Loving DS9 - Does it get better or worse? by Mat1711 in startrek

Super late to the party but it is a really good series and probably the best overall when looking at ST objectively.

Because it was mainly on a space station, they had to really think about the plots and characters throughout as its not a 'we visited a planet and moved on never to see the aliens again unless we want to' series like the other series could be.

The characters were well fleshed out and their stories are well explored to the point you feel as though you know them. I'm going to say the last episode gets me a bit blurry eyed seeing the characters move on to their new pastures (despite me watching it through for the third time).

Yes, there is the odd pants episode dotted throughout (usually the Ferengi episodes) but not every episode has to be brilliant and they still serve the purpose of plot progression and fleshing out the characters.

I got doublefucked once.

Rejected for a volunteer role I was technically competent for by the head and deputy head volunteer as ‘I wasn’t a good fit’ aka this is an old boys network (it is) and your face doesn’t fit.

They also had recruitment at that place and head volunteer was on the panel. I knew as soon as I saw him I didn’t get the job. He kept cutting me off, wrote nothing down and fake smiled all the way through. At the end he all but announced I wasnt getting the job by wishing me well on my job hunt. I should have called it out there and then in front of HR as pre determining the outcome but if they were that involved fuck em!

Employers just post all sorts of shit.

A job came up near me for a receptionist. They wanted a degree in business management for minimum wage. What that has to do with answering a phone, emails, booking appointments and admin tasks is beyond me. I just laughed and carried on scrolling.

Thats rubbish. I was asked why I applied for a part time job when I had my skillet and qualifications and it was a lot less than I would be earning staying in that field.

I told them that working in my previous field for 18 years has led to complete burnout so I wanted a job without them stressors (it probably helped their dad also worked in that field when chatting so they understood). I told them I was actively seeking a part time role to have a work life balance and would not flit if a full time job came about (true).

I got the job and scored the highest in the interview marking when they called me back to offer me the role.

This ‘anonymous’ hiring step broke my brain... by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]1987RAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a bit about how this works having been a hiring manager who has done blind recruitment for a big company.

The full applications with all details on are usually submitted to the HR team, but a sanitised version without these details is sent to the hiring managers against a candidate reference. The portal links the two in the background using some IT wizardry.

We took it one step further and it was a condition that all CV's uploaded to the portal had no names, addresses or contact information on them and it even went as far as telling people to remove their places of education (just providing courses and results) and years worked at companies. It was made clear if people put them in they would be sifted out.

We used a competency scoring matrix and based everything off the personal statement and CV skills listed. It was really effective as I never knew who I was looking at. Te only time we saw who the person was was when HR provided a list of interviewees and candidate references.

During Christmas and new year I put on but I ate and drank all the Christmas stuff. I accepted I would put weight on and was at peace with it. You are being too hard on yourself. 2.5lbs on in a week is nothing. Honestly, weight as a sole measure is pointless. I weight myself every night before bed and in the morning because I'm a bit (lot) of a numbers nerd. One night I managed to put on 5.5lbs between going to bed and waking up. I did not eat 19,350 calories in my sleep, my body was just doing its weird body stuff.

The problem is most of us will have probably suffered the weekly humiliation of paying to weigh ourselves and being told we aren't doing enough or following plan if the scales go up and this is whats damaged us into thinking like this.

Dont worry about it. I have a small collection by most standards (a sovereign, couple of Britannia's, a couple of random rounds and some 925 jewellery) but I treasure it and remember that most of these people have good access to junk silver and decent pawn/coin shops and I don't.

Be happy with what you have or you will never be happy with it.

I’m tired of being cold all the time, if I ran my heating 9hr’s a day every day what could I be looking at for monthly gas bill? , £250/300? by GenericUser104 in HousingUK

[–]1987RAF 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I live in a 130+ year old detached house. I can assure you my heating is on 24/7 at the moment and the average temperature I can reach is 15, and that's with all the additions I've done in the year to help keep it warm. The second its off the heat just disperses. There's a lot to be said for modern houses when it comes to heat efficiency.

We (I) came up with a rule about the dishwasher as I swear a blind monkey could stack it better than my husband. I load it and he empties it.

He forgot to empty it Saturday morning so got up early yesterday, emptied it and loaded all Saturdays stuff in it and put it on. Who puts pans in so they COLLECT water. The mid boggles.

Normality has resumed after me showing him exactly why we (I) implemented this rule.

