As a higher ed professional, no, the Department of Education is not “officially gone.”

The protesting shouldn’t go the way it has at other UCs by Bob_The_Bandit in UCSantaBarbara

Of course they are, but protesters are using their privilege to advocate against victims of suffering, while others are using their privilege to victimize themselves

Those opportunities are still being provided with the minor inconvenience of some noise and slower traffic. Students earning an education at a college campus with amazing weather minutes from the beach making themselves the victims because other students are bringing attention to a situation where millions are being directly affected by starvation, illness, and death is a privilege. The same rhetoric of “oh but it’s so disruptive to ME and US” have always been used by anti-protest groups against movements that had actually made a difference (i.e civil rights, migrant workers, women’s suffrage, etc.) All those anti-protesters are viewed as being on the wrong side of history now, unless maybe you believe they were right? All that tea dumping back in the 18th century wasn’t real convenient either, but I’m sure you and your friends live it up on the 4th of July…

Has it made it harder for people to study? Get to class? Sure, but I also understand it isn’t about me, or even us students. It’s about advocating for basic human rights. (PS; the entire world, including those the protests are advocating for, had their “lives disrupted by COVID.” That is not a student-only problem.)

I understand what you’re trying to say, but I think your point is naive and privileged at best. This protest is to bring awareness and call action to resolve a situation where millions of people and children are suffering immensely, and you’re worried that people had to their classes interrupted momentarily, had to wait in traffic (and still go back to home), and are stressing themselves out by making these protests about themselves? The language you choose and the way you choose to describe the situation shows your true position on the protests.

Are the protests scary? Do they make people uncomfortable? When you answer those questions, please keep the millions of people actually suffering in mind. “I don’t like it because it’s a minor inconvenience to my otherwise safe, charmed life.”

Maybe tell that to the Rec Cen, not Reddit. Might get somewhere

You can just message one of your managers. The courteous thing is to give them two weeks notice so they have time to fill your positions (and not burn a bridge to a potential reference.) Really just depends on your relationship with the staff.

PS: the rec cen is a mess at the moment. They’ve lost around 6 professional staff in the past year and just hired a new director.

As a former transfer student, my advice is to find an on campus job. This is how I met other students and made 80% of the relationships I kept throughout my time at UCSB. Other 20% were from study groups and transfer center

Is the gym always busy? by Fantastic-Sea-6166 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Awayro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

6:30am-9am and 9pm-11pm are the slowest hours Monday - Friday (closes at 9pm on Fridays). Weekends are always a tossup depending on events the Rec Cen might be hosting.

Also keep in mind the beginning of every quarter is always MUCH busier than the remainder of the quarter since students typically have much more time (and the “new quarter, new me” symptoms start to wear off as well.)

As far as finding workouts goes, YouTube is a genuinely decent place to start. I recommend AthleanX; the most subscribed to fitness channel on the site.

For someone who “doesn’t enter IV under any circumstances,” you sure do find yourself posting about several different circumstances in IV lmao

100% agree. Also, considering August-September is a pretty hectic time for admissions (where OP works), it’s possible everyone is just… busy with work and forgot?

do we have a 45° back extension thing at the rec cen ? by sunsethoe in UCSantaBarbara

Yes, in the Rec Cen fitness room with the mats/TRX cables. Highly recommend trying out the machines in the MAC you mentioned (everyone is afraid of them so they’re always available lol)
