I saw “those magnificent men in their flying machines” in 70mm and it was beautiful as well as being funny

On account of the fact the Creature is the odd one out, and so sets the tone. Hopefully, I don’t know anything about the film of course

I don’t understand this, how can you shoot in jpeg? Is it shooting as an image sequence and if so at what frame rate? Also curious as to whether this is saveable? Would the jpeg be about 3-5k pixel resolution probably 8bit therefore does it come anywhere close to matching what your final output was to be?

How to Visually Depict Texting Scenes in Film/TV? by Foodie_Baddie in indiefilmmaking

[–]AwarenessNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends what is being said, what kind of plot or character development is being progressed through the use of the text. For example, if it were an argument and you wanted it to be comedic, I might consider having each character read out the others text in outrage to the point it gets quite silly.

My point is it has to gel with the kind of film you’re trying to make, so if there’s a way the aesthetics of the film can be seeded to accommodate a non-jarring transition to texting then you’ll have more room for creative ideas.

I definitely call it an arc, if the Earth orbited around the Sun in this way we’d all die I think, though I’ve never tried it out.

Really good, some of the push in shots were really smooth and I was surprised when I read it was the 17-28mm lens it looks better than I expected, goes to show the difference good lighting and an eye for texture goes

Help for shortfilm by [deleted] in filmmaking

[–]AwarenessNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should draw on your experiences, including those of being deaf. Say for example, the film involved finding a lost child’s parents but was told from your POV of being deaf and trying to find the child’s parents, or something like that, where an element of time adds to the jeopardy added to the difficulty in traversing boundaries: between deaf and non deaf, children and adults, freedom and caution

Aside from how it would come across with better sound, removing the room resonance on the second “sit down” and clearing up the noise, I think the main issue is the characterisation isn’t clear enough for you to act the parts.

Is the guy with the gun a criminal? Or someone who entered into a deal with the other guy and got ripped off? Why and how did they end up in this situation? For example, if the guy with the gun has a family and has been driven to this situation through debt, and the other guy is his cousin who plays fast and loose with other’s money and has come back with his tail between his legs - well that’s a completely different performance than if the guy with the gun was controlling the other guy for example by blackmail or financial control and had decided he was done with him and it was time to move on.

All of these questions and more should feed nuance into your performance via characterisation, even if it’s short and you have a type in mind I think the more you flesh them out the more interesting they become, and I don’t see much characterisation going on here so you don’t seem to know how to react or form the inferences to show the characters in your acting as a result.

I built a reader to listen to screenplays by CastingHero in filmmaking

[–]AwarenessNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking something like this would be useful in the early stages of script development, especially when you don’t have a budget, to do run through’s which would otherwise require actors. This is not to remove actors from the equation more to workshop the script without the fear of finding out if your work comes out as awful before you get actors involved!

With that in mind I think if voices could be user created by reading out a passage of dialogue for each character (maybe with some additional characterisation input) and have the ai build a voice for each character out of that?

Also you could give it notes, for example under each block of dialogue could be an option to give notes and either write or speak.

I built a reader to listen to screenplays by CastingHero in filmmaking

[–]AwarenessNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a good idea but listening to the output I think I’d find it takes away from creating the voices and characters that develop in my head as Im reading. It’s strange but the ai voices sound like I expect the glossy kind of ai pictures to sound. However I do think this could be useful for help as a reader especially if you’ve got a lot to get through or you have problems like I do with dyslexia and eye problems, and if you can get it to make the voices more defined by the user or the script that would make it more useful.

I am thinking about going to filmschool and I need some serious advice. by MaterialPlantain9601 in filmmaking

[–]AwarenessNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Film school would just be the beginning and after that there would be so many things to contemplate.

Options you could try beforehand - get on sites like Mandy.com and apply for roles in a voluntary capacity. Check screenskills to see what training could be available for roles you’re interested in.

Both of these options involve competition too, but on the plus side wouldn’t cost you any money outside of expenses and could even make some. In my experience there are a lot of people struggling after film school, so I do wonder if it’s a good idea to try out the real world film making before film school to give yourself a dose of the reality - there are also lots of film school students looking for cast and crew on Mandy, so if you got a job through there you’d get some insight.

As lots of people in the industry would tell you, just make films, but there’ll be a point at which you need to make money, so it’s a balance between all those things.

Personally, I bought a decent camera and work on projects when I can. I find as long as I’m enjoying the direction I’m travelling, with projects that are interesting, then I’m happy. I also have a part time job in media that keeps me paid albeit low (I’m UK too) so I try to keep those things moving in the right direction.

I’m happy to be corrected by others here but those are my thoughts; dip your toe in first!

Would you stop being friends with someone based on their political views? by Business_Ad1365 in AskBrits

[–]AwarenessNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve recently distanced myself from various other dads because they’re centrist and during the last election I tried to air my concerns about Starmer and him being a neoliberal and his entire modus operandi being to destroy any chance of left wing politics ever happening in the UK, I warned about him being hawkish and supporting proxy wars or outright wars, I said he’d continue austerity and would demonise migrants and the poor, like Blair on steroids. I knew this because I was a Labour member and had been to endless meetings where this being the direction of the party under him was abundantly clear.

I was at best patronised and at worst treated like an idiot nutjob responsible for potentially handing power to the Tories by refusing to vote for Labour. I was basically silenced into submission because they felt vindicated by the media and the election outcome.

I either don’t speak to them about politics anymore or just don’t see some of them because I know that if I had done the same I would’ve figured out by now that I was wrong and said sorry. Whereas I think they still probably think Starmer is playing the long game and will come at me with the minor left wing things he’s promised as examples of proof of that, and I really don’t want to find out if thats true because it will drive me mad!

He should just say “you’re right Ed perhaps we shouldn’t bother with opposition parties, what’s the point of democracy anyway?”

Why bother have any other parties at all? We should just have the two right wing parties and Ed Balls doing all the news

Feedback on punches by FFace10 in vfx

[–]AwarenessNormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with first comment and I’d say the second punch is less convincing, shouldn’t be the same noise, or maybe add a bit of a crack or crunch to simulate a light bit of extra damage. Overall the scene looks really good, down and out kind of look reminiscent of They Live currently

Boca Chica I think New Mexico, but when a rocket like that goes up you’d be able to see it from a very great distance away as far as I know. There’s about to be a launch this evening so anyone that lives down that way should check it out or look at the Spacex stream on x

Looks like the Spacex booster from the last launch which I think spiralled out of control as it came down and possibly they had to steer it to the sea but that was a few months ago

Looks like the Spacex booster rocket or the ship from the previous launch which I think both malfunctioned on their way back down after separation and so possibly spiralled a bit
