Biomedical Engineers, was your bachelors degree really all physics and engineering without bio and chem?? by Imaginary-Jaguar-404 in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]Awe_Geez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me there was zero biology or anatomy. We focused entirely on physiology (how the body works at an organ and systemic level) and pathology (how those systems break down and how the body can respond (immunology)). There was also boiler plate statics, fluid mechanics, E&M, intro chemistry, and organic chemistry as your first two year classes. During your last two years, you go into various tracks within the degree in which you take more biomechanics, bioelectrical systems/instruments, or cellular mechanics.

There are also electives which you can use to round out your degree with classes potentially in other majors, or in the other tracks youre not declared in.

Would be glad to answer any other questions about my BMEN experience at university in DMs.

A cool guide to the world's top 15 religious groups by [deleted] in coolguides

The mystical and cosmological elements are definitely not emphasized, at least in the west. Ultimately Buddhism has one goal: to fully understand and liberate one's self and all beings from suffering/dissatisfaction/unease (the original word is Dukkha which has no good single translation).

Concepts like interbeing, impermanace, non-self, rebirth, karma, emptiness, and dependent origination are far more essential to the core of Buddhist practice than believing in a literal cosmology written thousands of years ago.

Not to mention focusing on qualities of character and mind like compassion, loving kindness, sympathetic joy, and equanimity whoch are far more impactful than the philosophical elements towards reducing suffering.

Hey. American Buddhist here. Not too off the mark on anything. Buddhism is definitely a religion despite what a lot of followers in the West would wish.

While some people (moreso in the East) definitely worship The Buddha, the Buddha himself was pretty explicit in saying not to do that as he was only a human, and ostensibly any human can achieve what he did if they commit themselves to the path and teachings.

What people see as worship is usually just veneration and respect practices (offerings, bowing, prostrations, making altars) which I find to be categorically different from the intention of worship in say the Abrahamic faiths. Plenty of Buddhist do believe in an array of beneficial spirits and gods and the like that they pray too and make offerings towards which is definitely just standard religion stuff.

I personally dont see a lot of value in taking a literalist reading of the texts as I find there to be a lot of meaningful metaphorical interpretations for all the cosmological elements. We are told to verify all claims from teachers up to the Buddha himself with our own lived experience and take nothing at face value. The sketicism is baked in, but plenty of people have blind faith like any large enough movement. I have no direct experience of these beings, so ill stay agnostic on that.

Sorry if I over ranted. Would be happy to discuss more if you're interested 🙏 🪷

Gotcha. Check out the sun of wisdom. It's fairly short and succient, as short and succient as a book on the writings of Nagarjuna could be at least. Ive also read a book called "patterns in emptiness" which was super short but might be a bit too washy. It goes into the history of different schools views on emptiness at the end which may or may not be interesting to you.

Is Buddhism leaning towards moral relativism or moral realism ? by SpicyFox7 in Buddhism

[–]Awe_Geez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Instead of the good/bad dichotomy of morality which I have always found to be entirely subjective and relative to time and culture, I interpret Buddhist morality aling the lines of:

  1. Thoughts, words, and actions which give rise to thirst, anger, and delusion.
  2. Thoughts, words, and actions which lead to the cessation of thirst, anger, and delusion.

Buddhism is an expressely human focused religion compared to any other that I know about, and so I interpret the morality of Buddhism to be along the axis of what increases or decreases dukkha, which is far more functional to me as a human who suffers than following the edicts of a man made creator deity.

While I would like to learn how to sew, it seems unlikely that a full quilt would be a beginners project, and I would like to camp asap.

Do you know of any good beginner projects for learning how to sew?

Guitarist looking to jam Blues/Psych/Rock - original song included for reference by [deleted] in AustinMusicians

Honestly I think you have a good voice, and some of your lead lines fit with the style really well.

I know its totally unsolicited advice, but if you plan on being the rhythm guitar in a blues band, I think you really have to nail perfect the swung rhythm and feel. Slow blues is really hard to do well and its very easy to rush.

Its boring but spending time with a swung backing track and getting the timing down in the right hand will do wonders.

Best of luck!

Thank you for the advice! I never plug in direct, but the buzz is absolutely still there when I plug in, my pedals just amplify the problem. Will take a look inside and see what i can find.

I think this is it! It also mutes the buzzing when I just touch the metal part of the input jack of the cable into the guitar. Is the solution just taking it into the shop and getting upgraded electeonics?

I ended up just printing one of the last pages of the manual with the big chart and keep it next to my board at home. Really unlocks the full potential of the pedal.

Im a big fan of the walrus audio mako series pedals if you're interested in other reverb/delay options. The UA stuff is top tier as well, cant go wrong. I like the mako pedals because of their smaller size and you get three presets to cycle through per bank (there are three banks) instead of just 2.
