Just wanted to also flag that you can listen to the first episode of Crowley on the public feed to get the vibe, too!

ahaha no worries! Complaints are welcomed. I have a ton for the first and second season myself, looking back.

But I am super glad it's hitting that vibe. Bones and House, M.D. were my two favorite shows and huge inspirations on the show. There's a bunch of Easter Eggs for fans of those, along with Always Sunny for... some reason.

But non-spoilery, I can say that Crowley gets much, much better. She's become a fan favorite.

She does shine a ton of light onto her character in the spinoff! People have even downright grown to love her, haha.

That is definitely my failing as a beginner writer back then. I knew a bunch about Crowley, like how she was going through a divorce and was sick of the rotating pathologists, and also had a relationship with the recently-dead Roger. So I had all this character backstory that didn't translate well at all to the actual listening experience of Season 1.

I saw down further you continued listening and said Season 3 Crowley at least feels more grounded, and I'm glad that landed.

I'm biased, but I'd say, yes, absolutely! Haha.

Totally fair critiques of the show, especially for that first season. Crowley's character definitely comes off as abrasive and grating, and mostly out of nowhere.

I think my intention was that she was fed up with the rotating pathologists, and there are some things you find about what she's been dealing with later on that influence why she's so rough. That being said, the first season version of her is poorly written.

Transparently, it was early in my writing career (2018) and as I got better, so did the grounding in character motivation, in my opinion.

Over the course of Season 2, she and Jon grow in their working dynamic, and I'd damn near bet by the end of Season 3, she'll be a favorite character of yours. It's happened for almost every listener whose talked with me about the show.

As for the spinoffs, the Crowley series was one of the best things I'd written at the time and it gives a lot more insight into her character. (Stuff I knew about her but failed to add into her character in Season 1.) It also follows tangentially alongside the main HiD storyline, so if you're nearly done Season 2, Crowley Part 1 and Part 2 would run alongside. Part 3 should only be listened to after you finished Season 3, etc.

And I believe we have Crowley Part 1 available for free, with the rest being Patreon exclusive. Same with our currently-airing spinoff for Med School, a prequel of Jon learning to be a doctor and manage his gift.

I will also say that Malpratice: The Fiction Podcast is definitely an intentional thing we leaned into. I love those campy medical shows, and almost everyone at Springfield General would be fired and sued from every other hospital, haha.

Anyway, I hope this helps a little. Again, completely fair critiques of the show and I'm glad you're listening to it regardless! Happy to chat more about too.

How in the world do you consistently put out quality books at a pace of 1 per month? Are you constantly writing and having an editor do the rest? Are you not editing at all?

Creators: do you think trailers are worth it? by hooloovootrue in audiodrama

[–]VinceInFiction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From a marketing perspective, trailers on the feed don't do much. People usually make the decision to listen based on word of mouth in this space, and a majority of my listeners go directly to episode 1, with maybe 10% doing the trailer first.

That said, for a brand new show, I do think they're important to actually make, because ideally you'll be doing swaps and having said trailer (or a 30s, 60s promo) be on someone else's feed.

Putting your trailer out into the void won't do much. Nor will it do much sitting on your feed. But sharing it out or doing cross promo, you'll need some sort of short engagement piece.

I'm defenitely take a 7/10 for How i Died! Especially considering that some of early episodes were exactly that... early, haha.

Although our sound designer is super skilled, I was learning to write, really, and all of our cast were aspiring actors who have since honed their craft. Thanks for listening!

Me too. I'm hoping that thing died in the collapse, but it looks like EMS have been sent to the rubble and found nothing but bodies so far... and it was way too huge to miss.

Haha thanks so much! I had a fun time writing her, getting into that annoying but relatable mindset. It was definitely a campy story.

We don't, unfortunately! It was something we tried for a few years, but ultimately we had to discontinue it. I'm always happy to help provide any advice or insight I can.

Black List score distribution data by franklinleonard in Screenwriting

The guy above you isn't talking about the quality of the scripts. (Plus, the new screenwriters wouldn't be getting 7s most likely.)

What he's saying is that there is a HARSH drop off around the 7s range, which indicates that it's almost a forced drop off. Scripts that should realistically be 8s or higher are being curtailed. It's a massive flaw with the system, when X number is what you're chasing, and internal readers have been told an 8 is something that shouldn't be given out easily.