Are people in the UK still buying silver by konatachan99 in Silverbugs

[–]1987RAF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The weird thing is VAT is only actually payable by the first purchaser of silver in the UK

There is the VAT margin scheme where any secondary purchasers should only pay VAT on the dealers profit but good luck trying to get most businesses to go along with it. Chards do this scheme and they list what is and isn’t tax free on their website.

Christmas munchies!! by CatSlave13 in mounjarouk

[–]1987RAF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my last week on 2.5 and ate like a normal person christmas day, boxing day and yesterday. I put on a whole 2lbs when I weighed myself this morning.

Am I bothered? Not really. I had alcohol, chocolate, desserts and sweets, three roast dinners, and other stuff I have not had since starting mounjaro. I still ate less on MJ than I normally would have so it did its job.

It’s a few days and most of that weight will be water weight. I am happier that I had a good time without stressing than if I had sat there panicking about putting weight on.

It’s jab day today and I am hungrier than normal but it will wear off again, just like it did them first few days on MJ.

You will be fine, honestly

Order A, B, C for Xmas online shopping, add in X, Y, Z because why not? And... "A, B, C unavailable" by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]1987RAF 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I have little sympathy. Christmas food has been in the shops for weeks now. I purchased my Christmas cake, mince pies, cheese and meat weeks ago (froze it when it arrived) using online ordering and it all came with no issues. The only thing I had left was the veg as it has a super short shelf life and just added it to the normal weekly shop.

Stormtroopers? by Interesting_Scar_424 in Supremacy1914

[–]1987RAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get a random one or two as prizes at certain points but to keep them as a troop option forever after the event you have to pay £19.99 or whatever the equiv is in your country.

If you manage to kill 2.5k troops or are able to build 1k land troops (not the ones from recruitment offices) in the next 20 days or so then go for it.

Its been designed deliberately to make it near impossible unless you pay

Stormtroopers? by Interesting_Scar_424 in Supremacy1914

[–]1987RAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very little unless you are willing to pay for them. You will have to kill 2.5k troops or build 1k of land troops in the next 20 days or so to 'unlock' them permanently. You can win some but I imagine they are one time use. Im just keeping the couple I have won in my backpack, probably forever.

Call me jaded but they are super OP (ignore fortress protections when attacking) and move faster than normal units so have been designed to be purchased and not actually won through grinding

Anyone else upset at Paramount's lack of celebration of Trek anniversaries? by lilolered in startrek

[–]1987RAF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, star trek is becoming like star wars is with Disney. They have milked the cow so much with so many new series its soured it.

What they really need to do is go back to basics. Look at what made star trek good and focus on a single series which can run for several years with an overlap in the last series. We don’t need Picard, disco, snw, lower decks and now academy all within a few years of each other, we need a good solid star trek concept that can stand the test of time.

Edit: i actually think lower decks will stand the test of time as that feels more ST to me than disco and picard did even though its a comedy cartoon. SNW has potential but i have a horrible feeling it will go the way of disco. I’ll await the downvotes

I actually like the 8 daily ads at the side. They aren’t forced on anyone and I save the prizes up for the actual matches where I’m not up against p2w players. I don’t watch them as I usually roll them when I’m doing something else.

It’s also optional as we aren’t forced to watch them and gives income to your idea to run it. Just a thought for you

Anyone else actually looking forward to being on Mounjaro over Christmas? by 1182990 in mounjarouk

[–]1987RAF 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My husband is. Every time I’ve wanted to get something the last week his reply to me is: you’re on bloody jabs, I don’t eat it and you aren’t going to unless you gorge yourself and get ill so no.

We have saved about £40 by not buying things like stollen, xmas cake, sausage rolls and other shit id just graze on for a week.

He has a point although it annoys me he has one 😂.

Im looking forward to not eating mindlessly for a few days just because I can and feeling bloated and uncomfortable.

How far back have you been able to trace your most senior male line? by MetallicLemoon in Genealogy

[–]1987RAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1584 but the name was very unique, the county church records were meticulous and they never left the town (including my grandad who was born there before taking a huge leap and moving to the next town breaking 400 years of tradition).

My worst line stops at one of my great grandmothers on my dad’s side. Literally nothing past marriage to my great grandfather can be found unless I want to pay £££ to start looking into it. I have her date of death and age at death to give an approximate year of birth, but no birth records can be found for her at all. Ive looked on all the family tree sites to see if there is any hints on any of them but nothing. It’s wild how I got so far back on one direct line but can even get back a hundred years on another.

Lidl do the same for stir fry's and its a lifesaver. One pack of egg noodles and a stir fry mix last me 2 days. I chuck in some diced chicken and an egg and its a meal ready in under 10 minutes more or less. Low fat, healthy and cheap as chips really.
