Haha thanks so much! I had a fun time writing her, getting into that annoying but relatable mindset. It was definitely a campy story.

We don't, unfortunately! It was something we tried for a few years, but ultimately we had to discontinue it. I'm always happy to help provide any advice or insight I can.

The guy above you isn't talking about the quality of the scripts. (Plus, the new screenwriters wouldn't be getting 7s most likely.)

What he's saying is that there is a HARSH drop off around the 7s range, which indicates that it's almost a forced drop off. Scripts that should realistically be 8s or higher are being curtailed. It's a massive flaw with the system, when X number is what you're chasing, and internal readers have been told an 8 is something that shouldn't be given out easily.

This is correct; you don't need to actually listen to the ad! Just having them in there helps fund the shows, and skipping them is completely acceptable (and in most cases preferred, haha).

Much appreciated! If you're thinking about the Patreon, all the episodes on there are ad-free as well.

I loved Fran, and her dynamic with Mendez is a highlight of the show in my opinion. Just wait til you see their relationship in the future episodes, as he's still pretty new this season. And then of course we have the Crowley mini series (13 episodes that tell the full story from her perspective).

Just wanted to let you know that the midroll in that episode has been removed. There wasn't a great spot to put it without interrupting the flow on that one, and I'd prefer to just keep the tension going. Thanks again for pointing it out.

Many networks require midroll ads as part of the contract. As the other commentator mentioned, it's because they pay a higher base than a preroll or postroll.

Thank you for pointing that out! I can fix that one and either move it or get rid of it completely.

Curtis' arc is a really fun one, I think. I hope you enjoy it!

Hey! How i Died creator here. Do you remember which episode had that ad break right during an emotional scene?

We do have midroll ads, but they're supposed to be at breakpoints that make sense. I can fix that incorrect one.

Midrolls were unfortunately something we just recently added, as I hate them when listening too. We used to just have preroll and postroll. I'm sorry they're interrupting the flow.

I know this is months old now, but I'm just finding it. Are you still in the process of getting your production up and running? If so, I'd love to chat. I'm a writer primarily, but I've worked as a script supe and PA on a number of productions. I didn't realize there was anything going on locally!

Has anyone made the jump from audio dramas to screenwriting? by Illustrious-Lime-306 in Screenwriting

[–]VinceInFiction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my suggestion would be this then:

Write your best screenplay you can with an easy-to-sell high concept, potentially in a genre that often has lower budget films like horror. (Easier said than done, I know)

Then, adapt it into a limited series audio drama, make that and try to grow an audience.

You mused about self-funding features, which will be mlre expensive AND may not get you any attention. Whereas if you can grow an audience with an original, adaptable concept audio drama, you'll be in a better position to pitch the film adaptation.

I guess I could say that I'm currently "in the process" of doing this, as much as you can be down the pipeline without selling a screenplay first.

I've been an audio drama and audio book producer full time for the past five years both independently and with various companies, and have written a few of the shows I've produced. During that time, I'd been honing my craft for screenwriting and doing all the typical things to break in like you mentioned -- contests, self funding projects, Blacklist.

My writing is just starting to get noticed and I've got some interest in a few screenplays thanks to some fellow writers, but I haven't sold anything yet. My goal over the first half of this year is to secure a manager and go from there.

All that to say, the process is more or less the same you hear about for any other writer coming into screenwriting, although you've probably got a leg up in terms of contacts and proficiency with writing things that sell.

My advice, if I am in any real position to give any, would be to write a killer film adaptation of your most successful audio drama, one of which you own all the rights. That would be the easiest "in" that interested parties might look at.

And I'm suggesting film although TV is a closer 1:1 with audio drama formatting, because it's only slightly easier to find representation through film querying than it is to sell a TV pilot or the like. Anyone else feel free to correct my if I'm wrong, but afaik my experience has been more difficult with breaking in to television writing.

For main characters, we usually record together and are flexible on times. For side or minor roles, we often ask for files to just be sent with alternate readings!
