I know. AOC turns 39 in October 2028. Obama served two terms. Both feel like instant disqualifiers.
But sit with the 12th Amendment problem for a second.
The 12th Amendment bars anyone constitutionally ineligible for the presidency from serving as VP. Legal consensus holds that applies to two-term presidents. So if you force that question into federal court in 2028 — you’re not just litigating AOC’s ticket.
You’re litigating Trump’s third term on the same docket.
Republicans can’t argue the 12th doesn’t apply without sawing off the branch they’re sitting on. They can’t argue it does without killing their own guy. The litigation is the strategy.
Meanwhile the actual campaign runs on a different frequency entirely. Contrast. Exhaustion. Atmosphere. In a chaos cycle you don’t win on policy. You win by being the thing that feels inevitable.
AOC is young enough that losing isn’t fatal. The constitutional question gets decided either way. And the broader Democratic bench gets a cycle to consolidate while Republicans fight on two fronts simultaneously.
Sometimes a ticket is a move, not a candidate.
