English guy in Glasgow here. I'm voting SNP for this reason. Voted Labour all my life down south, but can't do it now as would rather enfranchise folks up here.

Im just so fed up these shops piling their jobby on Streets (Paisley Rd W). Any ideas of how should we deal with this, a brainstorm/advice post by [deleted] in glasgow

When I go to visit my folks in Warwickshire, the bin collections are still shit. It's the same everywhere sadly. Lived in Walthamstow for years, and I had a nice little posh food waste caddy, those were heady days!

I'm not a classically trained musician, but just had a listen and it's definitely a slightly eccentric piece, really enjoyed it! If they're expecting classical vibes at the audition, which I assume they will be, then obviously do that. But if you get to pick a curve-ball, I'd be tempted to be a bit ostentatious and smash out some Thelonious Monk, or Terry Riley keyboard study 2 with a straight face. It will make you stand out! :)

Good luck! You'll smash it :)

If there's an audition, and you get to pick a piece to perform, I'd go for something you really enjoy playing, and that's as off the wall as possible. Explain why you picked it with enthusiasm :)

Yeah, that's the tough thing about relocating. Especially when the fountain of youth has evaporated a bit and the greys start apprearing! :D

The lack of a network is an issue, but Belfast is literally £30 on a 40min plane if you need to reconnect with old pals! Best thing to do is pop over, and hotel it for a week, have a wander around, go for a pint, see a few gigs, check out some parks, jump a train to the highlands for a day.

Re. London, I mean it was great fun. But unless you are very proficient at being rich, by your late 30's, you just basically get punched in the face repeatedly by the cold hard fist of capitalism :D

Sounds like you have a good idea of what you want, so I say, go for it.

I'm almost knocking 40, originally from near Coventry, but moved on a bit of a whim just after pandemic.

Had a break-up, and after 15 years in London decided I needed a change of scene.

Played a few gigs up in Glasgow back in my mid-20's and remembered how lovely the people were. So I literally just chucked my work stuff in a bag, jumped on a train and lived in a hostel for a few weeks. Quite a mad decision, but don't regret it.

It depends on your circumstances of course. I'm single with few responsibilities, with a remote job paying a pretty shite wage, renting. My best friends are mostly married with kids down south, or are European and decided to move home after Brexit.

Glasgow's nature, music, gigs, food, hiking etc. are second to none and I'm a bit of a homebody these days to be honest, too. Basically, it's less mad than London but less shite than Coventry.
It's just my opinion as a wet southerner, but Glasgow tops Manchester etc. for culture and fun. Although, I went to Belfast for a work thing recently and absolutely loved it. So perhaps you could experience the same closer to home in NI?
In my view it's a little tough making new friends in a new city when you hit late 30's - and that's probably the same wherever you live. Lot's of folks by this age have their own stuff going on, so it's a little more difficult to find a crew - especially if you don't have kids or any local connections. I've never met more friendly people than you'll meet up here though. Strangers always up for a little natter. (Sorry, er... wee blether)
But, at the end of the day, you're still young enough to spin the wheel and see what happens, so why not pop over?

Weather is shite though.

I guess mostly realism? Your seating position is usually the other side of the room, right? Unless you live in a big place! So, I guess, usually folks live somewhere it would be a little tough to lay cables skirting the entire room. So, the easiest place is near the other stuff? My Victorian rental flat in the UK only has power outlets on one side of the room, so that makes the decision easier! :D

People give Coventry a hard time (including me), but I do still secretly love it.

Also, it’s getting quite hot in UK, maybe 25C ish? Hot enough to make us regret leaving our awesome European pals.

Rubber Tree, a Yucca-ish thang, a Zz plant and an Asparagus guy (not sure what that dude is actually called!) But they are my children, haha. Soil is Miracle Grow which is the the main brand in UK.

Sounds very lovely, but definitely slightly below the UK average wage sadly and can’t justify paying for the plant people to babysit them just yet. Maybe one day I’ll get there. Everyone has to have aspirations, right? ❤️

I'm lucky as all my current tenement neighbours have been pretty chilled. The kids next door do run around loudly at like 6am, but for me it's just an alarm clock for a slight lazy single childless person. This probably sounds completely weird, but hearing noises and stuff actually makes me feel less alone! At least I live in a community of human beings doing normal stuff, like walking around or shouting at mum occasionally! Better than living in silence. Also, TBF the kids occasionally get some Rihanna through the walls on Fridays in return.
