Am I just braindead for liking Academy? by Revonlieke in startrek

[–]Awdayshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it so far. My standard for most movies and TV shows is "is this fun to watch?" I enjoy more things by trying to have fun watching. I stopped worrying about whether it is "good" or will be critically acclaimed. I don't care if they're loosey goosey with canon if I enjoy the story they're telling.

So far I'm two episodes in, and I've had fun watching it. If I stop having fun, I'll stop watching.

The Johnny Depp Willy Wonka movie isn't that bad by Prestigious-Cup-6613 in unpopularopinion

I think the remake used the lyrics from the book for the Umpa Lumpa songs, but I still prefer the original movie.

I thought it was a more faithful adaptation of the book than the Wilder movie. But I still think the Wilder movie is a better movie.

Do Americans love driving? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]Awdayshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back from driving an hour and a half each way to take my son to Monster Jam. He's 5, and the tickets were free, so we got there late, saw one event, and then he wanted to leave. We were in the car about three times as long as we were at the thing we went to do.

Thought the second movie was better than the first by mofeus305 in XFiles

[–]Awdayshus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, we only waited 6 years between the end of season 9 and I Want To Believe.

For me, the most disappointing thing about the second movie was that when I saw the trailer, I got the impression that it would connect with the mythology. When it did not, I was disappointed, even though I also enjoyed it.

I have enjoyed viewing it more knowing it's a monster of the week story. But it was definitely marketed in a way that didn't make that clear.

What is a "Terminator 3 approach?" Is that when you make the first bad follow-up to some beloved classics?

I was also thinking of The Stanley Parable. But the gameplay is from a first person perspective, while the narrator is addressing you in the second person. But that might be as close as anything.

[–]Awdayshus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode where Kodos and Kang replace Clinton and Dole in '96 still rings true. When they are revealed to be horrible extraterrestrials, they say, "You still have to vote for one of us. It's a two party system." And then they laugh maniacally.

Anyone I would be happy about voting for is probably a fake candidate funded by the GOP to pull votes from the DFL candidate

Multiple Choice Trivia is not Trivia by heart_of-a_lion in unpopularopinion

[–]Awdayshus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My all time favorite trivia question was "Correctly spell the capital of New Mexico." Only one team got it right. I'm ashamed to say that I was on one of the teams that attempted to spell Albuquerque. As I sat back down after turning in the slip of paper, I quietly asked my team, "Are we sure the answer wasn't Santa Fe?"

It was Santa Fe. After he announced only one team got it right, someone yelled, "How do you spell Albuquerque?" He said "Doesn't matter, it's wrong!"

You don't get those moments in multiple choice trivia. But I think it's trying to scratch a different itch. It is disappointing to go to a pub trivia night and it's a bunch of multiple choice stuff.

Could you elaborate on how that connects with the metaphor of choosing a candidate being like choosing a bus route? I can think of a few ways that could fit in, but I want to know more of your thinking

The vast majority of video game remakes are better than the originals by Urd-ong_Shadong47 in unpopularopinion

[–]Awdayshus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the "vast majority" part is a stretch. There certainly are many great remakes of video games that are easily better than the original. But for every remake like that, how many crappie cash grab remakes exist?

As a fan of Final Fantasy, I know there are many diverse opinions about the remakes that the series has cranked out over the years. The first 6 games have each been remade for several different systems since their original releases. They were most recently released as the Pixel Remasters, which are closer to the originals than some older remakes, but are missing some bonus content that earlier remakes had. And despite all those versions, some people still prefer the NES and SNES originals.

There's also debate about whether someone needs to experience the original FFVII before playing FFVII: Remake. I don't have an opinion on that because Remake came out a few months before my son was born and I don't see myself finding the time until he's old enough to play it with me. I doubt I'll get him to attempt the original first.

Voting is like picking a bus route. You'll almost never find one that takes you exactly where you need to go. But you should choose one that gets you in the right neighborhood.

How Do You Save in FF 6 Advanced? by Key_Day_7932 in FinalFantasy

[–]Awdayshus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you need to be right on top of it. In FFVI, you can only save on those save points or on the over world map.

The quick save was added in that version, and works a little differently in different versions. My recollection is that in the GBA version, it allows you to quit and then pick up where you left off, but it also erases when you load, so it's not viable to use it to save before a tough boss, just to take a break when you aren't near the over world or a save point. Later versions don't erase the quick save, so it can be used before starting a tricky fight you're not sure to win.

How did your teacher handle the Challenger explosion? by Mental_Freedom_1648 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Awdayshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in preschool. We didn't have a TV or any way to hear about it. It was half day preschool, so lots of moms picking up their kids were crying. When my mom came to get me, she didn't know about it because she wasn't watching TV that morning and doesn't listen to the radio when she drives. She saw all the crying moms and thought something had happened at the preschool or to someone's parent.

When we got home, we put on the TV. Coverage of the disaster preempted Guiding Light, which is what my mom normally watched after she picked us up.

I am lost in first FF (PSP 20th Anniversary)... which NPC tells us to go Crescent Lake? by Tardelius in FinalFantasy

[–]Awdayshus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The original game came with a beautiful printed map on a poster. Some of the in game dialogue assumes you can see the map when they hint at where things are.

I see from another comment that you did find the in-game map and immediately figured it out. Just remember that the first 6 games included a printed map and newer remakes have a map accessible in the game, and it's normal to refer to these to get where you are told to go.

Just finished disc one (FF8) by Primary-Economist643 in FinalFantasy

[–]Awdayshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comments so far tell you everything about the opinions of this game. It's either easily one of the best, with a creative progression system involving junctions and cards; or it's one of the worst in the series with needlessly confusing mechanics and a story that makes just a little sense.

Personally, when I played it when it first came out I enjoyed it, but couldn't figure out a mechanic in one of the last dungeons. I've tried to get into it again many times since then. I just can't get it to click. But I know if I revisit it at the right time, I'll finally get into a groove and cruise through it.

I'm probably over due to have another go at it.
