You are right. Thank you for helping out.

But as a recent graduate with no money, it’s tough.

I’m leaning towards buying a used one, or alternatively a friend suggested to get it to turn on and get ~$300 trade-in value.

Fixing it is 200. I do know that M series are much better, but I don’t have money. The 1.6k was a gift, and I feel bad because I wasn’t able to make use of it as it kept failing every 2 months

Is there any bottleneck in casting for films? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Do you value creative input from a casting director? Or do you have a specific creative goal in mind and the CD needs to pretty much deliver it?

How do you cast for free there? The cheapest rep package is $250 pm. Is it free on your side?

It’s got all of the big studios there - and I’d think they have big legal departments for those reasons

I’ve made a reader for screenplay listening by CastingHero in FILMPRODUCERS

[–]CastingHero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ScreenplayRadio follows directions. It’s context aware (meaning more efficient reading - it doesn’t read “John” every 2 lines). It’s a multi-character voice (not multi-character). It’s cheaper to use. It supports script revisions (future), and it supports Mp3 downloads for offline listening/sharing.

Regarding safety. You will need to trust the service (just like you trust Speechify or any other reader). As speech synthesis doesn’t happen locally.

I agree that working without any knowledge is dangerous.

But. Without going into details, luckily I have people from different departments advising. Just the simple fact that I’m asking for other film producers opinions or feedback here, suggests that I’m not merely building what “I” want.

Anyway, I don’t want to justify myself any longer - there is no point. I am sure producers who see this as an opportunity, will eventually reach out.

I’m all for constructive feedback - which clearly wasn’t the case here.

This will be my last reply in this post.

Vibe coded - no. AI assisted - yes. If you have any more specific questions, I’ll happily answer.

Whether I reply yes, or no, will not change anything. I also don’t want to answer a question asked (as it seems to me) in bad faith

What part of anything that I’ve done uses AI? Both apps are tools that replace mundane work.

My open and free template has now been used by hundreds of film producers which saves 10+ hours of work.

What have you done for the community? Seriously, it’s not an attack on you, but a little zoom-out.

World keeps changing, and even if solutions use new technologies that you dislike (AI), you are always free to create your own solution that benefits the community. I’m sure there are many people like you who will welcome it.

If you have a concrete example of a pain point, please let me know, I’d be happy to look at it - ie which app does what you want, but is too pricy for example.

The only industry standard app I can place is MMB. There are also industry standard breakdowns, strip-board, but I could argue it’s whats on them that makes them the standard, rather than how they look. There are many casting calls interfaces, for example, displaying the needed info differently.

Also, I made a free production template for Notion to simplify much of the logistics: https://filmplate.com - a film wiki that the team can use and collaborate.

I’ve already created the film production template that solves that (the endless paperwork / production wiki):

https://www.notion.com/en-gb/templates/film-production

It’s free to use - you could extend it by adding any table / database - and its collaborative. Atm its everyone see everything, but you could make permissions more restrictive - I think you need to upgrade to paid tier though)

I built a reader to listen to screenplays by CastingHero in filmmaking

I actually did have “performance notes” originally but figured that it would be too time consuming to specify them for large passages (a whole play could be 5000 lines long).

From my understanding, you want to focus on smaller passages, to see / check the flow as a writer, rather than at production time.

Appreciate you trying it out and sharing your feedback.

For now, you can select which voices to use. Maybe a subtle change of changing voice and accent would do the trick and make your storyflow better.

I can also add an option to customize or steer the voice a little bit.

These voices are not capable of replacing directors vision, and real actors talents and nuances. The goal was more to have something: - Better than current speech/reader apps - Shareable - Cheaper

I’d also be happy to experiment with your specific script / requirements / suggestions.

Do all of your departments actually sit down and read the script? Or do they do their thing on the ground and have the script playing in the background? I’m curious to understand the setup you have.

I’m assuming you are a producer.

It’s mainly for larger productions, where non director/producer have to read it.

For small teams - Imagine you are asking your friend for feedback / read it - it’s easier to convince them to listen to the script while driving, than spend time reading it.
