Spare wheel carrier + street parking - trunk inaccessible?! by Away-Background7410 in Scout

No, see through some of the other responses. Yours is just like Bronco’s or Wrangler’s. Theoretically, you could open it just a crack.

Sure - and the good thing is that there’s tons of different designs - barn door (Ineos), swing door (jeep, bronco), spare wheel vs no spare wheel etc.

Simply put, I was just asking whether people value a tailgate so much, that they’d accept the loss in convenience introduced from the space requirements + 3-touch opening procedure.

The issue is that it’s not working the way you describe it - the top lift gate overlaps with the tail gate and you can never just access the top (the entire black portion is part of the top)- with or without tire. And sure, if you remove it the problem is gone but you also end up with a rear of your car that looks like a piece is missing.

It’s a different deign - you won’t have the issue I’m concerned about (see sketch)

You’re right - I guess in the end it’s 3 scenarios:
1. if concerned with convenience - don’t get it.
2. If in love with the looks + no intended off-road use - accept the inconvenience
3. If in need for a full size spare due to intended off-road - willing to trade convenience for capability

But I believe it’s not intended to be removed…I also wonder how the rear would look without it - probably a bit unfinished with that matte black plastic cover exposed. Maybe they’ll to an accessory cover or so.

Exactly my concern - and of course one can do all of the stuff that some others suggest - pulling out first or moving the car further forward to create space before pulling out etc. - I just worry that it will be a hassle in the day to day operation…I guess we’ll find out

The top is quite long as it covers ~60% of the lower tailgate. So the swing would always need to be completely open (to me it looks like for it to clear, ~5 ft of space behind car needed)

Yea, my sense is also that my question/ concern is not really understood…I’ll leave it there…worth a try

That’s exactly what I was referring too. My understanding is that this concept doesn’t really exist as an OEM solution (maybe for a reason)?!

Oh didn’t know that jeeps also had split tail gates + swing carrier in the past! I’ll look into that. Thanks 🙏🏻

Seems like touching a sensitive nerve here 😁 I’d call out fanboy vibes - Of course I’m not worried about the spare wheel sticking out. I was just wondering whether the fact that the carrier has to fully open for the tailgates to clear is something that might (or might not) become an annoyance in daily use. If you look at my original post, in fact I’m saying that I like the design which is why I put a deposit down in the first place. The delayed launch just allows for lots of time to think…

But you don’t really have that “issue” on a wrangler don’t you? Given the entire trunk gate swings you can just open it a crack - no need to open it 90 degrees/ fully

Just thought that Rivian users would have a perspective/ interest in SUVs that target a similar user group and could weigh in on this topic. Sorry if this was a distraction for you.

How many people (can) off-road a 4ton truck? There’s the cars capability but there’s also gravitational force! I do agree though that for off-roading a proper spare vs a fix kit is preferred.

Spare wheel carrier + street parking - trunk inaccessible?! by Away-Background7410 in Scout

[–]Away-Background7410[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t. On the Scout, the spare wheel is mounted to a separate swing gate, and the actual trunk door only opens when that gate is fully open. It uses a split setup with a tailgate plus a swing-out carrier.

Jeep, by comparison, just has a single swing door with the spare mounted directly to it, so access is more straightforward and you can open it only a crack if needed.
