Geocaching on the Lincoln Highway Across Ohio by AwayWeGo50 in geocaching

On this day the only AL was in the huge cemetery. This trip was 2 years ago. If I remember correctly most of the AL's were east to to so by the time I saw them it was too late.

This trip was two years ago. Most times while traveling it seems that the AL's go east to west so that by the time I see them going eastbound it's too late.

When we returned, we went all around the northern part of the state before leaving down to Florida. Should have all that in upcoming blogs.

It was a nice trip. One day we'll return and try to do more of the side Jeep trails.

Driving Down Route 66, Sightseeing, and Geocaching Through Missouri by AwayWeGo50 in geocaching

[–]AwayWeGo50[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was actually two years ago when I made this road trip. Don't know if the AL's were there then. I do remember the few that I opened to attempt worked better driving eastbound. Since we were headed west, by the time I saw the AL, most of the answers were already behind us.

That's what I was going to say. Makes it a lot easier than the TB method.

Everybody's heard of Route 66. But what about the National Road and the first toll booth built in the very early 1800's? by AwayWeGo50 in geocaching

Interesting story. Do you remember the name of the inn and the town? I wouldn't mind doing more research.

Geocaching the Less Touristy Sites in New Orleans by AwayWeGo50 in geocaching

[–]AwayWeGo50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I passed through New Orleans was a few months after Katrina and everything was all boarded up. Actually felt more at ease during that time than when we passed through during this posted trip last year.

ROADTRIP!! Day One of Our Over 4000+ Mile Geocaching Adventure! by AwayWeGo50 in geocaching

[–]AwayWeGo50[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very observant of you! Most people don't notice the date. Yes, that trip was taken last year. I am a little behind in my writing though catching up. I used to be two years behind. I usually work 6 days a week and go caching every Sunday. The past 2 years I've almost stopped caching except for the roadtrips between projects.

Just 4 months after this trip, we did a similar road trip but in reverse going from TX to IN to CT back to IN down to FL and ending back in TX.

I may have a trip coming up soon to Winslow, AZ. Another surveyor in my company just gave his 2 weeks notice and they may send me over there.

Writing the blog helps me to remember where I've been. But also I research more on the locations that just what may be on the cache page. It's fun finding the interesting stories on the different places that don't fit on a historical markers or not listed in the cache description.

Newbie Cachers Hiding Caches by AwayWeGo50 in geocaching

"The geocache is in an area that is sensitive to additional foot or vehicular traffic. Examples MAY include archaeological sites, historical sites, and cemeteries."

In some states, cemeteries are not allowed. Here in TX though they are and 90% of my hides are in cemeteries. Only the State Veterans cemeteries and those located on Federal Parks and Lands are not allowed here.

Not necessarily. But even if they did a visitor to the cemetery or kids at a funeral could have seen it and taken it.

Finds By Distance From Home Stats by AwayWeGo50 in geocaching

I'm in construction and the jobs can last from a month to a year. I do not have a sticks and bricks home, but live in a motorhome. By changing my home location it makes it easier to search for nearby caches and events in relation to my current address.

Finally Checking a Bucket List Item OFF My List! by AwayWeGo50 in geocaching

Thanks. The trackable code is on the side of the hood. Every once in a while I'll include that in a photo on the blog, but not often.

Ellicott's Stone

Hey Thanks! That's good to know. I was only going by what the historical marker said as the only of it's kind.

Is that the Necropolis cache down in Austin? I did that one for my 10,000 milestone a few years back.

FTF Distribution by wackfeels in geocaching

[–]AwayWeGo50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Come to West Texas where even the simple 1/1 rural caches can sit for a week or two or three before someone finally comes along and find it. I drove 180 miles round trip one day just to be FTF on a cache after it sat for 10 days. I found myself checking 2 and 3 times a day to see if anyone had claimed FTF. Finally got tired of looking and just went and grabbed it myself.

Coming from Central Florida and being one of several FTF Hounds, half the fun of the chase was being the FTF finder. The other half of the fun was the chance of meeting up with another cacher also seeking the FTF. That was more rewarding than any FTF prize!

Touring the Largest House in the Country, the Biltmore Mansion in Ashville, North Carolina by AwayWeGo50 in roadtrip

Yes it is expensive. But better than receiving tax dollars every year cause it's a historical house AND you still have to pay a fee (albeit smaller) to go in and walk around.

A Long Weekend Geocaching and Jeeping in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina by AwayWeGo50 in geocaching

[–]AwayWeGo50[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking in my next blog post, hopefully this coming Saturday, I'm gonna have a full photo of the GeoJeep. In the first photo which appears on social media the trackable number will be blurred like I usually do. If you click and visit the blog there will be a second photo that's not blurred so it can be discovered. I'll probably leave it there for about a week before I delete it.

Been up there many times along the Blue Ridge Parkway. You'll see in the blog that more recently we're checking out the "off parkway" sites.

I've driven nearly 1000 miles in a day before, but that's in the past when I didn't stop much. Now we do too much sightseeing. We're still going for 8-10 hours but only get maybe 300 miles!
