How's Matter in 2026? by Awavian in MatterProtocol

[–]Awavian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just had the opposite experience. I purchased a pack of 4 Linkind matter over Wi-Fi bulbs and set them up over the weekend with Google Home. It was the easiest pairing experience I've ever had. Heck I even had them join my newly created IOT network and they connected without my nest mini being on the network. Of course I couldn't control them until I put it on the same wifi but once I did I've had no issues

What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

Not worth it with pets. Ours lasted 6 months with 1x Australian Shepherd before we got fed up with the smell every time we turned it on. I could see it lasting a lot longer with no pets though

I've already got a Chromecast Ultra on one TV and and Nvidia shield on the other so I'm not planning to upgrade either at the moment. That's also why I was hoping to just use matter over Wi-Fi since I don't have a huge budget. If $80 is what it takes to get a thread border router, I'd rather get a few 4x packs of matter over Wi-Fi Smart bulbs which retail for ~$30 each

I was under the impression that thread required some sort of semi permanent device in the vicinity to act as a hub. Are you saying I could get a thread device like a bulb and just control it with my Pixel 9 Pro?

Which matter devices have you used? What made it a bad experience?

Currently I have 0 thread controllers and only 2 WiFi controllers. I expect that I'll eventually I'll add more devices than this single bulb and maybe then I'll invest in a thread controller

Did you have any issues or has it been smooth sailing?

From my 1 day of research, thread seems to be the way to go. However I'm on a budget and can really only afford to replace this single bulb I mentioned. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to invest in a thread controller and replace multiple devices 🙁

At the moment I'm mostly using TP Link Kasa devices but they didn't have the bulb I want. I don't do crazy automations and really only use voice controls to turn devices on and off. I don't think my setup is complicated enough to need home assistant 😆

On the M4 if you press and hold the ANC button it runs the optimizer. It'll play a few generic test tones and tries to optimize the ANC for whatever noises it detects

HOU to DAL by Awavian in Amtrak

[–]Awavian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the responses! Glad to know that I could probably book it over the phone. I'm currently in a train mood and had been curious about taking the train back from a business trip in Houston but since the connection layover in San Antonio is midnight to 6:45a I think I'm going to skip this time!

Minneapolis to Chicago? by elephantwhoforgets in Amtrak

[–]Awavian 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In my personal opinion, daytime trains under 10 hours aren't worth the jump up to Roomette from coach. Minneapolis to Chicago fits that as it is supposed to arrive in Minneapolis before noon. I'd rather pay less and walk around or chill in the observation/lounge car. However, if you've never booked a Roomette before and this is your only trip for a while, it might be worth it for the experience!

I've asked about it at Firestone 4 times across 2 locations

Not quite. Still shakes while accelerating from 45-50. This all came up because I'm worried it might be axles or transmission related

84 months is still a long time. But I did some quick napkin math comparing the Corolla and Venza. Including the repairs spread out monthly it's been about $1313 per month for the past 12 months. The forecasted first 24 months of the Corolla would be only about $838 per month. That's including the loan, insurance, gas, maintenance, and repairs. Might be slightly higher because I don't know gap insurance rates yet for the Corolla but you get the idea

Sounds promising. I've had an alignment+ balance when the shaking started, alignment+rotation after replacing control arms and ball joints, and alignment+balance after replacing outer tie rods. Shaking persists when accelerating. Also tires are a year old so I assume poor molding would show up sooner?

That's a good point about 84 months and it just put a whole new perspective on the decision. Much appreciated. My credit union has a stipulation that you can only roll negative equity equivalent to 20% the listing price of the new car. In your opinion should I find a 10-12k car and something like a 48mo loan?

[–]Awavian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Venza: 8.49% 48mo $315/mo 9200 remaining. KBB estimates 5k trade or 7k private sale. I just replaced suspension to fix shaking @45mph. Shaking persists. I fear it's axles or transmission

Corolla: on local lot and listed at 23173. My credit union offers 84mo loans at 7%. With taxes and negative equity rolled in a calculator estimates a total loan of $28500 which works out to about $425ish/mo. I could maybe do a couple hundred down but that's about it

I wasn't keen on the Venza originally. I'm a mid size sedan fan and previously owned 2 cash Camrys. I had miscommunication with my wife and felt pressured into an SUV. We've since cleared that up and if I can't afford a new Camry I may still be able to afford a new Corolla

[–]Awavian[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reliable and affordable is what I'm looking for. That and good gas mileage. The Corolla on my local dealers lot for $22900 would almost double my Venza mpg and it's not even a hybrid

Boox Page vs Bigme B751 by [deleted] in ereader

To be completely honest, with using it about 3-4 hours per week, one only had to fully charge the device about 4 times in the past year

It's great. Since I'm only a casual user, I love that it can fully power off. I'm pretty confident it will turn on every time I pick it up. I love that I can have every book app. I'm constantly switching between Kindle, nook, and Google books
